On tap the day before DLD in 2008. From notes:
A. Semi-opaque dark nutty brown, tiny, spotty head. Pretty basic.
S. Sweet bridge-building Palin! This is explosively sweet, with hefty sugary malts right up front. A bit of fig, red grape and a not insignificant amount of booze finish off this malt bomb.
T. Glug glug glug... guh. This is ultra-sweet. Not just sweet in a good doppelbock way, but in an over-the-top, Three Floydian way. Even at the advertised and evident 9.5% abv, there's a ton of sugar left in this brew... eye opening and out of control. There's the singed grain flavor and raisins, cocoa, caramel and just a touch of coffee, but it is all in vain. In VAIN I TELL YOU! This is so sweet, it hurts. (and hurts the beer)
M. Rather thin, given the hideous sweetness. Smooth, somehow. Middling carbonation, finish is very much grain sugars and a little dark roast..
D. Low, sadly. Too sweet. Is there such thing as an Imperial Doppelbock? This is simply unbalanced and I could barely finish the small half-pour. This would be okay as a dessert beer or maybe as a reduction for, I don't know, ice cream? My hands are shaking just thinking about it...

On tap at the brewery 5-31-08. Served in a snifter.
A- Nearly opaque deep reddish brown. Poured with a scant 1/4" tannish head.
S- Caramel, toffee, cocoa, faint hints of roast.
T- Classic doppelbock with caramel, toffee, dates and grain, bread and bread crust malt components. No obvious hop character apart from restrained supporting bitterness. Alchohol presence is felt as a gentle warming after swallowing it.
M- Smooth as silk. Not at all cloying or syrupy. No sharpness from carbonation.
D- Perhaps this beer's best attribute. Extremely drinkable for such a large malty beer. You definitely feel like having another.
I wish 3F would bottle this. An outstanding example of the style.

Pours a light brown with ruby highlights. Smell is toffee, slight cocoa and some dark malts. This was my favorite from this trip. I really enjoyed this beer. Everything melded and went well together. Clean and pleasant on the mouthfeel. This was an enjoyable sipper. I wish they would bottle this stuff.

Sampled the day before dark lord day 2008.
A great looking dopplebock. Russett colored, very deep in hue. Barely transparent when held up to the light. A thick tan topper of a head.
Deep aromas of caramel malt and toffee. Very bready and cereal grains smels with the lightest ester of chocolate and brown sugar with a date on the finish.
An amazing lager. Bready as hell an fll of thick cereal malts. Big caramel and toffee backbone with a nutty middle. Wowthe middle this is amazing. A prickly carbonation with immense malt character. The least amount of hops I've tasted in a Floyds beer. Still a bit of piney hop flavor a bit resiny in nature. Dried fig and dates, brown sugar, milk chocolate, and cocoa. Awesome.

Three Floyds presented this beer at their beer/food pairing dinner at Vie on 4/8/08. This beer was poured by the waitstaff out of growlers into oversized wine glasses and served to us at tables.
The Decimator Double Bock was dark cloudy brown with amber highlights and a full body. The lacing was thin and wispy. It was incredibly smooth and flavorful, slightly smoky and spicy but very smooth and medium. I had never heard of this beer before, but if Three Floyds ever decides to release this beer as a seasonal, I'd buy it. It's perfect for these chilly spring days by a fireplace.
