Beer added by: mdm46410 on 11-23-2008

9.5-11.0% ABV, 100 IBUs - This complex double India pale ale has an intense citrus and floral hop aroma balanced by a velvety malt body which has been augmented with lactose milk sugar. With this different take on an IPA we have brewed an ale that is both pleasing to drink and, once again, “not normal.” Cheers! June release.

A: Copper slightly hazy body, lots of swirls of carbonation, but also some sediment on the bottom. Fluffy mountain of white head.

S & T: Smells of tropical fruit, milk sweetness, faint sting of alcohol. Taste is similar, heavy on the fruit (orange, mango, tangerine), virtually no pine, some lactose sweetness, and a disappointing kick of booze. To be expected, I suppose, for only moderately powerful flavors and double-digit ABV. Finish tastes just like the milk after a bowl of Froot Loops- just like it. No guessing it's 100 IBU- most of that bitterness is not only balanced, but somehow hidden.

M: Sticky body, lively carbonation but nothing harsh. Smooth, almost.

O: Awesome concept, well executed. I love the tropical notes of the hops over the pine, and the lactose sugar was well balanced and provided a unique character. Only bummer was the alcohol note- this is one beer I wish was lower ABV.

I don't get the world's response to Three Floyds beers. The ones everyone loves often leave me cold and the ones I like are often considered lesser. Take this beer for example. Yeah, it looks beautiful, decent lacing, and the smell conveys sweet citrus and some honey tones. The flavor delivers on that, some bitterness on the backend but mostly citrus and sweet malts. Unlike many Three Floyds IIPAs, though, there is no alcohol at all. Insanely smooth. And the creamy mouthfeel is bonkers, fully cappacino like.

Apocalypse Cow is a big fat, sweet beer, from the addition of lactose, but its got citrus and orange hops bones to back up that heft. As the beer warms the alcohol content becomes apparent but otherwise the 11% disappears.

Poors a nice golden amber color. Has a hoppy aroma and you can definitely pick up a sweetness from the milk sugars. This translates directly to the flavor as it has a nice mouth feel of hops that are well balanced with a subtle malty finish. Definitely get the milk sugars but leaves a pleasant after taste. Really enjoyed this

Very nice. Deep copper color, nice head. Citrus on the noise and tongue. A little sweet next, followed by the hop bitterness. Very smooth feel, maybe from the lactose?

Mid-golden color with a thick, perfect white head. Piney hop nose with a tiny bit of a sweet scent. Taste is powerful hops with a balance of strong malt. Smooth and surprisingly creamy. This a dynamite example of the style!

Personally, I'm not a fan of the extra sugary mouthfeel from the lactose. I like the unique effort, and it is still a tasty brew. Just not one gat will bring me back again

Pours a beautiful slightly hazy orange with a 2 finger frothy, creamy head that looks like it would belong on a stout. That lactose is already introducing itself. Smell is slightly sweet. Orange, tangerine, grapefruit... Very citrusy. Taste is also really citrusy with some added mango and guava. Kind of on the sweet malty side and I'm not sure how old the bottle is, but in any case it's tasting great. Not very bitter at all. Alcohol is barely noticeable. I'm not sure of the ABV but if it's 9.5-11 I really can't tell. Mouthfeel is just super super creamy. Medium to full bodied with a smooth carbonation. This one's a special treat. I don't think I've ever had an IPA with lactose in it and this one is pulled off really well. It adds this really great mouthfeel and slight sweetness. Very nice.

A hazy golden appearance. Nice strong tropical and citrus aroma. Similar flavor with strong fruit but also a big milky sweetness. High bitterness early and in the middle, which fades quickly but then comes back a little at the end. The aftertaste fades a lot by the end of the pint. Really smooth and good mouthful, alcohol is covered well.

Pours yellow (watch for the sediment). Has a floral smell. Taste is a bit odd. Almost like hops and malt are fighting it out. Mouthfeel is a bit waxy. Not a bad beer. Just odd.

Creamy, very sweet, yet boring dipa. It's interesting and unique nevertheless. I would call this beer disappointing. Doesn't deserve the high rating but everything 3 floyds make is highly rated. I had way better dipas than this one. I think the only reason people like this one is because it's easy to drink for such a high alcohol content beer. But for me this one lacks the complexity of hops that this beer should offer. It doesn't taste, feel or smell like dipa.

22oz bomber poured into a snifter. Not bottled on date listed, but has to be fairly new, as 3F bombers fly off the shelves where I bought it.

A- Pours a cloudy light orange with a nice amount of off-white head which sticks to the sides of the glass.

S- Lots of citrus hops on the aroma.

T- Starts with a nice citrus kick along with some resiny pine notes. Sweet malts are prevalent throughout the taste too.

M- Medium bodied, hoppy, easy drinking, dry finish.

Worth picking up if you can find it.

Very fruity and juicy. Creamy smooth mouthfeel, the lactose really adds a lot to this. A great twist on a IIPA. Could easily drink this all day, one of the smoother drinking IIPAs

22 oz. bottle, no bottled on date present. Finally getting around to trying this one from Three Floyds. No abv listed anywhere on the bottle.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Pours a typical cloudy golden orange IPA body with a finger of thick frothy off-white head. Leaves excellent sticky strands of lacing behind. 4

S - A typical DIPA aroma: citrusy, herbal, and orangey, with some sugary sweetness. The lactose definitely fuses with the malt well, and both are discernable. Mild notes of vanilla. 4

T - Taste is the same: citrusy, orangey, hoppy, bitter. Sweetened sugary finish from the lactose.

M - A smooth, creamy, easy-drinking beer. Medium-full bodied with nice carbonation. Lightly earthy, piney, & bitter finish mixed with some milk sugars.

Overall, an alright lactose DIPA offering from Three Floyds. Smooth, creamy & easy-drinking for the supposed 11.00% abv, with a nice hop presence. Recommended.

Big astringent, juicy hop flavors. Aroma of lighter bright juice fruits of peach, dank mango, slight pineapple, and a little pink grapefruit. Tons of pine and sticky resin. Substantial bready, biscuit malt. At the very end some sweet juicy strawberry.

Big, creamy and smooth on the palate. Bitterness kicks on the finish. There is more of a sharp grapefruit, more astringency and the pine sap kick. A very creamy, full IPA.

Well balanced, very well brewed. Great IPA from floyds. In the conversation with permanent funeral and dreadnaught.

I was skeptical, but the lactose sweetness really works with the hoppiness to produce a beautifully sweet, creamy, hoppy IPA. Dangerously drinkable for an 11%er.

I really like this beer, and was pleased to find a couple fresh bottles on the shelf. Not very bitter, almost creamy, maybe a result of the lactose milk sugar. Very drinkable in spite of the ABV. Another winner from 3 Floyds.

Bomber into a snifter. Appearance is clear, dark gold with a 2 finger head of sticky white foam. Strong pine and citrus on the nose with a touch of tropical fruit. Medium-light weight, and has a very crisp, smooth mouthfeel. Sweet tropical fruit up front with a strong citrus/pine presence middleways. The hops really come alive on the back end, and you're left with a resiny bitterness.

Overall, very good. Not my favorite 3F IIPA, but still an incredibly solid beer. It's very well balanced and drinks surpringly smooth for 11%.

Look - Mainly orange with yellow tint. Thick, small bubbled, slightly off white head. Good lacing. The body is hazy.

Smell - There is that strong dankness. Vanilla. Caramel. Pine. Pineapple.

Taste - The only difference in the taste is the bitterness and alcohol. A little orange and extra citrus thrown in there too.

Feel - Creamy. Milky. Small burst of carbonation but not too much.

Overall - 4.5s across the board. I need this side by side with Cimmerian to see which is my favorite Floyds DIPA (so far). I really like this beer's balance.

Poured cold into a tulip glass. Bottled on 7/2 and consumed on 7/26 2014.
Look = 4.0 Pours a cloudy golden orange color with 2 fingers of frothy white head. Good retention and solid dense lace.
Aroma = 4.0 Hop forward, mostly floral with mild citrus that became stronger as the beer warmed. Some booze comes through and stings the nose.
Taste = 5.0 Terrifically complex taste with this one. Start outs with hops, floral and citrus. Mid palette hits a sweet malt flavor followed by a mild bitterness. The sweetness returns at the end that leads to a unique sweet type aftertaste with less bitterness. I think the lactose comes in at the end.
Feel = 4.5 Full bodied and creamy for a DIPA. Medium to high carbonation gives it a crisp balance. Again, pretty unique.
Drinkability = 4.0 = The balanced taste and well hidden bitterness (despite the 100 IBUs) improves this DIPAs drinkability a lot.
Overall = 4.425 Another terrific DIPA from 3Floyd’s. Really complex brew and very tasty.

Poured from a bomber into a tulip. Nearly opaque hazy yellow-orange with tall off-white head that settles to one finger of foam. Bubbles rise throughout the drink. Aromas of pineapple, citrus rind, floral hops, and cotton candy. Flavors follow with orange and sugar forward then finishing with a dry, full-bodied, boozy, hop bitterness.

Pours a hazy golden/orange color with a deep white head. The initial taste here comes off as slightly off milk. As you get into it this heavily hopped DIPA opens up with further complexities. Lactose element gives this a creamy and smooth mouthfeel. Almost like a cask ale. A good beer - one worth seeking out once a year
