Style | ABV
American Double / Imperial IPA |  11.00% ABV

Availability: Summer

Notes/Commercial Description:
9.5-11.0% ABV, 100 IBUs - This complex double India pale ale has an intense citrus and floral hop aroma balanced by a velvety malt body which has been augmented with lactose milk sugar. With this different take on an IPA we have brewed an ale that is both pleasing to drink and, once again, “not normal.” Cheers! June release.

22oz bomber shared with Benish today 8/2/2013. Poured into a Russian River -tion glass.

This beer pours a standard caramel brownish-blonde body with a nice 2cm white head that dissipates a bit over time. The lacing is very sticky and prominent in this beer.. otherwise it looks like a nice DIPA, nothing special.

Sniffing this beer- smells very citrusy. Tangerine and orange straight up. There is a little bit of an underlying toffee and bready sweetness but it is otherwise straight up citrus. Not complex but very pungent and satisfying.

As I drink this, the sweetness really comes out. Its hoppy as hell which brings out the citrus and some floral notes in terms of the aromatic hoppiness, and a nice bitterness on the back end. In the middle there is a nice, pleasant sweetness which I attribute to the lactose. It makes for a very nice, rather unique combination of flavours that makes it sweet and bitter but not bittersweet.

The backend of this beer is a nice floral bitterness that is barely balanced out by the sweetness of the lactose. It is a well-carbonated beer with a nice medium body that is very drinkable. I really enjoyed this and it went down very quickly. No heat at all.

Very interesting and a rather unique beer, which is what I have come to expect from Three Floyds. Worth trying at least once, I highly recommend it to anyone who likes IPAs even a little bit. Its a nice adaptation from the good milk stouts.

Light orange, bright yellow color. Very little head on the poor. Very strong malty smell to the beer. Small citrus flavor to the smell. Quite malty flavor just like the smell made you believe. Bitter flavor from the hops finishes the beer. Glad I was able to try this malty hop beer.

1 PINT 6 FL OZ bottle
Served in a tulip glass

A - This beer is amber in color with three inches of off-white head.

S - I get some citrus. I also get some anise. I did not notice it until I tasted the beer.

T - The one thing that stands out to me is the taste of anise on the finish. It has the typical IPA flavors up front, citrus, pine, etc. That anise taste is really different for an IPA.

M - Moderate

O - I am not a fan of anise. This taste caught me way off guard. I am a fan of Three Floyd's IPA's, but this may be the exception.

Thanks itsthepleats for sending this bottle in the trade

Appearance-
Clear medium amber. Head is bright-white, and fluffy.

Smell-
Huge hit of pine resin and citrus. Grapefruit, tangerine, and oily zest. Lactose sweetness runs right behind it. Malts are big and loaded with sweet bready, caramel, and mildly roasted aromas. Slight grassiness and earthiness as well.

Taste-
Aggressively hoppy. Pine builds as an oily, resinous, strongly bitter component. Grapefruit rind in the mix. Huge malt sweetness augmented with the super sweetness of the lactose sugars. Bready and nicely roasted. Caramel malts add another layer of sweetness. Orange and touches of tangerine as it warms.

Mouthfeel-
Moderate body that leans toward full. Moderate carbonation. A touch dry. A touch creamy.

Overall-
Less aggressive than other Three Floyd's DIPAs. Huge flavor, but nicely balanced for what it is. Lactose adds some backing sweetness, but ultimately the hops dominate the lactose sugar.
