9.5-11.0% ABV, 100 IBUs - This complex double India pale ale has an intense citrus and floral hop aroma balanced by a velvety malt body which has been augmented with lactose milk sugar. With this different take on an IPA we have brewed an ale that is both pleasing to drink and, once again, “not normal.” Cheers! June release.

Poured from a 22oz bomber into a pint glass.
Unreal art on the bomber!!!

Looks incredible with an apricot-copper glow with a white head with good lacing.

Aroma is spicey, massive hops, light fruity, boozy, light fruit, grass, and pines.

Sweet and bready for a huge DIPA. Piney with a hint of orange. It's malty with a nice bite of hops but not a huge hop bomb. Maybe due to the Lactose.... not detecting anything odd that makes it a lactose sugar beer.??

Mouthfeel is good with a syrupy feel and low carbs. Really nice and not really bitter at all on the after taste.

I finally pulled the trigger on this one on #IPADAY. Glad I was able to try this one! Not as good as Dreadnaught though, but a solid DIPA.

Pours a hazy apricot with a finger of foamy cream colored head.

The aroma is full of tropical hop aromas, getting a nice touch of peach and a touch of booziness. Smells great!

The taste follows the nose. Great tropical fruit hop bomb, nice mix of peach and a little caramel malt to give it a little balance.

Full bodied with an appropriate amount of carbonation. Could stand to have a little more but a fantastic mouthfeel as is. Slight alcohol burn, hides the 11% pretty well.

Overall, this is a very tasty DIPA. Loved the tropical and peach notes! Hides the abv well and it was delicious.

Bottle pour at the bottle share hosted by Adam Fine Wine & Liquor held at Sophie’s Place in Redondo Beach, CA.

Pours a slightly hazy light orange with a foamy bone colored head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of citrus fruit, citrus zest, and alcohol aromas. Taste is much the same with a sweet flavor and malty finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

Three Floyds Apocalypse Cow

Appearance: Three Floyds July specialty selection pours a golden yellow with a slight orange tint. A rocky, soapsuds white head perches itself majestically atop the brassy liquid, but its reign is short lived as it settles down from an imposing three fingers to a more modest (yet tightly bubbled) one. Carbonation is evident, but not overly active, and there are no alcohol legs to speak of. It’s a pretty beer, but nothing really special.

Aroma: The beer smells mainly piney and sweet. There are definite notes of citrus and pine resin, but the milk sugar (the ingredient that sets this one apart as “not normal”) is also present towards the back of the aroma, slightly hidden, but lurking. There are hints of pear and tangerine as far as specifics go, but pine is really the dominant smell. A very slight creaminess is also noticeable, though just barely.

Taste: Complexity is an understatement here. This beer is simply astonishingly deep. The hops hit quickly up front, but are quickly washed away by a formidable creaminess and sweetness (from the lactose and the malts) that would be approaching levels of overpowering and unpleasant sweetness if not for the resurgence of the bitter, piney hops. These flavors fight fervently for the battlefield that is the taster’s tongue, though they eventually settle on terms of a tie and go down together, which is really a win-win for those of us enjoying this delicious drink. I wish I could give this more than five points for this category.

Mouthfeel: …is another homerun for the superior “cow” related beer (sorry, New Glarus; this Wisconsin native still loves you). It is smooth but not watery, bubbly but easy to drink down, creamy but not a mouth-coater. This beer, like the taste (and like all great beers) is balanced perfectly, with a bit of dryness that is not unpleasant.

Overall: Whatever reservations and lack of “It” factor Apocalypse Cow may have had in the first two categories of review it made up for where it really counts. This is a beer that proves sometimes we critics can judge a beer by its cover, or a book by its aroma, or however that goes, and that judgment can be wrong when it comes to the real substance of the book or beer or what-have-you. Those abnormal Floyds from Munster have done it again with this gem of an ale. I’ve been anticipating acquiring this beer for some time, and as it jumped straight into my Top Five beers, it is safe to say it was worth the wait and worthy of the hype. Though the final score will not reflect the awesomeness that is drinking Apocalypse Cow, regulations and rubrics must be followed. 18/20

Poured from a 22oz bottle into an imperial pint.

This beer pours out a hazy orange color with three fingers of head. The aroma is full of citrus, floral, and piney hops, with some lactose sugar in there to make things a bit different. The taste is, again, fairly unique for a DIPA. It comes in strong with the citrus and tropical hops at first, but this is augmented immediately by the lactose. The sweetness from the lactose seems to bring out the tropical flavors from the hops to ride out the finish. The mouthfeel is full and slightly drying, and the drinkability is very good. This is probably my least favourite of all the hoppy beers I've had from Three Floyds so far. And it's still really good! I do appreciate that it brings something new and unique to the table, but I wouldn't mind more aggression.

Appearance: Clear medium amber. Head is bright-white, fluffy, and rocky. Drops to a tiny cap and decent clar after a couple minutes. Aggressively sticky lacing.

Smell: Huge hit of pine resin and citrus. Grapefruit, tangerine, pith and oily zest. Lactose sweetness runs right behind it. Mts are big and loaded with sweet bready, caramel, and mildly roasted aromas. Slight grassiness and earthiness as well. Almost pushes toward toffee. Oily hops.

Taste: Aggressively hoppy. Pine builds as an oily, resinous, strongly bitter component. Grapefruit rind in the mix. Huge malt sweetness augmented with the super sweetness of the lactose sugars. Bready and nicely roasted. Caramel malts add another layer of sweetness. Orange and touches of tangerine as it warms.

Mouthfeel: Moderate body that leans toward full. Moderate carbonation. A touch dry. A touch creamy.

Overall: Less aggressive than other Three Floyd's DIPAs. Huge flavor, but nicely balanced for what it is. Lactose adds some backing sweetness, but ultimately the hops crush it.

Nothing really stands out, it's typical fare as far as appearance is concerned. It's a clear, light shade of orange, like the color of a nectarine or peach. The head is white, very fluffy and distinctly IPA. Good retention, leaving a nice lace when it eventually does die.

Borderline perfect smell as it's full of citrus and pine. Slightly different citrus flavors, as pineapple and grapefruit shine.

Taste is right up there with smell...borderline perfect. Very piney. A lot of citrus. Alcohol and a slightly medicinal flavor.

Sweet up front with a hoppy bite at back. Medium bodied. Some heat from the alcohol. Lots of citrus. Almost a burnt candy feel.

This was a stellear DIPA. Extremely drinkable despite the high ABV and IBU. Good balance. Simply put, an outstanding beer for the type, or any type for that matter.

Thanks to Robbiemoy13 for this bottle.

A - Medium orange with a yellow glow and half a finger of white head.

S - Big sweetness up front with plenty of caramel notes. The hops add pine and citrus

T - A huge bitterness up front. Pine, citrus, lighter floral flavours come through from the hops. The sweetness shows up in the middle and adds some caramel. The finish is dry and bitter.

M - Medium body, moderate carbonation. Some good hop oils are present throughout.

Interesting concept from 3Floyds. On tap at 4th Street Cafe in Columbus.

The body is a bit darker than usual with a smaller than average head. The smell is loaded with a balance of fruit and pine with a good amount of resinous flavors as well. The taste has the same quality as Blackheart, but different. Blackheart has oak, but this has Lactose. The lactose works wonders balancing out what would normally be a overly bitter resinous beer, and magically you get a very creamy balanced slightly fruity and resinous IPA that drinks WAY below the 11%.
