2011 bottle (white wax)
A: Pours a murky rusty red with a good sized tan head. Fades slowly leaving a thick and uniform patchwork of lacing behind.
S: Strong aroma, I can smell it from across the room. Loaded with fig and raisins. Toffee and caramel sweetens it up even more. Perhaps get even a little bit of grape skin.
T: Toffee up front with some nice sweet caramel and more dark fruits. Turns surprisingly bitter in the middle with some earthy and piney hops. Maybe even grapefruit. A little toast in there too. Swear I get some oak in there even though I'm not sure if it's aged on oak. Touch of cocoa here and there. Finishes somewhat dry and fairly bitter.
M: Fairly heavy, thick, astringent almost.
O: This is a great american style barleywine. Very hoppy, perhaps one of the hoppiest I've had. It's not overly sweet or overly bitter, great balance of flavors with tons of complexity. I'm not sure I could identify all the flavors, myself. Must-have if you're a fan of the style.
