A huge, sweet barleywine with complex caramel malt notes, balanced by generous hopping and a high alcohol content. This fruity and malty beer is best enjoyed while keeping warm in the brutal winter months.

22oz silver waxed bottle purchased recently at my LBS dated 12-22-17 (5 years old at time of sampling). Not sure of how it was stored as it hasn't sat on the shelf all these years. No ABV listed. Poured into a tulip pint glass at fridge temp. The pour is opaque medium brownish amber with dark khaki colored head. The head recedes to a thin ring and island leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is moderate in strength featuring sweet oxidized caramel malt and resinous fading hops. The taste is semisweet caramel malt with subtle hints of pipe tobacco, old leather, burnt toast, and fading piney hop resin. Moderate bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium plus bodied with just less that average carbonation and a semi dry finish. Sticky with lingering unfermented malt sweetness and hop resin, but not cloying. Overall, excellent today, but definitely a different beast after 5 years in the bottle.

Oct. 2010: Bottle, vintage 2009, kindly shared by gunnar. Amber to orange colour, low head. Nice aroma of sultanas and dark dried fruits. The flavour has also notes of raisins, sweet malts, alcohol and decent hops.

22 oz bottle, born on 1/6/20, poured into a snifter at 50 degrees F:
L - amber/orange with a tan head that lingered around the edges
S - caramel, biscuit
T - caramel, floral hoppy notes, biscuit
F - medium mouthfeel and carbonation
O - very hoppy for a barleywine, in the spirit of Bigfoot

Bottle from the Party Town bomber shelf, 2016 release according to the wax, no indication on the label.
Pours a murky brown color with a thin khaki head, decent retention and some beautiful on the snifter glass.
Aroma has a sweet dominance of caramel and honey and the obvious booze.
The taste is not as sweet as the nose suggest, finishes with a bitter note.
Mouthfeel is full and silk like.

Yet another brew I'd probably not drunk had it not been among BA's 250 Beers of Fame. But, I'm glad I pursued it.

In a style that offers neither foam nor pale, Behemoth still Looks average. In this highly aromatic style, Behemoth Smells good to great and, well-integrated. Tastes that way, too. A full, sweet malt balanced by enough hops. Too many American BW pile in the hops; hoping that we won't notice that their malt blending cut-corners. Not so with Behemoth. In my mouth, full and viscous... but knowing age will do this ale good.

OA: I'm one of the few Midwesterners I know still sitting on the fence about 3 Floyds. They clearly are a brewing genius. I've taken their tour and ate at their shop and the beers paired pretty well with what clearly is not a gastro-pub. But, I've only had 12 of their ales and very few repeats. Maybe if I can store this Behemoth for a few years, both of us will be mature enough to appreciate one another more. Cheers !

6/28/21 Repeated Behemoth. Edited the above review and stick with the rating. This a futures noted on UnTappd.

Bottle courtesy of JohnnyHops.
Black wax top, 2020.
L: deep amber. Moderate tan head.
S: raisins, brown sugar, dates, grass.
T: same. +vanilla notes, plum, fig, as it warms molasses and rock candy, chocolate tootsie roll. Some grassy herbal hop presence. Seems fairly fresh.
F: fairly thick but balanced. Perfect for style.
Overall: I like this. Normally I’m not wild about a hoppy bw, but in this case it seems like it increases drinkability. (on a strange side note this reminds me a lot of a Lagunitas hoppy amber I had 11+ years ago. “Lucky#13” or “brown shugga” maybe?)

1/6/20 650 ml bottle bought in the spring that I was thinking of aging but then saw in the cellaring thread that it wasn't advisable so thought let's get it on.

Poured into a DFH tulip a nice light tan head was over an orangish amber cloudy body. Prodigious lacing as the head died down. Smell is mostly of brown sugar and dark fruit. In the taste, although this is a hopped up American barleywine, the hops aren't overly bitter and instead add to the sweetness of the taste, particularly when it warms to room temperature. I don't think this will age nearly as nicely as Bigfoot or Bell's Third Coast so I'm not regretting my decision. Mouthfeel is fine for the style.

Although this was a positive experience, unless I can find future bottles marked down from what I paid for this, this will be a one off.

Tasted in a Rastal Teku glass from a 1 pint 6 fl oz bottle on October 28, 2020. This one has green sparkle wax. I think the bottled on date is 12-28-15 but it's hard to read.

2011 vintage (white wax capped) poured into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Ruby amber pour... semi-opaque with cloudy sediment at the finish. A solid finger of off-white head leaves decent lacing.

S: Brown sugar, hops, fruit, and spice.

T.F: Semi-sweet to start. Caramel malts... brown sugar and molasses mixed with plum and fig. Hop bitterness comes later, although is muted after 9 years in the bottle. Some spice and pine. Medium bodied.... smooth with relatively low carbonation. More dark fruit and brown sugar to finish.

O: An outstanding Barleywine which has held up ridiculously well over 9 years in the cellar. One to seek out.
