i've been meaning to wring up a review for this one for a while. I feel that a second review for the tap version will be required as well.
Red Wax just released (imo fresher the better here).
Oddly the color when held to my laptop is bringing out some orange colors but when held to the lights it seems far more of a ruby read. The clarity seems odd given the high abv (10.5 is at least simi high) and the style, but I won't mark off for too much here. The second pour, made AGRESSIVELY gives off a HUGE head, 3 fingers and lacing is well represented.
Fruity mango and huge caramel malt back.
Oh so nice. hops bring in a huge amount of tropical fruits while the malt give it a deep and rich sweetness. The final verdict is malt favored by a hair, nearly perfect for the imperial IPA loving American hop head...I'd just go elsewhere if you want a balanced english style barely wine. Caramel, mango, orange, peach, with bittering hops to bring it all into shape.
Alcohol certainly kicks in here, not letting the hops and the malt speak alone. The alcohol is a touch hot given the 10.5 vs say 12 which it tastes and feels like. Still velvety smooth and really tasty. The density here is on the lower side of the style as well. This beer is a sweet IPA vs the wine like effects expected from a huge barely wine. Carbonation is actually rather strong here as well which perhaps keeps this one on the lighter side of the style.
OK, if we were to score this strictly as an Americna barely wine...it isn't really in style. it also misses the IPA style though I suppose you could see this as what a blend of 90 and 120 dream of being if they used quality malt and hops.
At around 17-18 after tax this is a stiff hard to swallow price on a beer. That said this is really really good beer, maybe even pushing great. Drop the price to 14-15 and this is a winner. That said this once again showcases the amazing hops and malt flavors that all three floyds beers beers have. I'm not sure what they are doing, but from pride and joy all the way up to Behmonth the amazing hop and malt flavors stay unquestionably theirs. I feel the price requires a full pint off the overall score.

Blue wax to tulip.
A. Dark copper with amber hues. Cloudy. 2 finger egg shell head that retreats to a fine bubble rim. Nice laces.
S. Moderately fragrant. Big time floral hops w/ a citrus finish. This beast is certainly going to be a hoppy barley wine (big surprise).
T. A little sweet, a lot bitter. Strong hops flavor with a certain presence of barley wine = apples, plums, figs, malts, pears, and persimmons.
M. Very thick. High carbonation. Fairly smooth.
O. Very nice. This is certainly a 3F ale in respect tot the level of hops. Which are very high. This is a great ale to share. Very strong and very well crafted. I certainly recommend this ale.
