surprised to see no review of this one on the books as i've enjoyed it a bunch of times. none-the-less...green wax 2010 bottle, thank you to CruisaC for sending this in a hats off to barleywine BIF many moons ago. enjoyed from the FFF teku glass.
a - brew poured an opaque transparent only to shadows when held to the light mahogany brown. the hard pour yielded a few fingers of head that left chunky lacing all over the top of the glass as it foamed away. quite attractive. the core of the beer was darker than the sides.
s - smell is pretty spot on as well. deep rich caramel and toffee. great malt backbone. whatever hops this beer once had have certainly faded toward the backbone, but i don't mind...smells great.
t - whatever hoppiness seems to have faded in the nose showed themselves in some bittering on the first sip. the star of the show is the toffee malts.
m - a bit heavy on the bitterness and has some syrup in the finish. the heat is pretty well hidden, but feels like a barleywine. medium bodied if not on the lighter side for a barley.
o - this is a nice barleywine, kind of like a bigfoot lite to me. as a fan of barleywines, i've always dug it. the 2 years on this one doesn't seem to have harmed it, but i remember enjoying it more fresh. none-the-less a worthy barleywine from a worthy brewery.

2014 – Blue wax
A: Poured into a snifter the head built a modest half finger tall. Off white, khaki looking, fell after about 30 seconds. Swirling the beer produces slow falling alcohol legs. The beer is a very haze, dark woody mahogany color with a reddish tint. The lacing left on the side of the glass is just a few small streaks.
S: Fresh smelling hop aroma with citrus and musty pine. A noticeable sweetness coming through from fruity yeast esters and malt character. Caramel and stone fruit with some ethanol.
T: Strong grapefruit and citrus hop bitterness gives way to a sweet malt profile. Toffee, syrup, candy sugar and caramel notes. The hop flavor evolves on the pallet to a more dank pine flavor with some tropical fruit (citra?). The balance is down the middle surprisingly, if this wasn't so fresh I think the malt would win the balance game, but I'm liking the balance of the fresh Behemoth.
M: Big thick body with much residual sweetness. Alcohol warming is there but not overpowering. Carbonation is lower with some stickyness left on the tongue.
O: Don't know why you would age this beer, fresh is the way to go. Fresh hop aroma, great bitterness, it's bassicly a DIPA with a bigger malt body.
