2012 Bottling. Poured from a bottle into a Lost Abbey Teku. Pours a fairly clear, beautiful burnt amber with a nice rocky white head that hangs around a short while and leaves some nice lacing on the glass. The nose is typical of the style. I get sweet toffee-like notes, a bit of cherry, a surprising bit of hoppy aroma (considering this beer is several months old), and a nice faint scent of alcohol.
The beer has a full body and a super slick, velvety feel. Nice, sweet malt flavors greet you first. There is a nearly perfect accompaniment of hops that enter at mid-palate and the flavors develop into over-ripe citrus and dark dried fruit notes. The finish is oaky, perfectly dry, and well-sustained. This beer has about 7 months of age on it, but it still has a little bit of hop bite.
I know that this beer is incredibly hoppy when it's fresh and almost drinks like a IIPA or IIIPA. After several months, the hops have receded a little and the beer is now drinking like a GREAT barleywine. It is a must-try for fans of American Barleywines. I hope to buy it every year.

I'm just not getting this as a Barley wine. I smell the signature Three Floyds hops, but it isn't as sweet as a BW usually is. The nose is nice for a big, hoppy non-BW. Confusing.
The taste is, once again, bit fat hoppiness typical of the brewery- sharp and tangy. I'm STILL not getting this as a BW. A bit too thin, though the mouthfell is fine, for anything other than a BW. I get the malts, but can't pin down any caramel notes on this.
If you're looking for a sweet, thick BW- go elsewhere. If you're looking to sample thru the Three Floyds taste catalogue this one is a tick worth trying. Once.
I'd say this would be a good candidate to age or have as a barrel aged brew. As it is, it is a hop bomber that hits just a bit strong for the style.
