P - 2012 release(red wax in ohio) into a snifter. 3/4 finger white creamy head with a dark orange/light brown color.

S - Wow, not what I expected. This smells like a nice DIPA. Citrusy, leather, earthly, awesome!

T - I've been trying to like barleywines, and this takes the cake. I'm a fan! Delicious, incredibly smooth for the ABV. Smooth up front, going into a nice hoppy mouthful with a nice alcohol presence. Cooked oranges/grapefruit. Not the "burn", but a nice known taste is present. Love it. Very impressed

M - Creamy, smooth, incredibly smooth. Moderate carbonation, just right. Nice dry aftertaste left in my mouth after every sip.

O - Really impressed. I will be looking for this beer in the future. This is the barleywine that makes me like barleywines!(though it is quite expensive!)

Blue wax, 2009 bottling.

Pours a clear, cherry/amber with a 1", white head that falls to a cover with some sparse lacing.

The smell is a little alcohol, quite malty and a bit fruity.

The taste is deliciously sweet and malty with a little fruit. No real hint of alcohol though it's very warming in the end.

Mouthfeel is full tending to medium, very smooth and lightly carbonated. I was expecting some bitterness but got none, this goes down easy.

Overall: This beer goes down really well with a great, mellowed out taste. I haven't had it fresh with a hop presence but this is extremely nice as it is. A very good winter brew and my favorite barleywine to date.

2011 vintage with red wax. Thanks, Sean.

Clear pale amber topped by a thin white crust. Looks more like a DIPA than a barleywine.

Smells more like a DIPA, too. Pretty nice citrus hop nose, grapefruit dominant with a woody/earthy note beneath and some tropical fruit sweetness. The malt profile is pretty dry and subdued at this point.

Palate is citrus heavy and pretty bitter, with a fairly dry and light malt backbone for a 12.5% beer. Some nice tropical fruit undertones, light sugary pale malt. Ends like a DIPA with a big bitter hop bite. I've had this before aged and didn't care for it, but fresh it's rather delicious.

FINALLY tried this one. After having traded away multiple bottles, and after sitting on two for several months, I decided to give it a go.

2011 Vintage
Poured from 22oz bottle into Bordeaux wine glass.

A: Light, pineapple hops work well with the carmelized pineapple from the malt. A light hint of booze as well.

A: 1/2 finger of off-white foam forms with each pour. Clear, bronze body. Awesome color!

F: Herbal hops up front quickly yield to delicious malty goodness. Sweet, carmelized sugar, sweet tea, a touch of peach, and a mild bitterness. A quick description: clean, sweet, a mix of caramel and fruit, and enough bitterness to balance.

M: Medium-full, slick, syrupy mouthfeel. Medium-low carbonation.

O: I love barleywines, but American barleywines are sometimes a bit hoppier than I'd like. I'd held onto this one for several months, hoping it might tone the hop bitterness down a bit. Well, whether the time in the bottle helped make this one that much better, or it was really a stellar one to begin with, the beer I tasted was one hell of a barleywine! Get this one if you can!
