A friend picked up a few bottles from the legendary 3 Floyds for me on a recent trip through Indiana. I am glad he did.
Appearance 3.75: Poured out a nice light golden color. Somewhat opaque with lots of particulate matter. Nice 1/2" head and good lacing.
Smell 4.0: Very nice nose on this beer. Deep hops and the requisite pine, grapefruit and general acidic bouquet.
Taste 4.0: Front is somewhat sweet, but a huge hit of malt in the middle of the palate balances things out. Middle is where a massive kick of hops comes in with lots of alkaline goodness and a unique taste...almost like green tea. Unusual but it works! Finish is a wonderfully balanced marriage of barley and hops. Aftertaste is piney with citrus rinds.
Mouthfeel 4.0: I really like the mouthfeel of this beer: smooth and carbonation was perfect.
Overall 4.0: Excellent IPA. What really sets it apart for me is the strange -yet delicious-- taste of green tea in the middle of the palate. This is a big beer and there is no hint of the big ABV. Recommended.
