Poured from a bomber into a tulip glass.

appearance light copper, somewhat hazy with medium head retention

Smell Earthy stone fruit with hints of guava. Kind of an Midwest/east coast styled aroma.

Taste Stone fruit with a sturdy malt backbone and earthy guava notes.

Mouthfeel medium and appropriate for a dipa. Carbonation was spot on and had the staying power to last for the whole bomber.

Overall This beer was a great dipa. I enjoyed the earthy stone fruit notes and the balance was superb.

From: Three Floyds Brewery
Date: None on bottle, purchased from brewery on 2013-11-01
Glass: Tulip

Three Floyds' Arctic Panzer Wolf is a fairly aggressive Double IPA, but also fairly straightforward with its near-single emphasis on hop-derived fruit flavors, hop bitterness, and ethanol. In general, pleasant, but a bit too showy of its ethanol for my tastes. Otherwise, the bitter orange-grapefruit-tropical flavors that are abundant in this beer are very enjoyable.

Pours a 2cm tall head of off-white foam, made up of small and medium-sized bubbles, creating a somewhat dense, frothy mass. Retention is above average, lasting about two minutes as the foam declines to to a thick ring around the glass with scattered small islands of thin foam residing atop the body of the beer. Lacing is present, a single medium-sized line clings to the entire perimeter of the glass. Body is a dark orange color that borders light brown, with light bringing out bright golden orange-yellow hues. Carbonation is readily visible through the slightly hazy body (20-30% opacity), moderate in number and high in activity.

Aroma is of very fresh hops and hop pellets, contributing dense orange, nectarine, and pine scents, along with a leafy, bitter-ish green component, and hints of dill. Generally sweet, fruit and pine-like, appealing.

Major flavors of very bitter (it doesn't get any more bitter than 100IBU, friends) hops with orange, grapefruit, hints of tropical fruit, some greenery, and ethanol. Front of palate finds bitter orange, pine resin, grapefruit peel, and traces of soil. Mid-palate experiences strong hop bitterness, bitter orange and grapefruit peel, pine resin, bitter green herbs, slightest hints of sweet pale malt usage tied to slightly sweet ethanol. Back of palate finds strong hop bitterness, bitter orange and grapefruit peel, pine resin, slight hints of tropical fruit (mango, guava), little traces of malt and a larger ethanol content. Aftertaste is of strong hop bitterness, ethanol, and lingering citrus (very bitter grapefruit and orange rind).

Beer is medium bodied, with carbonation of medium to medium high levels, giving the beer a slightly fizzy (1/5) and then very foamy (4/5) mouthfeel. Ethanol is easily felt and accentuated from the carbonation, appearing on the tongue, back of throat, and in the nostrils. A bit less carbonation would actually suit this beer better, making it more of a moderate sipper than a fizzy ale. Closes dry, with heavy lingering stickiness on the palate and lips.

22oz bottle shared by Doug. Poured into a Great Lakes snifter today, 10/31/2013. Have had this multiple times out of the tap and bottle (last had was 6/1/2013), but only getting around to reviewing this today.

Pours a hazy straw-golden body with a nice white head that has solid retention. Filmy foam that sticks around a bit. Good lacing left all over the place as the beer goes down.

Smells fantastic. So damn hoppy, not much malt backbone. Lots of citrus- so much grapefruit- with complementary notes of pine and earth. Strong and very hoppy, typical of a Three Floyds beer.

Very grapefruity on the tongue, some orange zest in there along with some pine resin. No real sign of a malt backbone. Very strong hoppiness.

Medium body, great carbonation, creamy. Typical Three Floyds. Dry finish but not too dry- so drinkable for a DIPA. Finish is quite bitter yet this beer is so drinkable. Don't know else to say about it.

Definitely better than Dreadnaught. It brings the hops to your mouth. Definitely not balanced, but that's Three Floyds for you. A fantastic DIPA, no doubt.
