Served in a snifter, pour is black with a creamy thick tan head that fades to a ring at the edge of the glass.

Smell is sweet chocolate, roasted malts, some bourbon and vanilla oak, and a hint of dried peppers.

Taste is creamy lactose, oats, smokey spice, some wood, a touch of vanilla and a bitter spicy dried pepper finish. The pepper really heats up in the aftertaste after a few sips. Very unique.

In the mouthfeel, the chilis have a lingering spiciness that sits in the back of your throat and gets slightly scratchy as you get through this beer. It has about the same body as the standard moloko, maybe a little thinner, and slightly coating but not sticky.

Drinkability is average. This one was good for an 8oz snifter, but that's it - even that was tough to finish. I would have liked to have seen FFF experiment with other peppers that play a little better with the lactose - aji panca or slightly sweeter, fruity pepper might have taken away some of the heat without sacrificing the chili flavors.

Made sense to crack this on Devil's Night 2013. Bottle 155/405. 2012 bottle.

Appearance: Black as night. Creamy, caramel colored head that faded too quickly.

Smell: bourbon, chili spice. This is gonna be good.

Taste: Time has been good for this beer and I am glad I waited long enough where the chili heat has faded enough to be toned downed to the point where it's clearly present but not overwhelming. The milky creaminess is well integrated with the heat.

Mouthfeel: Couldn't ask for much more. Fantastic.

Overall: If you have one, now is a pretty good time to crack it. Grateful to have the opportunity to drink this. Patience was key.

Served in a snifter. Pulled from a golden crowned FFF tap handle.

Black with a light tan ring of foam, initially fluffy but it subsides quickly. No lace to speak of, but the ring sustains itself around the edge.

The ancho chiles lend a smoky sweetness, and there's a fruity quality that I associate with the pepper as well. Peppery with a very mild heat, nothing approaching hot or spicy in the least. Chiles and chocolate is an ancient combo, and it works well here. Dry bittersweet bakers chocolate, cocoa, tobacco, vanilla from the barrel, and probably a bit of residual sweetness from the barrel also. The chilies give it an earthy unique complexity, a mildly spicy counterpoint to the sweet richness of the barrelled milk stout. Higher alcohol makes this a slow sipper, but it's easy to finish the draft.

This milk stout was served in a small tulip, and I couldn't wait to try it. It was described to me as the Three Floyds Moloko infused with chiles. A beer with chocolate notes infused with chilie peppers? That is the best combination. If you have had chile with your hot chocolate, then you know what I mean.

A - Dark as night with 1/8 inch tan head. Reduced to a thin lacing. Produced legs upon agitation.

S - Notes of chocolate, coffee, toffee or caramel, vanilla, plum, but no pepper.

T - The sweetness of a milk, vanilla bean, chocolate and roasted coffee at the start and adding slightly fruity and slightly bitter from the chilies in the middle. Ends with a not unpleasant heat from the chilies in the back of the throat, which blends nicely with the sweet flavors still on the tongue.

M - Velvety and full-bodied, fresh and smooth.

D - A suberb stout to finish off a hearty meal such as steak or beef ribs.

Conquistador de Muerte - 2012 - No. 16/405

Picked this up at the brewery over the summer and after having a small pour from a buddy's bottle soon after release, I could simply wait no longer to drink this. I was going to save it for a special occasion but I figured it's Wednesday evening, I'm alive... special enough.

Poured an immensely dark brown color that if you didn't see the ring around the glass you'd think it was jet black. Initially it produced a small, finger sized UPS brown (the uniforms, not the trucks) foamy layer that fizzled and popped and quickly vanished leaving the brew naked. The smells. Oh my, the smells. There is a totally robust, complex aroma coming from this one. Bourbon, caramel, roast, dark funk, and above all.. an amazing tartness. From my vague memories of Bourbon County Cherry Rye.. it's like that. But more prominent! The tastes. Wow. The effects of the bourbon on this blow my mind. I believe BCBS is too harsh fresh. Others I've had are either overwhelmingly hot and boozy or contrastingly underwhelming. The bourbon is more than subtle and perfectly complimentary to the roasted caramel tastes. So drinkable, so enjoyable. I question the 8% ABV noted on the detail page, it should easily be in the double digits. It ends with a sweet tartness which reaffirms the aromas. Hints of cherry or perhaps some other indistinguishable berry. The peppers aren't noticeable in the taste but make themselves evident once the liquid is gone with gentle heat upon the lips. With the previous sample I thought the peppers were a bit more apparent and the heat was cranked up a bit. Perhaps a few months muted the peppers. An amazing beer. This is definitely one of my favorites to date. Perhaps even best. Having been on a Bourbon County Coffee kick recently, I can see the quality and complexity in this one. Significantly better. This one is phenomenal.
