8th Taster at Port's Barrel Blast

A - Murky purple and dirty brown with no to little head with little white remnants of the head floating around - from the tap

S - Sweet, vanilla, bourbon, and berries

T - Berries, vanilla, bourbon, oak-toffee, sweet earthy finish, with chocolate lingering up in the aftertaste

M - Light -medium feel, low carbonation, light heat lingering in the finish with the chocolate aftertaste

D - Very nice combination - a bit sweet with the fruit up front with vanilla and chocolate blending in with the bourbon details imparted by the barrel -- the berries makes this beer and works well. A little sweet and fruity but an interesting mix - didn't get heavy scotch notes but they were there muted by the bourbon... The appearance is deceiving but as another reviewer stated maybe this almost tapped out? Definitely a recommended try if not just for the quirkiness of marionberries...

On tap at barrel blast

A: poured a chocolate brown in color with brown highlights and had a nice frothy head leaving good lacing sticking to the glass.

S: you can definitely detect the marion berries with chocolate and oat grain notes but did had hints of hops too. This brew actually had subtle bourbon character for a barrel aged brew.

T: the bourbon flavor was more apparent on the palate but worked well with the marion berries and had chocolate oat grain accents.

M: the brew was medium in body with a low amount of carbonation which had a sweet, slight fruity, bourbon, silky finish.

D: this one was the nost drinkable out of the three floyd offerings at the fest and was tasty faux show.

On tap at the 2011 Pizza Port Barrel Blast.

A: Getting to the bottom of the keg it seems. Ruddy and hazy brown with a small head.

S: A nice blend of chocolate and Marion berry. Subtle toffee and oak with prominent bourbon.

T: Dark chocolate and Marion berries with a subtle lactic flavor and a nice bourbon profile.

M: Full body, moderate carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel.

Overall: An interesting beer.

Pours a murky gross brown with a huge mocha head with pink hues in the foam. Once the foam settles down, the smell is dominated by chocolate - very interesting since there is no chocolate used in this brew. Bourbon, a hint of fruity sourness, some smokey malt, some toffee. Taste is similar but the marion berries stand out much more. Slightly tart, vanilla, bourbon, a hint of oak, peated malt, and again, milk chocolate. Medium bodied with a light carbonation and a sticky tart finish. A very interesting beer, lots of flavors and nuances brought out by the berries and barrels. I am not a huge fan of Robert the Bruce and this was a definite improvement for me.

on tap at FFF

servered in a snifter.

A.

A murky purplish brown with a small amount of head. Actually, an ugly looking beer, but I kinda like the uniqueness it has.

S.

I get some bourbon with dark fruits and sweet caramelly malts. A great smelling beer.

T.

Kiss of bourbon with some sweet berries. (marionberries obviously). Some nice dark sweet sugary malts in there as well. A unique combination that simply tastes great.

M.

medium bodied with a balanced carbonation. A great smoothness and creaminess with it as well.

D.

I'd order this every time if I could but the combo of it being 9 bucks a pop and very limited, it won't happen. It's just an awesome tasting barrel-aged beer. Sweet with the berries and malts..almost like a dessert beer. Alcohol a little high, but you can't really taste it that much.

Imbibed at the FFF Brewpub 10/29/2010.

Appearance -- Pours a ruddy, chocolately brown with a finger of tan head. Never have I ever seen this hue in a beer.

Smell -- Bourbon, ripe blackberry, and caramelized malt. The aroma is primarily bourbon, though it doesn't smell at all boozy. The 9% abv distinction is quickly losing its credibility.

Taste -- Prominent bourbon flavor up front, but no bracing booziness whatsoever - incredibly smooth. Seriously, how is this 9% abv? Along with this gentle wave of bourbon is a bright, sweet/tart berry flavor lent by the marrionberries (essentially a blackberry - check Wikipedia). Holding this beer together is a base of well-caramelized malts.

Mouthfeel -- Medium in body, perhaps a hair lighter, with lively carbonation. Something about this just feels right.

Drinkability -- Honestly, Robert The Bruce doesn't really stand up to the influence of the barrel and those 'marionberries'; the base beer gets pretty well drowned out. Personally, I like barrel-aged beers to accentuate and lend an additional layer of complexity to the base, but this is altogether different. Still, it's delicious, so I can't judge too critically. Bourbon + blackberry is a pretty good combo - perhaps why Robert got lost in the shuffle. A must-try if you find yourself in Munster, IN within the next few weeks.

On-tap at Three Floyds. Served in a tulip and shared with d0b and naproxen.

A - Poured with a nice finger of tan foam that settles to a thick ring and a few spots of film haze, but not lace. Murky brown, bottom-of-the-barrel look.

S - Woodford Reserve. Barrel, vanilla, sweet caramel malt. Smells very similar to all the other barrel-aged beers I've had at Three Floyds. Still, it's quite nice!

T - Chocolate, vanilla, light grain whiskey. Not as much overt alcohol flavor in the taste, and surprisingly not very tannic either. I'm not picking up any marionberry.

M - Slightly zesty carbonation for the style but still quite moderate. Sticky finish and a touch of warmth, and perhaps a touch of woody dryness.

D - It took three of us to finish a glass and it was the last beer to go. I could have had one on my own but I don't sense this is very different from any other 3 Floyds barrel-aged brew. Also, I'm puzzled as to how the ABV went up so much - Robert The Bruce is only 6.5%!

From FFF beer list;
Our Robert The Bruce Scottish ale aged for a year in bourbon barrels with Marion Berries. Very rare and cool.
20 IBU, 9% ABV, $9 snifter

Pours a raspberry hinted brown color... Light reddish pink hues and big frothy foamy cap of big bubbles. Nice lacing forms solid rings.

The nose is bourbon, chocolate, ripe red and dark fruits, and something I can't quite put my finger on--- perhaps a little tartness?

Very tasty. Big sweetness... Light booziness... Tart berry and cherry notes... Creamy vanilla finish... Wow. What a crazy and unique barrel aged brew.

Body is pretty full... Very solid amount of carbonation, almost effervescent across my tongue.

This is a one and done for me, but not the beer's fault at all... I just need to get going. I strongly urge anyone in the area to stopby and try this before it is gone.
My initial moment was, "this reminds me of a chocolate framboise." If that doesn't sound appealing, I don't know what will!
