Growler poured into a Darkness tulip on 4/26/11

The appearance is a dull brown that settles a dull black. Big old two finger cap of foam, tan in color. Dissipates slowly at first then collapses halfway through. Lots of lace with some holes.
The aroma is a 50/50 split of overly hoppy and roasted dark malt. Potent citric and piney hops. Thin, earthy mid-section leads into notes of smoke and roasted malts. Hints of coffee and mild dark chocolate. Really hoppy.
Though the hops are prominent in the aroma, the roasted malts are the most appreciable on the palate. Earthy, mild, dry bitterness throughout. Subtle sweetness; apparently honey is in this - ha! Over time it takes on a characteristic that is more tangy than roasted, though said roastiness creeps back in as it warms up more. Grainy. Hints of coffee and cocoa. Seems a bit disjointed.
Reasonably full body. One downside is that carbonation is effervescent and fizzy. Grainy, earthy, musty finish. Coating.
It's a decent beer that doesn't seem to fit comfortably in any particular style. Enjoyable, but kind of over-the-top.
Serving type: growler
