22oz. bomber shared with brewslut on 8/24/11. Thanks to brewslut for acquiring this for me at the FFF brewpub.
A - Poured damn near close to black with a deep nutty coloration reminisecent of charred wood and a dense nougat-toned frothy cap that stood about a finger and a half high, then reduced to a creamy retention and thick swatches of lacing all around the glass.
S - Grassy and earthy hops combine with a tinge of smokey malt as well as a hint of peat and bitter chocolate notes. Digging deeper, I am surprised to unearth a hint of citrus rind lurking in the background amidst a backdrop of roasted coffee beans.
T - Given that this is a FFF beer, the flavor is obviously packed with copious amounts of hops - earthy, grassy, very green and leafy hops. No surprise there. The hop bitterness eventually gives way to a base of chocolate and coffee as well as a moderate smoked quality. Finishes with bitter chocolate notes, dry, leafy hop bitterness and light alcohol warmth on the palate.
M - Medium to full-bodied and robust with a smooth, silky texture and a hint of oily residue, giving the mouthfeel a slight sticky, clingy quality. Finishes with moderate bitterness on the palate.
D - Ragnarok is yet another reminder why FFF may very well be my favorite American craft brewery. This beer is as metal as it gets!
