Big thanks to Mike(Agentzero) for this.

A: Pours black with little head.

S: Bourbon, chocolate, oak and dark sugar.

T: Bourbon upfront followed by sweet chocolate, oak and a hint of vanilla. Slightly more alcohol heat then the others but still not what you expect from this much ABV

M: Thick body.

O: Such a great beer. Would love more.

Another back logged review. Can't believe I never added this one! A big thanks to Mike for cracking this one (a while back). Appearance is the same as all Dark Lords: opaque, black, thin head, minimal lacing. The nose starts with heavy molasses and brown sugar followed by vanilla, oak, bourbon, cherries, and some port notes. The barrel seems to have really tamed down the intense sweetness of this brew, at least on the nose. The taste is super smooth with the Pappy barrels shining through. Notes of toasted marshmallow, chocolate, cream, vanilla, with an undercurrent of dark fruit. The barrel has done wonders for this brew. Mouthfeel is light on carbonation and heavy on body. Overall, the barrel aging process has elevated this beer significantly and the PVW oozes throughout. Delicious.

Review #800!
Big thanks to Justin and Awat for helping to make this one happen. Popped at a random tuesday tasting.

A - Pours jet black with a finger tall head, quickly dissipating down to a light film, leaving down the sides of the glass.

S - Smells of fudgey brownies, super smooth bourbon, dash of vanilla extract, tobacco, toffee, dark fruits, and some smokey dark malts. The bourbon has just wrapped itself into the fabric of the beer, it smells so incredibly smooth.

T - Starts off with an incredible mix of smooth pappy bourbon and brownie batter sweetness slowly being joined by the vanilla, caramel, marshmallow, tobacco, oak and the smokey dark malts. Finish is sweet but nowhere near the regular version is, only a hint of booze burn, lingering long after the finish.

M - Medium to heavy body with moderate carbonation. It is still Dark Lord so it is definitely sweet but nowhere near what I expected, the bourbon really helps to cut it down to size.

O - Never thought I would ever see a bottle of this let alone drink it but I am glad we could make it happen because even at this age it is really killer. I still think I like Bourbon Vanilla a bit more but this was totally worth the effort, thanks again guys!

246/484 - enjoyed with a side-car of pappy 20yr

It does not pour as dark some other stouts out there - very dark brown. When in the glass there is absolutely no head or hint of one, dark brown liquor with huge alcohol legs.

The aroma is out of this world. Though I never had it fresh, I imagine that with the 3 years of age it has mellowed out and blended together. It's not bourbon+dark lord, it is a fusion of the two. Huge barrel sweetness of vanilla, marshmallow, sweet tobacco smoke, sweet toffee and some leather. Some soy sauce and dark chocolate come through. Very boozy, but something I really appreciate. As DL is 15% I'm sure this is closer to 17 - has the booziness of a Black Tuesday.

Tastes very sweet and boozy in a great way - many of the barrel notes of vanilla, marshmallow, and toffee/caramel steal the show. The dark lord sweetness definitely comes through and some of that soy sauce, but still very pleasant and all in good balance. Very fitting mouthfeel for these flavors and abv - full, not huge, very slick and kind of sticky.

With the close-to unreal expectations one would have going into this, it is hard to say it lives up to the hype and is that much better than any other world class BA stout, but there is definitely something unique about this. It is truly outstanding, and I hope to try other barrel treatments in the future.

Thanks to a few people we were able to put together the entire vertical and almost all the BA variants. Lots of fun gents! A big shout out to jbeatty for sending me this many moons ago.

From a 750 into a snifter
2011 vintage
Bottle 261 of 484

APPEARANCE: Just like all the rest of them. Pours relatively clear for an imperial stout. Produces a small, one finger medium-looking head that quickly fades to a wisp and ring. Black body in the glass with some carbonation evident. Only a ring remains until the end and leaves no real lacing down the glass. A little too light a pour and an average head at best.

SMELL: Pretty nice. Bourbon for sure, with vanilla, oak, caramel, sweet cream and some nice coconut on the nose. Nice chocolate notes as well in the back. Slightly milder than the bourbon version, but the light, dark chocolate notes mesh well with the rest of the PvW barrel. Pretty nice actually.

TASTE: Excellent for sure. Bourbon, vanilla, oak and some dark baker's chocolate at the swallow as well. Bold and boozy finish of bourbon barrel, coconut, sweet molasses and caramel from the base beer, as well as a touch of bitter dark chocolate for good measure. A little more boozy than the bourbon version, but the added complexity with the baker's chocolate and coconut notes make it pretty decadent. Bold and very enjoyable.

PALATE: Slightly lighter than the base beer, but still big enough. Just like the other DL variants as well. Medium body with medium levels of carbonation. Creamy enough, goes down fine and finishes rather sticky on the palate. A bit of a burn and some heat lingers.

OVERALL: By far the best BA variant, with the regular bourbon and cognac versions rounding out the top three. This is the only one I went back to for a second round. The barrel here works really well here, surpressing the soy and dominating sweetness of Dark Lord and bringing in an array of interesting and enoyable flavors into the mix. This is evidence that while the base beer is questionable at best, it is big and sturdy enough to barrel age with grace when the right barrels are used. The regular bourbon and cognac versions are more evidence of this. Loved this and could easily drink a bottle on my own. Cheers again jbeatty!
