Bottle 388/484 into a CBS snifter

A - Pours pitch black with essentially no head, just a very thin collar. No lacing.

S - Big chocolate aroma, and quite boozy as well. There is a sweetness to the chocolate aromas, and some nice dark fruits as well. The booziness knocks this one down a bit.

T - Chocolate and bourbon. A bit sweet, but really enjoyable. The bourbon has a bit of bite to it, but it mostly works well here. Also some nice dark fruits in the taste.

M - Very full mouthfeel, a bit viscous. Some sticky sweetness throughout, but quite smooth all around. A bit of numbing alcohol.

O - We had this side by side with Rare, and this is a bit rougher by comparison. It is also younger, but I don't think more time in the bottle will generate the same level of smoothness. Not a bad thing, and what I would expect from FFF: a big, somewhat aggressive, use of PvW barrels that yields a tasty BA stout.

Bottle as part of NWI tasting group 2011 DL night

A - Dark chocolate brown with a golden overtone around the edges. Not much of a head as it only leaves small bubbles on the sides. As the beer swirls in my glass, I can tell it's going to be a thick one as it leaves lots of residue on the sides

S - This has a great Pappy and bourbon nose with vanilla, sweet wheated bourbon, and the typical PVW butterscotch aspects

T - Vanilla, caramel, butterscotch are up front. As the beer goes, on there is a sweet milk chocolate that comes through as well. The finish is light oak and cinnamon. The flavors meld together well and make this one really delicious beer

MF - Smooth, thick and creamy mouthfeel with a slight stickiness to it. That slight sticky sweetness is what remains in the finish. The best way to describe this while drinking it is velvety

O - This is an amazing beer and worth the bottles we had to trade to try it. It is a sweet beer that really allows the PVW aspects to shine through. I was also amazed at how much it did shine through compare to the bourbon DL's that I've had before.

246/484 - enjoyed with a side-car of pappy 20yr

It does not pour as dark some other stouts out there - very dark brown. When in the glass there is absolutely no head or hint of one, dark brown liquor with huge alcohol legs.

The aroma is out of this world. Though I never had it fresh, I imagine that with the 3 years of age it has mellowed out and blended together. It's not bourbon+dark lord, it is a fusion of the two. Huge barrel sweetness of vanilla, marshmallow, sweet tobacco smoke, sweet toffee and some leather. Some soy sauce and dark chocolate come through. Very boozy, but something I really appreciate. As DL is 15% I'm sure this is closer to 17 - has the booziness of a Black Tuesday.

Tastes very sweet and boozy in a great way - many of the barrel notes of vanilla, marshmallow, and toffee/caramel steal the show. The dark lord sweetness definitely comes through and some of that soy sauce, but still very pleasant and all in good balance. Very fitting mouthfeel for these flavors and abv - full, not huge, very slick and kind of sticky.

With the close-to unreal expectations one would have going into this, it is hard to say it lives up to the hype and is that much better than any other world class BA stout, but there is definitely something unique about this. It is truly outstanding, and I hope to try other barrel treatments in the future.

I brought this one. Side-by-side with all the other BA Dark Lords. Bottle 49/484 into a snifter. From notes.

Appearance is same as the others. Not much to see but big, bad-ass legs.

The aroma of Pappy is unmistakable here. Super bourbon forward mixed with hints of fig, plum, prune, chocolate, molasses. Sharp but balanced. Very aromatic.

Sweet chocolate, plum, fudge, molasses, sweet soy sauce, and big bourbon notes smooth this one over. Sweet, chocolate and syrup finish. Tasty!

Same feel as the others. Surprisingly, this one isn't too harsh going down considering the overall nose and taste.

Definitely one of the better Pappy beers out there as it displays the barrel aging impressively without covering the subtleties of the other flavors.

Bottle generously shared by Mike/AgentZero.

Pitch black, somewhat oily appearance with a thin brown head. Clings impressively to the walls of the cheap plastic cup I drank it out of.

Sweet, mellow bourbon and chocolate are the first thing my nose picks up. The Pappy barrel did good work here, lending overt but smooth bourbon tones. Plenty of caramel and molasses, vanilla and chocolate. Just a touch of booze.

This tastes rather awesome, possibly the best of all the barrel aged Dark Lords. Incredibly smooth and integrated bourbon, lending layers of caramel and vanilla, paired with molasses and chocolate from the base beer. Very sweet, basically dessert in a glass, but it's hard to imagine a barrel aged stout tasting much better.

Couldn't drink a ton of this due to the sheer richness of it, but it's remarkably good in small quantities.

I had this at the epic tasting last weekend held at finewinemike's. Poured from the bottle into a Colossus snifter.

Appearance: Pours black with just a little light coming through at the edges. There is hardly any head at all on this one.

Smell: Sweet and chalked full of roasted malt. There is some dark chocolate as well as vanilla and caramel. Really smooth bourbon in there as well.

Taste: Just amazing. Really smooth, the bourbon and the roast mix flawlessly. Also getting some caramel, dark fruit, and chocolate notes as well.

Mouthfeel: The body is quite thick with just a tingle of carbonation and a slightly dry finish.

Overall: This is so much better than the base beer. The barrel aging has done amazing things to this beer. I would have this one again anytime, but I'm not so sure I'll get the chance.

First bottle we crack open for our awesome tasting. Big thanks to deadmule for bringing this. Poured into my Duck Rabbit Snifter. Bottle #109/484

A- Pours a dark black with a small mocha head that dissipates quick leaving no lacing.

S- Bourbon warms the nostrils, dark fruits including plumb, figs, raisins, dark chocolate, oak and roasted malt. Smells great, but the ABV makes itself known.

T- Much smoother than the nose suggested with sweet earthy bourbon, plumb, fig, raisins as well as dark berries with notes of blackberries and black cherries. Oak and roasted malt follow.

M- Medium body and low carbonation. A tad thin for what I was expecting, but has a syrupy mouthfeel that finishes a tad boozy and sweet.

O- Remarkably smooth for a 15% beer. A great sipper and one of my favorites out of the 4 variants, with the other being the vanilla brandy.

Thanks Brian!
