Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

A blend of Alpha King and Robert the Bruce aged in bourbon barrels with star anise and Curaçao orange peels for 1 year. Meant to approximate the classic cocktail Sazerac.

Tried this on tap a few weeks ago at Three Floyd's brewpub

This beer is a blend of Alpha King with Robert the Bruce that is aged in bourbon barrels with star anise.

I'm a big fan of their beers, but this one was just downright awful. Unless you love black licorice this beer will most likely not be for you. Couldn't even finish it.

What a weird beer. Looks nice, a pretty auburn brown. Thankfully the lovely bartender (btw Greg you are adorable and I would've left you my number had 3F not been a brief stop on my cross-country roadtrip) explained it was their take on a beery Sazerac cocktail, so I had some framework to enjoy the thing. Fairly medicinal, the star anise was prominent with a decent measure of bourbon and just a hint of orange peel. I liked it, but was more than satisfied with my taster.

On tap @ FoBAB

A: deep red pour, some head initially, poor retention

S: anise attack all over, lots of herbal qualities with notes of basil and mint in the background. This does not smell like anything that resembles beer. Smells more like a pungent tea.

T: just like the nose... black licorice dominates and overwhelms the palate, basil and mint are part of the supporting cast, the flavors are so overwhelming, its like biting directly into a piece of dark licorice. Again, this comes off more like an herbal tea.

MF: thin body, high carbonation

O: not my cup of tea (pun fully intended)

On-tap @ FFF.

"Alpha King blended with Robert the Bruce then aged in a bourbon barrel with star anise and orange peel."

A - Pours brownish/red color, thin collar, spotty lace, no cap.

S - Black liquorish, very medicinal, orange peel. The black liqorish is really overpowering anything else...I'm guess that's the star anise. Not exactly sure I'd know what that smells like. Anyway, very medicinal, slight orange peel...meh. Not sure about this one.

T - Black liqorish, oak, bourbon, very herbal with a spicy/medicinal finish. Not my cup o' tea. Not a fan of black liquorish to begin with. This beer is very...interesting...yeah, that's it.

M - Medium to full, good carbonation, dry oak finish.

O - Quite possibly the worst beer I've ever say at the brewpub and drank. Not my thing at all. Way to much spice, herbs, black liquorish. Meh...no more please!

I had a taster of this at the pub a few days ago and I'll say while it's not to my tastes, I think some folks would really like it. The aroma is powerful with the start anise and burbon really dominating, a hint ot the orange came out, but after tasting, all I could smell was the bourdon and black licorice flavor (start anise). To me the bourbon overpowers the rest of the beer, so if you're more of a bourbon drinker, this would be right up your alley. It's interesting and as advertised, I'd say the malt profile just doesn't stand up to the strong bourbon and licorice flavors.

Blood red to brown combo of Alpha King and Robert the Bruce aged in bourbon barrels. Star anise is evidently cheap, or just very potent, because its abundantly clear in the nose. With the sweet malt added, smells just like anise candy that can be found around Christmas in Dutch bakeries. If you pay attention, the orange of the description can be found tucked away in the side of the anise. Syrupy sweet base with more anise, but the AK hop taste--grassy and grapefruit--pops in the middle. Add to that some peat and bourbon, and this is one interesting beer. I don't think I'll take this one home, but it is one incredible beer that I'm honored to try; the type of beer that's a testament to the art and creatively of brewing that those in the club seek out. Those reading this review can ponder the difference between my rating and those on BeerAdvocate that were much harsher. In part, I'm guessing the anise is a tough mistress when so strong. But, if you're looking for the beer frontier--this is it.
