found for $72.95 a case plus tax. psyched to get my grubby little hands on it...
this one poured a huge volcanic head of tan foam, a full 3 fingers tall in my duvel chalice. it settles at a good clip, I can see the carbonation bing replaced at the bottom of the head where the beer meets the foam. not completely opaque but pretty damn close, the head is much better than many porters poured into this glass, the head initially reminded me of kid from kid n play... good looking stuff (and the lacing is superb)
aroma is of deep chocolate and vague hops, cocoa powder and some coffee notes... nothing thrilling here to my nose honestly, slightly better than average.
super smooth, velvety and slick, great mouthfeel. dominant burnt flavor is deep and fantastic.
the hops are not overpowering in the least, to me they are "just right". The flavors are not all over the place here, they keep it rather simple and it is a readily drinkable beer. Where as some of the 3F line bash you over the head with hops (not a bad thing) this is balanced. I am really enjoying the burnt flavor over the bitterness.
a great american porter. not worth mortgaging the house over but if you see it, definitely pick up a bottle.

A: Pours a murky brown-black with an enormous, thick khaki head that takes some time to recede.
S: Aromas of coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, burnt toast, roasted grain, and kola nut vie for dominance against aromas of grass, herbs, grapefruit, lemon, lime, bitter orange, and juniper berry.
T: The entry offers up notes of coffee, dark chocolate, heavy cream, vanilla bean, leather, burnt toast, dried black cherry, kola nut, and roasted grain which are chased by flavors of lemon, lime, grapefruit, kumquat, bitter orange, herbs, grass, cedar, and juniper berry. The finish is slick and oily with a turbulent balance of roasted malt, bitter citrus, and pungent herb flavors.
M: Medium-bodied, slick, and silky. Carbonation is gentle and unobtrusive. All in all, this beer could stand to feature carbonation that is a little firmer, but this is a very minor qualm.
O: This is an excellent porter, one that expertly presents a balance of malt and hop aromas and flavors. I would recommend it highly to fans of the style.
