Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice.
Appearance: Pours pitch black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid two fingers of tan head with decent retention. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing around the glass.
Smell: A very dark and roasty aroma with big hints of chocolate and a pretty strong hop presence. Dark roasted barley malts with big hints of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, biscuit, burnt toast, sweet caramel, toffee, cream, grains, and nuts. Sweet hints of the Mexican sugar come through. Big scent of earthy hops that give a black IPA like aroma. Hints of spicy pine resin and grass. Subtle citrus hints of orange and lemon. A very good and interesting aroma.
Taste: Like it smells, a dark, roasty, and hoppy taste with big notes of chocolate malt and spicy hops. Upfront taste of dark roasted barley malts with notes of dark chocolate and cocoa, coffee roast, burnt toast, biscuit, caramel, toffee, grains, cream, and nuts. Big balancing presence of hops with earthy and herbal notes of spicy pine resin and grass. Slight citrus notes of orange and lemon. Sweet notes of the Mexican sugar. A pretty unique and good taste. Its like a cross between a stout and black IPA.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, moderately slick, and somewhat oily. Pretty smooth.
Overall: A very solid dark brew. Its more like a black ale than porter. A nice combination of roast and spicy hops.

A: Pours a murky brown-black with an enormous, thick khaki head that takes some time to recede.
S: Aromas of coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, burnt toast, roasted grain, and kola nut vie for dominance against aromas of grass, herbs, grapefruit, lemon, lime, bitter orange, and juniper berry.
T: The entry offers up notes of coffee, dark chocolate, heavy cream, vanilla bean, leather, burnt toast, dried black cherry, kola nut, and roasted grain which are chased by flavors of lemon, lime, grapefruit, kumquat, bitter orange, herbs, grass, cedar, and juniper berry. The finish is slick and oily with a turbulent balance of roasted malt, bitter citrus, and pungent herb flavors.
M: Medium-bodied, slick, and silky. Carbonation is gentle and unobtrusive. All in all, this beer could stand to feature carbonation that is a little firmer, but this is a very minor qualm.
O: This is an excellent porter, one that expertly presents a balance of malt and hop aromas and flavors. I would recommend it highly to fans of the style.
