22oz bottle poured into a Dogfish Head signature glass.
A - Pours a super dark brown that closely approaches black in the glass. A finger of frothy mocha head hangs around for a couple of minutes and slowly falls to leave a thick coating of webby lacing on the glass.
S - Nice roasty base of malt, touches of chocolate, notes of coffee, hints of dark fruits, some soy sauce, barely there brown sugary sweetness. Faintly herbal with an almost wintergreen-like twist. Assertive hop presence that is spicy and bitter. Quite interesting aroma.
T - Roasty with strong coffee notes, rather burnt and more than a little astringency to go along with the char. Some tart cherries, dark fruits. Not as complex as the aroma...extremely roasty and burnt from beginning to end.
M - Medium bodied with a crisp mid level carbonation. Roasty and charred throughout with a lingering acrid character. A rather high astringency that goes a bit beyond what could be expected with the high burnt flavors alone. Has a lingering tart, sour cherry fruitiness.
O - Solid porter full of roast and burnt/charred malt character. Dry overall, rather tart, lightly fruity. Enjoyable on this cold fall night.

A: Pours a murky brown-black with an enormous, thick khaki head that takes some time to recede.
S: Aromas of coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, burnt toast, roasted grain, and kola nut vie for dominance against aromas of grass, herbs, grapefruit, lemon, lime, bitter orange, and juniper berry.
T: The entry offers up notes of coffee, dark chocolate, heavy cream, vanilla bean, leather, burnt toast, dried black cherry, kola nut, and roasted grain which are chased by flavors of lemon, lime, grapefruit, kumquat, bitter orange, herbs, grass, cedar, and juniper berry. The finish is slick and oily with a turbulent balance of roasted malt, bitter citrus, and pungent herb flavors.
M: Medium-bodied, slick, and silky. Carbonation is gentle and unobtrusive. All in all, this beer could stand to feature carbonation that is a little firmer, but this is a very minor qualm.
O: This is an excellent porter, one that expertly presents a balance of malt and hop aromas and flavors. I would recommend it highly to fans of the style.
