Alpha King’s festive cousin. A big American Christmas Porter brewed with English chocolate malt, Mexican sugar and of course, tons of strange American hops. Cheers!

Poured from a 22oz bottle to a Dogfish Head Signature Glass.

Color: Black with a light brown head.

Smell: Chocolate and earthy hops up front. Followed by sugar and slight smoke.

Taste: Same as the aroma.

Mouthfeel: Creamy, slight coarse, good carbonation with a dry finish.

Overall: A well rounded porter with a good balance. Medium bodied and a nice Winter brew. Cheers.

$8.49 for a bomber from Discount Liquor in Milwaukee, WI.

A: deep, dark color, opaque, poured with light brown full head that dissipated to thin veil
S: full, rich, deep roasted malt, chocolate, cocoa, made my mouth water!
T: just like the nose and lived up to everything I was anticipating from the first smell
M: well-rounded, deep, velvety, highly, highly drinkable

A: Pours a dark tootsie roll brown with a two finger dark mocha head with lacing and spiderwebs on the edges of the glass as it went down.

S: Fresh hop dry hopping of citrus , pine and grapefruit. Dark roast malt is there, but definitely a pleasantly Black IPA aroma going on.

T: Very strong and forward hop presence with sweet aroma hop that makes the first sip decadent. A great bouquet of pine and citrus hops blended with mocha, coffee, and sweet malt. The finish is slightly licorice with cocoa and a bit of vegetal taste.

M: Medium to light mouthfeel, which for a 6% porter seems about right. Mild carbonation.

O: This is a delicious American porter, I would drink this frequently I suspect if it were available around me.

Great Porter...WITH HOPS.... Pours a dense black color, no light gets through. Big tan head with a hard pour. Good head retention and lacing.
Impressive aroma. Roasted malts...chocolate malt ahd piney hops!!!

Tastes great as well. The roasted malt and chocolate are dominant, but the hops provide a nice (and potent) balance. The overall mix is great.

This is a rich, smooth porter with a following resinous/strong piney hops presence.

A very good Porter for any occasion.

2011 Bottle

A: Dark brown color by pour and has a tan colored head that is pretty prominent. Carries a nice, thick lace during the drink.

S: Roasted malts and hoppy/bitter. Coffee maybe?

T: Malted porter nature but has a bitter flavor at the end. Has a piney quality that wasn't expected. No real aftertaste that holds. Kind of light.

M: Thicker feel during the drink. Sweet, hoppy.

Overall, I enjoyed this porter. Much hoppier than most that I have had recently, so it was a good change of pace. I will look forward to having again next year, but I won't go out of my way to get it.

A: A very dark brown pour with a bit of red around the edges. Big, dense light brown head. Retention is excellent. Solid lacing.

S: Nice roasted malt with creamy chocolate. Pine comes through as it warms. A little bit of earthy hops.

T: Roasted malt, pine, earth and maybe a hint of smoke. Nice surge of chocolate in the finish along with a bit of earthy hops to round it out.

M: Medium bodied, very smooth.

O: I really liked the balance of complimentary flavors in this one. Definitely on the hoppy side for a porter but it's not a black IPA or anything like that. Smooth, creamy and drinkable to boot.

Bottle (2011)

Acquired via trade
Thanks, dannyfrost!

Dark brown body with ruby highlights. The head is light brown, moderately sized, and eventually leaves spots of stick down the glass.

A fine aroma consisting of roasted malt, earthy and somewhat piney hops, a bit of smoke, and a small amount of licorice.

The flavor is dominated by the roasted malts complemented by dark fruits, earthy hops, and some licorice.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

An above average example of the style, but after having this multiple times now, it always leaves something to be desired.
