Alpha King’s festive cousin. A big American Christmas Porter brewed with English chocolate malt, Mexican sugar and of course, tons of strange American hops. Cheers!

Bottle from Rebekah as part of an awesome FFF box. Thanks again! Pours nearly black with a super creamy two finger mocha colored head. Big hop aroma that I wasn't expecting. Pine galore, some lemon, some roast, chocolate, and big sweet sugar. Big chocolate and hop mixture in flavor. Lots of bitterness and pine, some sweet chocolate, then a bit of buttering roasted malts. Medium bodied, pretty smooth, with medium plus carbonation. Very drinkable. Dry finish. I was not expecting this at all, and for some reason was thinking this would be a big sweet chocolate dessert. I like it though, and it is a big hoppy porter bordering on black IPA. Glad I finally got my hands on this one.

A - This is a beautiful pour, dark, almost black, topped with a lovely head with persistence and complex latticing.

S - The nose gave me the first sign that I was in for something different. The hops were forward, with only hints of the chocolate, roast and malt I expect from a porter.

T - Confirming what my nose had told me, the initial flavors of coffee quickly gave way to a strong citrus and pine smack of hoppiness. The finish was strong and bitter, and that dry, biting flavor held long after I finished. Not unpleasant, but a more powerfully hopped brew than I anticipated.

M - Moderate carbonation and a fairly thin consistency. No motor oil, to be sure. Strong drying sensation on the back-end.

O - If you are looking for the kind of friendly spice and roasted goodness you might expect from an Xmas Porter, you will not find it here. Not that that is a bad thing. This beer was extraordinary. I would not have expected the citrus to live so well with the roasted notes. Unfortunately, I think the hops is a touch out of balance, eclipsing some of the other notes.

22oz Bottle (Winter 2013 edition) to DFH Signature Glass

Appearance - 1 inch mocha colored head ( which left some decent lacing on the glass) color of the beer is dark black

Aroma - hops, roasted malts, dark chocolate

Taste - coffee, chocolate, little bit of citrus, finishes with some hops

Mouthfeel - good carbonation, creamy, dry finish

Overall - This is a very unique porter, which I definitely enjoyed. I haven't had a porter with such a hop presence, guess it's to be expected from FFF. I will probably pick this up on a yearly basis.

Appearance is a dark black with a half finger of tan head.
Aroma is coffee and chocolate with leather and malt.
Flavor is less than the nose but still a nice punch of coffee and leather.
Not overly bitter or very carbonated.
Mouthfeel is thin and slightly dry. A little too oily for me.
Another solid offering from three Floyd's.

Pours deep brown in color with small amounts of light making it through the beer. Head is about 2 fingers tan and has great retention.

Smell has some interesting things going on. Large amounts of grassy hops are forward along with a big presence of chocolate malt that fades quickly to reveal it is dominated by more herbal grassy hops.

Taste has lots of roasted chocolate malt flavors forward. There is a slight roasted bitterness before a large spicy hop presence finishes with mild bitterness. Hoppy oils persist on the palate into the aftertaste but thankfully with not much bitterness. Pretty well balanced

Mouthfeel is great, thick body soft feel and mild carbonation leave this very drinkable. Lots of hoppy oils and resin last on the palate

Overall this was a decent porter. There were lots of good typical porter flavors however the hops overpowered the brew and potentially hid some awesome complexity.
