Notes/Commercial Description:
Alpha King’s festive cousin. A big American Christmas Porter brewed with English chocolate malt, Mexican sugar and of course, tons of strange American hops. Cheers!

Poured from a 22 oz bottle, via jaustin72403

A: Pours a deep brown, nearly black, under a fingers worth of tan head. Pretty good retention and nice lace.

S: Smells of a light coffee, slight wood, a little bit of fruit and citrus hop. Good aroma.

T: Very nice fruity sweetness and citrus up front, followed by a mild coffee and ending in a light roasted malt and moderate roasted bitters. Citrus, mostly grapefruit, hop qualities hang around throughout. A speck of chocolate to found as well. Very good tasting porter.

M/D: Full bodied, slightly creamy, carbonation is light. Drinkability is really good on this one. Makes me think of an IPA with roasted malt. My first FFFs brew, very impressed.

22 Oz bottle

Black with brown frothy head. Head fades quickly to a thin film.

Smell of chocolate, coffee and a great roasted note. Also a much stronger hops character than you would expect (or maybe exactly what you would expect from three floyds).

Taste has a very nice bitterness up front. With the chocolate flavors combined it reminds of bakers chocolate.

The bitterness builds and leaves that cheek puckering aftertaste. Not entirely unpleasant but would prevent me from drinking too many in one sitting. Overall a nice heavy beer to keep you warm on a cold winter night.

Another nice offering from three floyds.

Picked up a bomber at Riley's here in Madison. At 8.99 a bottle, my biggest beer splurge to date.

Pours crude oil black with a couple fingers of capuccino froth. Nose is vibrant and clean, with notes of menthol/piney hops, tabacco, espresso beans and dark chocolate cocoa. Taste is a tale of two beers, reminded me a lot of Founders Black Rye, with the juxtaposition of big floral hoppiness and chocolately roasted malts. Mouthfeel was rich and creamy. This is an impressive American porter, I don't know if I can put it above the Edmund Fitzgerald though, certainly not on value. At half the price it's a steal, at $9/bottle it's a one time indulgence.

This pours a dark black with a frothy, pretty mocha head. On the nose there is a deep pine mixed with roasted coffee. On the tongue the roasted malt and coffee come to the fore with a bit of hop bitterness at the back. In the mouth, it's pretty similar to Alpha King, a bit of a buzzsaw, which works pretty well here but cuts down a bit on the drinkability. Overall I'm a big fan.

Taken from notes around Christmas holiday 2008. 2008 batch recently purchased from West Side Liquors.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into my over-sized Duvel tulip.

Pours an attractive deep brown, opaque color with some light root beer colored edges sneaking out around the edges. A 2 inch tan head dissolves to a nice halo after sitting in my glass for a few minutes.

Three Floyds, back in action! Dark, sweet malts and citric hops are all over the place! In the backseat, I get some freshly roasted coffee and alcohol.

My oh my, this is a hopped up stout! Rich, decadent and highly enjoyable blend of Three Floyd's goodness. This is too easy to put back. If you want a nice, solid, hoppy stout, you must try this one. Fantastic!

This is an interesting brew. Pours a nice head, creamy and chocolatey. Dark chocolate looking almost opaque black. Very full mouthfeel. Smells of dark chocolate and tons of hops. Very odd to have these hops in this brew. Leaves good lacing and is a nice refreshing beer.

The pour produces a glass full of light-absorbing liquid blackness topped by a half-inch, frothy tan head that leaves spots of lacing and retains well enough.

Lifting the glass to my nose reveals a festive cavalcade of aromas--chocolate, roasted chestnuts, freshly halved clementines, and pine needles. Maybe even a little black licorice.

The taste is wonderful, a perfectly balanced, full flavored but nuanced combination of roast, chocolate, nuts, and sweet citrus balanced against resiny hop bitterness, with a nice dry, slightly tart finish and a mildly lingering spice. It's basically a really good porter with a buttload of American hops.

The mouthfeel really shines here, it's bright and crisp and creamy. Good body. Light carbonation. Just spot on.

Highly drinkable.

Alpha Klaus pours brown, almost black with a huge, creamy tan head that faded quickly. The aroma was predominately coffee. The taste was also coffee with an alcohol taste as it warmed up. Carbonation is not all spent in the head, medium body. Drinkability is OK. Not bad for a porter, but Three Floyd's missed their usual mark of excellence.
