Yellow wax 2011, as part of an Imperial Stout tasting on DL Day 2012.

Appearance: Didn't pour black. Taken aback by this, expecting it to be opaque like pitch. Left its characteristic yellow sheen on the glass, and had a nice head with plenty of lacing, considering the style.

Nose: Fruity, loaded with dark fruits. Not any notable roastiness, a bit of chocolate. Hint of hops.

Flavor: Fruity, and sickly sweet. Molasses and licorice.

Mouthfeel: Way too watery to be called an imperial anything. Last time I tried DL, it was like motor oil. I've had thicker milk stouts than this vintage.

Overall: The sweetness killed this vintage's enjoyability. Underattenuated? Too fruity and light. Needs some roastiness and robustness to compete. I'd rather have a Ten FIDY.

2011 bottle thanks to turkob. Thanks!

A: dark black, but lets light through a bit with clear edges and brown highlights. The head is much bigger than I thought it would be, and some lacing stays.

S: some sweetness and roasted malt and a bit of hops, but not a huge smell.

T: sweet, full of roasted malt flavor, some bitter hops. The flavor lingers forever, it's so sticky.

M: heavy body with light but extant carbonation. Not bad.

O: a bit sweet, and I am dissappointed in the body or flavor when compared to Darkness and Marshal Zhukov, but it's good overall.

Bottle share in Hoboken, NJ.

2011 Vintage.

A: Pours an opaque midnight black in color. The beer has a very thin dark tan head that quickly reduces to nothing. There is no lacing observed with this beer.

S: There are aromas of cocoa, vanilla, bourbon, caramel, and milk chocolate. A very nice complexity to the aroma of this beer. Some dark fruit sweetness from the plum/dark cherries and just the slightest hint of soy.

T: The flavor of this beer is quite interesting with a good amount of sweetness. There is some definite dark fruit, plum and dark cherries, contributing to the sweetness upfront. After that, the flavors of the vanilla, bourbon, chocolate, and caramel come through next. After that, there is a slightly unpleasant soy sauce taste that comes and then goes. Finally, the finish of this beer is a little of bitter chocolate.

M: On the lighter side of full bodied with light amounts of carbonation. A little thinner than I desired.

O: Very enjoyable and I'm glad that I had the opportunity to try this one. Maybe a little more highly rated that I expected after tasting it but definitely a good beer. I found the hints of soy sauce a little unpleasant but otherwise the complexity of the flavor/smell was great.

A: Very dark beer with a small head.

S: Delicious bitter smell.

T: Great taste of menthol light, sweet and brown sugar.

M: Good ratio, light carbonation and even somewhat syrupy.

O: Special delicious aftertaste, drinking well is really top of the bill.

(I've got the yellow one)
