Sampled courtesy of my cousin who brought it to another cousins wedding reception. 2006 edition. Sure beats the Bud that was on tap there. The labeling and packaging with the melted wax is a great presentation. The beer poured a dense midnight black color, just like motor oil, with a brown right around the ends of the glass. The aroma is toasted and a bit sweet, molasses. Very impressive nose. The taste has a nice tough of toasted, but not overly done, coffee and a powerful sweet taste. At times the sweetness was the dominant force in this one but this is still a very fine brew. With a bit of aging, I get this thing would mellow out a bit and would be even more impressive.

A- Pours a beautiful pitch black color, motor oil consistency, nice brown color head. Deep red color can be seen around the edge of the body.

S- Cherry, anise, tawny port, butterscotch, fig, earthy, oaky, w/ a hint of smokiness.

T- Starts out with a nice big buttery note, then some nice dark chocolate, bourbon, some dark fruit, the finish is long and has a great lingering bitterness.

M- Huge thick malty, superb.

D- Very drinkable for being 13%. Great beer.

Pours a black tar color with a decent head and some lacing on the small glass I had the priviledge of tasting. Unreal flavors going on: Vanilla, chocolate, cherries, coffee, orange...full of flavor. Yet, they all blend nicely together. I have trouble putting down beers over 9-10 percent, but I can see drinking a few of these, but extemely potent and highly drinkable. One of my top 20 without a doubt.

Vintage 2010- Green wax. Let me start off by saying "WOW"...had this as part of our Blind Epic Beer Tasting Event and it took 1st overall. List included 2010 Darklord, Rare Bourbon County Stout, 2011 KBS, 2011 Hanahpu, 2010 Abyss.

A- Pours pitch black with a minimal tan head that dissipates quickly. Very thick with decent carbonation.

S- Chocolate malt, dried fruit, espresso and wet barrel. Smells very good.

T- Taste was exceptional and got better as it warmed up. Did not expect it to be this sweet. Sweet roasted taste with a touch of vanilla as it warmed up. Alcohol was undetectable with such a high ABV. Very well hidden.

M- Mouthfeel is smooth and thick. Light carbonation.

O- Overall, this is the best beer that I've tasted so far. I believe the beer becomes more balancned and complex as it warms up. I'm anxious to get another bottle to cellar and enjoy this experience again.

Poured Black with small tan head. Aroma is mostly deep, rich Dark fruit with some Cocoa and a hint of roasted malts. Flavor is as smooth as it gets with a hint of alcohol, Coffee, chocolate, sweet malts and thick heavy molasses that stained the glass with every sip. Several layers of flavor. This is a real good Imperial Stout, But just as good as what I can get around Ohio & PA.
(Voodoo, Hoppin' Frog...) And I don't have to stand in line for those.

Shared this bottle with my brother. A 2011

Popped the bottle with an t violation.

After reading reviews I was skeptical.

The nose is full of berry, leather and a hints of roast very nice and complex

The taste is all over the place it starts with a berry flavor raisins and plums.the taste quickly goes roasted but the sweetness remains. Make no doubts this is a cloying beer. I wanted it to be better than it is but frankly it's not. The beer seems unfinished, not fully fermented, as a homebrew if I miss pitched yeast I would be able to get a beer like this.

We both agree d if this beer had coffee, bourbon or had been more attenuated it would be world class

2012 Bottle.

I have heard mixed reviews of this beer, so going in I was very weary.

It pours a very dark black with a tan head.

The nose is all sweetness. Chocolate dominates, but some vanilla peaked in the background? not super sure if that is the smell.

The taste is Chocolate. Thick sweet chocolate. No denying this is a dessert beer. I enjoyed this bottle on Christmas day after dinner and it fit the bill. It fit the bill so much with the second half of the bomber I added some vanilla ice cream for a beer float, and it was pure heaven. If this beer came with vanilla Ice Cream it would get a 5 down the board. But still a very solid brew.

Originally Sampled on 14 December 2002. This baby is thick, malty, w/ tastes of cocoa powder & chocolate on the palate. Dark Lord has a wonderfully soft mouthfeel. You can easily spend lots of time sipping this one. I just wish that Three Floyds would bottle it.

A long day left me jones'n for a thick RIS. Since Thomas sent this over as an extra in a super-box (thank you!), I decided to give the 2012 DL one last shot before 2013. Poured at cellar temp into a Hill Farmstead tulip.

A - Pours pretty dark, light tan and short head that quickly becomes lacing. Looks thick, but the lacing doesn't stick well at all to the glass. The rest is pretty good. The weak legs is all that's holding this back.

S - Sweet soy sauce. Some roast seems to be there, but it is covered in sugar. Notes of sweetened condensed milk and coffee. At some points it makes me think of this 50/50 condensed milk and espresso I once tried.

T - Sweet dark fruits, molasses, coffee. Lots of sugar. Sweet coffee and dark malts become so dominating. It doesn't seem too complex once the middle starts. The sweetness starts to subside in the finish and non-sugared coffee shows itself. I don't get any booze, which is impressive.

M - Very thick; not the thickest, but very thick.

O - It is better than most shelf-RIS in my opinion. In a world of Hill Farmstead, Surly and Cigar City, and Bruery, I have a tough time with DL. An immense amount of sweetness really covers the flavors. Any transition between flavors tastes like sugar. This bottle is miles beyond what I tried at DLD though, so it has improved. FFF should just throw all of their DL in barrels and be done with it.
