On-tap at Scratch. Poured into a monstrous brandy balloon-type glass a rusty amber without a whole lot of head. Lovely colour and left a lot of lacing on the glass.
The smell is wonderful. I didn't get any buckwheat, but a bunch of sweet malt, citric hop, some spice and light astringency. Taste was a bit of a surprise. Having eaten buckwheat noodles/pasta, not to mention sampled the Rogue buckwheat ales on numerous occasions, I was initially disappointed to taste nothing resembling buckwheat in this beer. That said, is sure is a wonderful barleywine. A bright hoppy number that doesn't begin to hint at it's considerable alcohol content. Citrus, spice, candi sugar, toasted brioche, notes of wheat, gingerbread and tropical fruit. Young and brash and really quite bitter. Not exactly what I was expecting.
Slick and fairly full mouthfeel. Paired with an assortment of cheeses and bread - an ideal complement to the flavors, and a handy diversion from what is an entirely too drinkable beer. Slightly disappointing in that it is not much different to the other beers in this series but great nonetheless.

I can't believe I didn't rate this one when I had it, unfortunately my notes have no date on when I tried this one, but here is what my notes say on it...
Pours a cloudy hazy amberish brown color, with a super thick off white khaki head. Smells very malty with a hint of hoppy sweetness. Initial taste - malt bomb but very pleasant balanced finish with aftertaste slightly bitter and sweet. low carbonation definitely unlike anything else, probably thanks to the buckwheat! good boo goop!
