Poured from a 750ml bottle into a New Belgium globe. No freshness info on bottle.
Appearance: Pours a hazy medium caramel brown with golden edges and an enormous 3-4 finger foamy light tan head which dissipates slowly into a heap of foam in the middle of the glass. Excellent head retention and lacing.
Smell: Sweet caramel malt, lemon zest pine and a bit of boozy alcohol.
Taste: Sweet malt and bitter citrus up front followed by pine and a touch of bready malt in the middle before ending with bitter citrus and booze at the finish. Aftertaste is quite bitter with just a hint of sweet pineapple. I'm really surprised that I'm not picking up a lot of wheat character in this one.
Mouthfeel: Full-bodied with a good amount of carbonation. The hop oils are quite sticky and completely coat the palate.
Drinkability: Decent drinkability. You may want to have a friend help you finish the bottle. Otherwise, you're going to be feeling it.
Overall: Good beer overall. While I'm not at all familiar with wheatwines (this is my first), I'll say it's a solid beer and I'd basically compare it to a barleywine. This was my first beer from either Mikkeller or Three Floyds and I'd say it didn't really disappoint. Worth a try.

I can't believe I didn't rate this one when I had it, unfortunately my notes have no date on when I tried this one, but here is what my notes say on it...
Pours a cloudy hazy amberish brown color, with a super thick off white khaki head. Smells very malty with a hint of hoppy sweetness. Initial taste - malt bomb but very pleasant balanced finish with aftertaste slightly bitter and sweet. low carbonation definitely unlike anything else, probably thanks to the buckwheat! good boo goop!
