A: Pond scum orange brown and very opaque. This one is topped with a fairly thick light tan pancake batter head which has pretty good retention and very good lacing.
S: Brown sugar, caramel, Forest floor, and the aroma of not barnyard but hayfield come to mind. The Buckwheat used provides a subtle but interesting quality. Somehow Im reminded of old wooden patio benches, or sawdust.
T: Refreshingly crisp (at least more so than I might have expected) yet showing big bold flavors. Pine and woody bitterness meet muddled biscuity sweet flavors. Bread crust qualities show up but carrying both bitter and sweet qualities in a nice way. I'm reminded of a wet stone like quality I usually save for wine descriptions as well. in a faint sort of way one can taste and smell buckwheat being crushed with a mortar and pestle.
M: Quite good in this area, this is sticky as all hell but carries enough carbonation and bitterness to pop.
O: This is good stuff. It reminds me of a bizzaro world version of bigfoot to some degree however. Im not sure if thats high praise or a neg. Either way I would drink it again. Maybe ageable for 1 or 2 years. The buckwheat might show up more with time which could be good.

I can't believe I didn't rate this one when I had it, unfortunately my notes have no date on when I tried this one, but here is what my notes say on it...
Pours a cloudy hazy amberish brown color, with a super thick off white khaki head. Smells very malty with a hint of hoppy sweetness. Initial taste - malt bomb but very pleasant balanced finish with aftertaste slightly bitter and sweet. low carbonation definitely unlike anything else, probably thanks to the buckwheat! good boo goop!

Appearance: deep orange hinting towards red. almost opaque but just barely able to see through when held to the light. bubbly off white head that leaves a lacing behind
Smell: figs and dark fruit along with a strong wheat backbone. quite a bit of strength to the smell but not quite alcohol
Taste: opens up with figs that mix with the wheat that consists of most of the beer. ends with a strong hoppiness and slight alcohol bite
Mouthfeel: fairly light and wheaty. ends with a bit of bitterness from hops and alcohol
Overall: a fairly good but overall disappointing beer. Three floyds is talked up a lot and this one let me down a little especially for the steep price tag
Serving type: on-tap
