Opened around a campfire at a tasting. Its murky, but I cant make too much comment on color based n the yellow firelight.

Smells earthy, spicy, hoppy, herbal. Very sweet, spicy, earthy, like dirt and compost with an assertive bitterness. I'm not digging the flavor, it seems the spicy hops and buckwheat make it almost savory- read Not good.

Higly carbed, a nice head on the little tasting glass. Mouthfeel is top notch, thick and malty with a prickly carbonation. Overall- a well crafted beer that tastes bad. I'm sure its exactly what the brewer wanted, and its not for me.

Poured into a tulip glass a murky deep orange with a large blooming off white head that left multiple broken rings of glob as it settled into a frothy mass.Deep resiny hops in the nose along with brown sugar notes,some sweet alcohol really comes in as the beer warms.Warming alochol,honey-like sweetness, and powerful resiny hops on the palate,it's on the sweeter side but the hops bring great balance in the finish.This is a sipper the alcohol is very prevelent but wheatwines are made to be sippers,a great beer.

Thanks to Mike for bringing this one - always willing to try something from Three Floyds. Boogoop comes out of the bottle looking slightly copper with a swampy, brown-ish hue to it. Translucent, topped with a half-inch head that's off-white in color and pretty quick to recede. No real lacing left behind, though that's not too shocking for a 10%+ ABV wheatwine.

Aroma is VERY buckwheat heavy. I haven't had much buckwheat in my life, aside from in pancakes and such, but its aroma is very noticeable and very easy to recognize - very dry and grainy. Booze is apparent but isn't too hot or off-putting. A nice bouquet joins the aromatics about halfway through; perfume, roses, flowers, leaves - smells more like a forest or a handful of grass rather than actual hops.

And not so far from the aroma, the flavor is so, so heavy on the buckwheat. Extremely dry, grainy, and borderline abrasive. The floral hops are noticeable from the start - flowery and grassy in all their glory - but unfortunately they get buried by the robustness of the buckwheat. The booze starts off mild, but starts to open up with time and by the end, you're definitely getting a little bit of heat.

Caramel malts and some sugary sweetness from the malt help to balance the beer, but sadly there isn't much hope. The buckwheat and the booze are too heavy to be balanced properly, which is a shame, because some of the flavors from the malts would probably be quite nice. Pretty thick body with a sticky, almost syrup-like mouth feel, low carbonation.

Well, I'm glad to say I got to try this one, but it fell awfully flat for me. If you're a dedicated lover of buckwheat, then you'll surely love this beer. But it was quite overpowering and heavy, and the dryness from it was a bit too intense to be consistently enjoyable. Not awful or undrinkable, but not something I'd care to try again. Either way, big thanks to Mike for cracking it open.

A - Pours a hazy orange/caramel with more than three fingers of light brown head. Head has excellent retention and leaves rings of lacing down the glass.

S - Very hoppy aroma, mostly grapefruit, but some pine. Lots of toasted grain, with some caramel, toffee and quite a bit of booze.

T - Similar to smell though the taste has even more grain than the aroma. Again, lots of grapefruit hops with some pine. Caramel malt takes a back seat to the hops and grain. Leaves a lingering bitter aftertaste and is reminiscent of a DIPA.

M, Medium-full mouthfeel finishes dry and bitter some numbing alcohol.

T - I don't normally like really hoppy barleywines/wheatwines, but I think the hops are necessary here to counter the heavy tosted grain character. Because of that, I'm not sure how this one will age. It is pretty tasty, and I'm glad I had it, but I doubt I'll think about this again.

On tap at The Common Table after the Jester King/Mikkeller beer dinner.

The beer pours an orange-amber color with a white head. The aroma has a lot of biscuit malt, as well as a lot of orange citrus notes from the hops and some sugary notes.

The flavor is a nice mix of caramel malt and honey, as well some some orange citrus and pine notes from the hops. There is also the same sugary sweetness that I got in the aroma. There is also some alcohol present but the beer is still easy to drink. Overall, I think the beer tastes like a bigger version of Alpha King, with the same hop profile that I get in a lot of the Three Floyds beers.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Glad I got to try this one, which I found to be very good.

12oz glass at Underground Edmonton, a sneak preview of their Mikkeller (and friends, evidently) tap takeover starting this Thursday.

This beer appears a hazy, murky dark apricot brown colour, with one fat finger of bubbly, thickly foamy, and fairly creamy beige head, which leaves some nice pockmarked stoneface lace around the glass as slowly ebbs away.

It smells of sweet caramel and wheat malt, an indistinct graininess, a slightly musty yeastiness, muddled orchard and tropical fruit, floral, leafy hops, and a simmering booze warming. The taste is very barleywine-esque up front - big, bulging caramel/toffee malt, subtly aided here by some beefed-up wheat malt, one rather bereft of any usual edge or crispness, a musty, dusty, old cellar dankness, lingering brewer's yeast, and subdued leafy, floral, and somewhat citrusy hops. The big ABV does well to keep its distance.

The bubbles are actually active, but keep their head down while they go about their duty, the body a sturdy medium-heavy weight, and generally quite smooth, the only thing threatening ingress being the quivering alcohol. It finishes sweet, duh, the caramel and sugar wheat cereal pops fullness having little trouble with the latent fruity hops, while the booze still seems capable of minding it own manners.

Probably the tastiest wheatwine (sorry, Half Pints!) I've come across, and yes, it's mostly because of the barley wine proximity, but also due to the alcohol integration, and maybe the agreeable hop balance. Lots going on here, but at the same time, it really seems quite simple. Glad to have gotten a go at this one - thank you John from Soltice.

As stated above, this really should be listed as a Mikkeller beer, not Three Floyds, as it was brewed on Mikkeller's side of the ocean. Regardless, what lover of great beer could resist a collaboration between these two beer artists? Aging my ass, this is getting opened NOW.

The opaque, clouded-over rust color is nice, and the superbly creamy, firm dirty-white head is even nicer, leaving splashes and splats of lace all over the glass.

This is one of those aromas that leaps out of the glass and flies straight into the nostrils from several feet away. Enormously flowery/green/pungent/piney/citrusy hops lead the way, all big and bright, with a malty lower level that reminds of rye, spicy and super-earthy as it is.

Holy cow, this beer has it all going on. Initially there's a slight shock of prickly spices (cinnamon comes to mind/tongue), again reminding of rye, but clearly it's buckwheat (as printed on the label). While the hops scream Double IPA, there's a malty character here that strikes a sweet, vanilla-kissed balance between the barleywine and wheatwine poles. Hops are hugely herbal and resiny/piny, not as much citrus/fruit as suggested in the aroma. Caramel tones, burnt toffee-like tones, charred red apple skin, and that "je ne sais quoi" of the best "American Strong Ales" that puts in on a level with the almighty Double Bastard. And about that 10.4%, it's excellently incorporated, just one part of the greater sum, never brash or overdone.

Texture/feel is also utter perfection, in terms of texture/feel. Slick, creamy, full, a bit sticky, superbly round and, again, creamy (!!), it's just right for the flavor. You want to keep the beer in your mouth forever not only because of how it tastes, but also how pleasurable it feels. Like a room temperature vanilla ice cream and 7-Up float that has merged into a velvety soup.

Boogoop is one of the best beers I've had in recent memory, and really one of the best beers EVER. It's also yet another example of why bigger beers should be drunk at higher temps. At the right spot, like mid/high 50s Fahrenheit, this nears being not just great but transcendental. What a treat. Daaayaaamn.

Hits the style. A strong ale of piney citrus grapefruit hops with a large floating mass of grain. Very hoppy, which raised the interest. Good drinkability, above average mouthfeel, suitably carbonated. Cloudy light brown coloured body, with large retained head. Surprisingly fresh aromas.A good find in Maine last August.
Further sample at Bar Volo, fresh. Good hoppy wheatwine.

Big frothy offwhite head and a ruby-amber body. Lots of lace.

Nose is full of citrusy American hops. Almost Pine-Sol.

Magnificent taste-- the hops are amply balanced by light fruit character, apple, maybe pear and white grape, and lots of honey. The buckwheat (I think it's that, it tastes kinda like a grain) also serves to balance. Slight alcohol burn with the fruit on the first aftertaste, and the hops return for a second aftertaste. Interesting.

Mouthfeel is rich and thick.

I'll be upfront. I don't like hoppy beers. This one, however, is an outstanding exception. Well balanced yet incredibly bold in terms of flavor presence.

A - Cloudy orange pour with a white fizzy head. Decent lacing. Some carbonation is visible.

S - Scent of caramel malt, some citrus notes, and a bit of dry sherry. Has a boozy smell as it warms.

T - Strong malt flavor with a bite of sharp berries. Finish has a potent bite. Very sweet component to this.

M - Strong sipper that really goes well after a meal. I was glas to split the bottle with a few friends. This is not a style that I'd like to have too much of.

O - Enjoyable collaboration and well worth trying.

I had this on tap at the brewpub.

A - Copper,amber with a nice white head that didn't linger for more than just a few minutes. This thing has great legs as well.

S - Malty and sugary. Very little hop character.

T - Mostly malty, with some honey. It has a definite wine character to it. There was little hoppiness, but I did taste the slightest amount of grapefruit bitterness on the finish.

M - Quite viscous. It goes down like honey butter.

O - I really enjoyed this. Rich and malty with a wine like character. Nothing to powerful, but definitely a very enjoyable sipper. The alcohol crept up on me. Yah. Nice. It's different enough from a traditional barleywine to be considered "not normal". That's what the Floyds do best.

A: Tawny brown with a huge frothy head and great lacing

S: Lots of booze; grainy--lots of wheat characteristics; pretty hoppy too with lots of grassy, herbal, and citrus hop characteristics; this is boozy and grainy and grassy with just a touch of that cat-pee, dank aroma that comes out in some heavily hopped beers--but in a good way, I promise

T: Man, this is grainy and grassy and boozy; the alcohol is strong but it plays so well off the citrus flavors from the hops and the grainy, herbal, grassy malts

F: A touch thin but a medium finish and sticky, oily texture makes up for the somewhat thin beginning

O: This is a tasty, boozy beer; so grainy and malty and hoppy and boozy and mmm

Poured from a bomber into an oversized wine glass. Poured a hazy amber color with a one finger head even in this glass. Head goes away in a minute or two but retains some little heaps of bubbles.

The smell is fantastic- hoppy and fresh, there's no hint of alcohol which is surprising in a barleywine (hence the 5, keeping style in mind). Also a nice mild wheat smell.

Tastes is clean and crisp- very nice round wheat flavor. I've never head a wheat beer whose flavor I've really enjoyed but I sure like this one. Hops are piney and well balanced. NIce dry finish.

Mouthfeel is excellent- full bodied and yet well carbonated. I feel a lot of barleywines (wheat?) are too syrupy and not lively enough, again why I gave this beer a 5.

Great beer- if you see it, get it.

750 mL bottle poured into a CCB snifter. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Deep orange body with a nice off-white head. Sticky lacing.

Smell - Citrusy hops. Nice sweetness, but not overpowering. Fascinating smell, but I don't know what buckwheat smells like. I had some buckwheat pancakes once, but that's not enough for me to identify it readily.

Taste - Great citrus hop flavor. Expected from Three Floyds. Barely any sweetness, but it's different. Slightly spicy, but different from rye. Moderate bitter finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium-heavy body. Not an IPA. Good slick feel with nice carbonation.

Overall - Really nice. Hoppy as hell. The malt flavor is interesting enough to keep me from getting bored with it. A nice change from a standard wheat/barleywine.

Pours a translucent amber color with phenomenal contrast to a yellowish head. The head is spectacular and, when poured into a tulip with a slightly aggressive pour, stands almost as high as the body of the beer. It looks like a sponge sitting on top of the beer. The lacing is one of the best I've seen.

Smells of citrus and earthy hops, caramel, and a bit of bubble gum.

It's hop forward and sweet with tutti-fruiti. Citrus, earthy, and piney hops with a heavy dosage of caramel and honey.

Mouthfeel is moderate carbonation and a somewhat heavy body.

I was very pleased with this beer. Heavy on the hops with a solid sweet backbone. It is a little pricey, to the point I wouldn't buy a bottle again, but definitely no buyer's remorse for taking the plunge.

Pours a slightly hazy deep golden color, almost amber. The head is dense that left sticky webby lacing on the glass.

The aroma is hoppy with citrus notes. A good mix of grapefruit and orange notes. There is some estery notes from the yeast, a tad musty.

The hop profile is a mix of grapefruit, grass, and pine notes. Some floral honey notes in the malt. Again, there is a little something from the yeast. The wheat malt adds some body but not much flavor.

Moderate body, nice balance between sweet malt and grassy hop bitterness. It does finish slightly bitter.

A nice hoppy beer nothing fantastic

The brew poured with a ton of foam and a lively spirit. The edges were bright orange but the color settled into an amber center.

The aromas were full of dried fruit but chocolate, licorice and even a little smoke could be found.

The flavor says straight barley wine to me with no wheat characteristics that I can tell. Fudge brownie with a ton of barley malt flavor caps off a full flavor.

The ending feel to this was my only disappointment as it had a twangy tanginess. Otherwise the feel seemed appropriate.

750ml. Picked up at the Charleston Beer xchange. Bright amber pour, layer of off white head. Laces a little.

Aroma, the standard piney 3F character. Some herbal graininess. Toffee.

Taste, a bit harsh. Hops, they're all there, piney, herbal, lighter citrus. There's a grainy spice, with the hope and higher carb cause the harshness for me. There is a nice bready/fruitcake malt body. Finishes with toasted malt and pretty bitter pine/anise. If you've killed your buds maybe this isn't that bitter, for me not quite doing it.

Body right of mid. Carbonation makes the drinkabity higher, but makes it much less enjoyable also. A one and done for me, but maybe worth trying. Price though, is not low.

This did improve all around as it warmed.

A: The wheatwine is a big murky amber color, rusty but hazed over. An off-white head, more tan than not, is thin and doesn't linger.

S: That's a wheatwine. The nose is big and abrasive, excessive wheat to the point of thickness. The hops, citrusy, are equally powerful. As the ale warms, the hops strengthen. Caramel, wheat, and hops, all in more-than-ample proportions.

T: Fruits and hops, and plenty of breads. The wheatwine body is a wall of concentrated fruits, dark and sharp. The hops add citrus, a grapefruit dose that gets stronger as the ale gets warmer. The wheatwine strsses the wine side, boozy and hot; you can feel the strength after even 1/2 of a glass. The richness seems best for colder weather and the hops have lost a bit of the edge (as compared to a pour from a bottle last month). Formidable though, a filling beer.

M: Like most wheawines, strength and the wall of maltiness are hallmarks. The hops need a bit of time and don't have the same pow though.

Pours hazy dark amber with a large, fading head.
Lots of malt in the aroma, with caramel, toffee and golden syrup all showing alongside some spicy, bready malt. In the way of hops there's resinous, spicy characters. Tempting.
The malty aroma is perfectly mirror in the flavours. What's different is the booze and hops. There's a stronger piny, spicy hop presence including an aggressive bitterness in the finish, while the alcohol presents itself noticeably but remains clean.
Body is perfectly syrupy.

On tap at Map Room's 19th anniversary party.

Served in a tulip, bright saturated orange tone, with a compact layer of white foam on the surface. Drippy lave all around the glass. Lasting retention.

Unique hop aroma, slightly woody and earthy, reminds me of sorachi ace a little bit. Flavors of rich caramel and resiny crushed hop cones.. Smooth feel, sweet and sticky on the lips. Medium bodied with a long bitter aftertaste. Overall pretty hop forward, as much of FFF's output is. Better than past goops, at least those in recent memory.

750 ml bottle. Served in a snifter, the beer pours an orange/copper color with about an inch light tan head that stays around for a while. There's also a good amount of lacing. The brew smells like pine hops, caramel malt, citrusy hops (tropical fruit, orange peel), toffee and some candied fruit. The taste is mostly like the aroma, but there's also some spicy hop flavors noticeable. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's a bit creamy and has moderate carbonation. There's also a bit of alcohol heat, but not enough to hurt the beer. I think this is a good brew overall, it's definitely worth trying.

Appearance. Pours a hazy, deep orange-amber with a great 2 finger, thick pale yellow head.

Smell. Citrus fruits, floral hops, some toasty light grains

Taste. Citrus fruits and rinds, some cherry and berries, toasted wheat, piney hops, and a little bubble gum.

Mouthfeel. Fairly full bodied with medium-low carbonation.

Overall. Fantastic wheatwine. Love the hops in this one.

Bottle: Poured a deep dirty medium brown color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and some light lacing. Aroma of deep caramelized grain notes with some dry and somewhat grassy hops is quite unique. Taste is dominated by deep caramelized buckwheat malt with strong grainy notes which are somewhat unique offset by some dry and lightly grassy hops notes. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Interesting too try a beer with so much buckwheat malt and a strange but enjoyable mix with hops.

Bottle to Bruery tulip.

A - Medium to dark amber colour. Two fingers of thick, creamy off-white head formed and slowly receded to one finger width with good retention and moderate lacing.

S - A mix of sweet malt and bitter hop aromas up front. A fairly prominent hop profile provides grassy, herbal and lighter citrus aromas. The malt bill compliments those aromas with cereal/bready qualities and caramel.

T - Very generous hopping is noticed up front with big grassy, herbal and citrus flavours. The citrus is far more prominent than the nose suggested. There is some pine evident as well. The malt bill balance out the bold hop profile adding sweet caramel, candy, some spiciness and light toffee notes. More flavours seem to present themselves with every sip - including some pineapple and orange peel flavours which also accentuate the citrus flavours that were already present.

M - Medium body, creamy. Light to moderate carbonation.

O - It seems like almost everything that FFF touches appeals to me. This is no exception. A well made beer.
