thanks to my bud Epseja (below with cute super K avatar) for hooking a brother up, well, his brother who lives out by 3Fs hooked up his brother who hooked me up but I am not actually his brother, maybe a brother from another mother but that is another other subject... man my head hurts reading that...
with most non super dark 3F products I like to sample them ASAP as they tend to lose a touch in the hops dept if they are not fresh (see: gumballhead)
no .. grr... freshness.. grr.. date... grrr
pours nice and thick with a moderate head (one finger) of the darker tan variety... like whitney houston... nice cling on the glass, it jiggles like gelatin when I ping the glass (hey, I felt like pinging the f'n glass.. alright?). light has a hard time passing through this one. the bubbles are tight and small like a.. nah, that comment will get me in trouble.. the bubbles in the head on the surface of the beer pack tightly like guiness true.. but not as uniform, but then again this doesn't have the benefit of nitro so I am not going to slag it on that basis. there is one big bubble in the middle kind of looking at me cross.. I think it wants to make me it's bitch, but I'm not in prison.. so you know...
anyway, I am finding th lacing to be great on this, it is sticking to the top of the rim on all sides with no breaks in the bubble sheet. a good looking brew.
smoked hops. any question? I was almost expecting the usual 3Fs assault (no complaints about that, I friggin love it usually)... but no, this is more like tasting an american porter imo. there is an underlying sweetness that almost says milk stout also.. sure, the amarillo seem like they are in there but grapefruits dipped in cocoa? can it work? strange... but not off putting. granted it sounds like I am describing alot in the nose but it is not a strong nose, you really have to work to get the depth. is that good or bad? I am also getting some prune notes in there also.. along with subtle vanilla. damn, every time I sniff it I get something different, the mark of a great one.. the subtle smoke really just adds a dimension to this that is outstanding... impressive.
creamy mouthfeel initially and really burnt flavor is immediate. I really think thistastes like it is in the wrong category.. I have been sucking on a lot of american porters lately and this really would line up right with them. the burnt taste is upfront on the front/middle of the tongue and gives way to bitter chocolate in the finish on the back rear of the mouth, superb. the carbonation is sublime, it actually hides the fact that this is a bit thin actually, very sly. the hops add just the right amount of bitterness inbetween the burnt blast and deep chocolate notes (with hints of sweetness). the burps from this one are all hops incidentally... which I found wierd! This finishes dry with each sip really wanting you to have more... a joy in the mouth by the sip or the swig, awesome!
like wearing sweatpants to high school... sometimes you just can't get up. this beer is fantastic. not all 3Fs blow me away.. but when they do.. they just slay me. this is killer, I wish this was available locally here, fantastic. Seek this one out, I sure as hell will.

A: Appears to be very dark brown, if not black, in the glass, but holding it up to the light reveals it to be a bit thin and translucent. Forms a moderate sized deep tan colored head, but the beer offers little retention. Light lacing.
S: Aroma is mostly roasted malts, coffee, and cocoa with a mix of citrus and piney hops.
T: Taste starts of with mostly roasted malts and milk chocolate, then it thins out. Lighter notes of coffee and citrus hops. Maybe a slight hint of smoke.
M: Medium bodied. Lower carbonation. Mild bitterness.
O: A decent stout. A bit hoppy for the style, but that is to be expected with FFF.
