A special rye beer brewed in collaboration with our friends at Reckless Records. Brewed with American 2-row barley & rye medium bodied ale has a sweet caramel biscuit body and a deep golden color. A special blend of hops gives this rye ale an aroma of resiny tangerines & blood fruit. Cheer!

Apparently Reckless Records have a thing for bitterness, spiciness, earthy tones, and rustic charm. Because their Three Floyds collaboration does just that.

This strong and earthy ale gives a rusty bronze hue, softly back lit wit a gentle night-light glow. The fluffy and liquefied head shows stubborn staying power and laces with broken islands of foam that provide an artistic and random display.

Largely perfumey with an aromatic bouquet of fragrant orange blossom, sweet red grapefruit, the zest of tangerine, pulp of mango, and a soft sprucy scent that weaves together with impressions of spice, crust, and pepper, and grain- both rustic and delicate all at the same time.

Light sweetness of the most terse caramel possible with other hearty sweetnesses of crusted breads, earthen rye, dull peppercorn, grain and honey quickly face and pave the way for a mid palate of hop character to charge ahead. Vibrant orange pulp and zest, ruby red grapefruit juice, pine, mangoes and apricots allow for a highly juicy and dry taste all at the same time. Finishing cleanly bitter with resiny hop character and that of citrus pith, only the earthen spice of rye stands in the way with complexity and dirty affair.

Creamy and light bodied, the malty meringue of carbonation and fruit gives an almost-medium feel except for the grain spice (without any astringency), the alcoholic minty warmth, and dying sweetness allows the beer to snap close with confidence and awakening.

Rye and hops come together like this- somewhat embattled conflict yet seamless accompaniment.... aah, folks- this is where complexity is made at its highest level. And where are the grain derived astringency? Where is the earthy distraction? Where are the unresolved malty sweetness? Nowhere!

Bottle from the brewery, 650ml into a tulip.

Clear orange body with a couple fingers of white head. Good retention and lacing. Nose had a whole load of citrus, peach and tangerine, some resin and dank notes. Solid malt base, and the rye is quite present, a hint of spice. Some candy notes as well. Tastes takes it up a notch, full bodied, chewy and hoppy. Loads more citrus and resin. Light breadiness, and the rye shines again. Light spiciness to accent the hops in the best way. Great feel, moderate bitterness and medium carbonation. Just another rye based IPA that does it all right.

Bomber from the brewery, review based on notes

A - Light orange with one finger white head recedes quickly, colour is beautiful.

S - In your face fruitiness, smells up the room upon cracking the bottle. Peach, apricot tangerines and citrus.

T -Perfect balance of fruity juicy hops and biscuity malt really well balanced.

M - really light, easy drinking slightly heavy on the carbonation.

O - One of my favourite beers from 3 Floyds, easily drank a bomber and was wanting more! Really great and highly recommended.

22oz bottle, shared with a friend. Pours a golden-copper color with a frothy, off-white head, decent retention and lace. Aromas fill the nose with a floral hop bouquet of citric grapefruit, orange, and pine. Tastes are juicy grapefruit, peppery rye, biscuity malt, floral hops, faint caramel and pine. Well balanced and refreshing. Light-to-medium bodied, good carbonation. Overall, nice refreshing rye ale with an amazing floral hop aroma. Nice treat!

S - Citrus-tangerine and orange, malty-carmel and bread.

T - Oranges, citrus, bread.

D - Tons of carbonation and a medium body.

delicious beer and highly recommended.
great fruity-hoppy balance to a mild grainy-flavor from the rye.
very drink-able, and great (rye) ale flavor.
And i understand its a limited edition batch so I'm excited to have gotten a chance to try it, even out here in Boston!

From a bomber poured into a duvel tulip. Pours a clear orange copper with an inch of off white head that shrinks with nice lacing. Aroma is tangerine, pine resin, grapefruit, apricot, and rye. Flavor follows aroma. Blood fruit, tangerine, grapefruit, some tropical fruit, and a rye based malty backbone. Thin to medium mouthfeel. Very good.

I had this multiple times at DLD on-tap, and then again out of the bottle. Served in a Hill Farmstead glass.

A - Off-white foam settles to wisps, thick collar, and a few spots of lace. Transparent copper body.

S - Rye, zesty citrus, earthy hops, and some sweeter tangerine notes that comes out as the beer warms up. There's a hint of cattiness as well. Other than the rye there isn't a ton of malt character.

T - Taste is similar, with citrus, sugary malts, nice rye zest, a hint of herbal flavor, and moderate finishing bitterness. Nice depth, balance, and intensity.

M - Medium body, moderate carbonation, super dry, with a resinous enamel-coating finish.

D - This stuff is great. I hope they make it regularly, as it's too good to be a mere one-off. Chris and I easily crushed a bomber, and I suspect either of us would have been happy to do so on our own.

a: translucent copper. three finger head

s: citrus. caramel. getting a bit of honey as well. not much of the rye.

t: citrusy (esp grapefruit) hops. more rye presence here than in the aroma - peppery finish

m: medium body. clean finish.

o: I've seen references to this as Zombie Dust with rye and I think it's a good quick description. Very tasty.

22 oz bottle poured into a Half Acre tulip.

A- pours a nice copper with a 2 finger off- white head. Some small blotches and tear drops of lacing.

S- sweet caramel, huge citrus nose (grapefruit, orange, pineapple) and some spiciness from the rye.

T- sweet orange and grapefruit along with some caramel. Citrus rind and rye come in mid and late palate. Perfectly amount of bitterness.

M- medium body and carbonation. Slightly dry and effervescent.

O- awesome beer! More ipa than rye, but the rye plays perfectly with the citrus and bitterness. I think I will have to stop at 3 Floyds soon and pick up some more.

Big thanks to Chris for sharing this one.

Pours a clear orange with a thin white head and decent lacing. Smell is really quite good - a fantastic citrusy aroma (Nelson hops?) really takes over and hits you in the face in a great way. Taste follows the nose - it's a huge citrusy hops flavor while not being too bitter, which makes it very easy to drink. The rye isn't as prevalent as I had hoped, but still hides in the background. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, maybe a little sticky, which some nice carbonation. Overall, this is a great beer, not quite up to the level of Zombie Dust, but actually quite similar and damn good.

Pours a crystal clear copper with a finger off white head. Fluffy and pillow like with great retention.

Smells like a Lagunitas beer too me. Bright citrusy hops, reisouny, oily hop aromas covering up most of the malt and leaving only a ester of the rye spiciness.

Rye comes out more in the mouth. A bit thin big bright citrusy hops, hints of toffee, very clean on the palate with brisk carbonation. Not overly complex but easy drinking and quaffable. Some tropical fruit as well.

Bomber with a whacky label poured into a tulip. Thanks Dan (dvelcich).

Clear amber colored beer with a very good head and retention. Kickass lacing. Great tropical fruit aroma typical of FFF with some piney notes. Crisp and bursting with great hop flavor, some bitterness, some sweetness and a hint of rye at the end. Medium finish and a faint lingering bitterness. Very easy drinking and very good.

The legendary aasher sent this beer to me. In fact, it arrived today and I simply couldn't wait to open it. Cheers and thanks again, Al!

Brilliantly clear, medium orange color. Airy, off-white foam formation was large, leaves some sticky lacing behind and is retaining well. Great looking beer.

Citrus fruity hops greet the nose first. Also picking up some resiny pine. Malt seems mostly clean but I did get a whiff of spiciness.

Again fruity hops taking front stage but followed quickly by a firm malt backbone that shows off a tinge of dark toasty bread. Very slight smoky note in the background seems unusual for an APA. Bitterness is moderately high and continues to linger long in the dry finish.

Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Smooth.

Showcasing a great hop character but with ample malt support, Rye'd Da Lightning is certainly a tasty beer. As an American Pale Ale it has a malt flavor or two that might be considered out of style but none the less, definitely a beer I'd love a second (or third or…) pint of. Tasty stuff here, thanks again Al for sending it!

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a 20 oz. nonic pint glass

Pours a deep gold with orange hues and a clean white two finger head. Aroma of citrus with an undertone of pine. Grapefruit greets your taste buds upfront transitioning into a bit of pine and finishes with dry rye spicyness. Well carbonated with a slick medium body. A very balanced brew. Those that appreciate a drier pale ale will especially enjoy this brew.

On tap at Dark Lord Day 2012. Several pours from a plastic cup into a mini snifter. Pours a clear golden color with a nice white head. Good retention and plenty of sticky lacing on the way down. The nose carries a hefty amount of citrus along with some light tropical fruits and a bit of a floral character. Rye spice lingers in the background. Touch of earth makes its way through into the flavor. Great combination of rye and hops. Body is light and fairly-crisp with a solid hop bitterness. Huge fan of this one.

Poured from bomber into dimpled glass mug. Pours burnt orange and deep golden with thin but nice-lasting white head that lasted well throughout. Aromas of rye, wheat, resiny tangerines, blood fruit, biscuit, and sweet wet hops. Flavors of sweet caramel, wheat, hops, and a somewhat bitter back finish. Medium bodied. Overall, a nice rye beer with some complex characters underneath.

Thanks, Florida9 for grabbing me one of these at DLD.

Golden orange body, about the color of apple juice. It's clear and has an average white head.

Aromatic grapefruit and tangerine hops with a hint of biscuit malt.

Grapefruit, tangerine, light malt, and nice peppery finish.

Fresh and clean mouthfeel with moderate carbonation.

A damn good rye pa. The peppery rye and citrus go well together.

As a fan of the style & the brewery, i had to find this one asap! Poured 22 oz bottle into Duvel tulip.

This guy pours the color of orange cough syryp: nice, deep amber. Gorgeous, creamy head that retains for a while. Great snowcap lacing, and plenty of stickiness to the sides of the glass. Crown jewel of this brew is the smell: super hoppy nose, with a hint of rye spiciness. Strong citrus presence here, too: orange/tangerine.

Down the hatch! To me this tastes quite similar to Zombie, with a bit more of a bitter finish. Honestly: so many 3F brews taste so similar to me, which is not a bad thing. Not quite as pronounced of a rye presence as Founders or 2 Brothers version.

Overall: great brew, just lacking a touch for the style. Had I not known this was a rye beer, would likely rank a bit higher. Another winner from 3F!

A - Pours a clear light copper with almost two fingers of white head. Head has good retention and leaves some spotty lacing. A small stream of carbonation rises slowly in the middle of the glass.

S - Nice big citrus aroma, with orange, some grapefruit zest and some subtle sweet malts.

T - Hops and malts are pretty evenly matched here. Definitely not an APA posing as an IPA, but still a nice hop presence, especially on the initial taste and with some lingering bitterness on the finish. Rye brings a nice subtle spiciness to the taste. Similar to smell, the hops are very citrusy.

M - Medium mouthfeel is very smooth, and finishes clean and dry with some bitterness.

O - Very enjoyable APA. Crisp and clean with a nice complement of malt. For the price point, I would still take Red's Rye to get my rye fix, though the hop profile here is very nice. If this made it into the FFF year-round six-pack line up, I could see this being a regular purchase.

22 oz bomber I picked up at DLD 2012, no bottled on date, poured into a tulip glass.

A- Pours a clear orange color, topped with a couple fingers of white head, good retention, leaves tons of crusty lacing.

S- Nice juicy citrus aroma, grapefruit and orange, some biscuity pale malt.

T- More fruity hops, grapefruit, tangerines and blood oranges, spicy, peppery rye, bitter grassy finish.

M- Medium-bodied, smooth feel.

O- A really tasty pale ale, rye and fruit flavors are awesome.

A: clear copper in color. Forms a thin off white head that is fairly stable. Some light lacing.

S: aromatic. Full of citrus with lots of grapefruit and orange with hints of tropical fruit and mango.

T: Zesty grapefruit with notes of orange. Some mild caramel malts and rye create a peppery base that accents the citrus hops nicely. Clean finish. Very mild bitterness.

M: on the lighter side of medium. Good carbonation. Very mild bitterness

O: A very nice easy drinking beer. Like the citrus character (reminiscent of Citra) with the peppery quality. Almost like a rye Zombie Dust.

I picked up a few of these this past weekend at Three Floyds.

This beer pours a light bodied bright bronze in clor with a two finger, very soapy white head. The nose is compromised of citrusy, and I swear some Citra, hops with a nice slightly sweet malt backbone. It's hoppy without being Alpha King or Zombie Dust aggressive. The flavors are very well integrated. It is an off dry, citrusy and has a touch of pine as well as fresh soap. There is also a touch of rye spice. It drinks very smoothly and is light in body and very drinkable. For some reason I didn't really expect a beer like this but this one is really impressive. It has the Three Floyd's mark all over it. I'd recommend grabbing this while they still have some left at the brewpub.

Purchased from FFF at DLD. Had some there, but only after the palate was wrecked.

Pours deep orange with a 2 finger white head with excellent retention and lacing. Picture perfect beer.

GIANT citrus aroma with some excellent grapefruit (my personal favorite smell in an IPA) along with some rye spiciness with just a hint of sweetness.

Tastes like a IPA with rye added. Bright citrus notes again mostly featuring grapefruit. Just a touch of malt sweetness before finishing with a good spicy kick from the rye, but intertwined with piney bitterness.

A tad bit sticky with good carbonation.

Wow this beer is almost flawless and not quite like anything I've ever had before. Bravo FFF for making yet another amazingly hopped up masterpiece. It's akin to Zombie Dust with some rye. I hope they make this a regular offering.
