Thanks to Momar42 for the bottle share! Part of a 22 oz bottle poured into a Duvel artist tulip. Notes from last night's Skins/Cowboys game.
A: Pours a hazy copper color. The head is a one finger white color with unimpressive retention.
S: There's a really nice tropical fruit profile from the hops - which I've now come to expect from FFF. In particular, it's melon, grapefruit, and cantaloupe that I notice aromatically. There's a lot of rye malts that come through in this one.
T: The first thing that hits the palate is mango, melon, and grapefruit hop flavors. Rye comes through strongly afterwards, and some slight herbal piny hops in the finish almost gives off an onion/garlic vibe when backed up with the rye flavors. A bit on the rough side - both in texture and flavor.
M: Like I said, a little rough and heavily textured. It's not really dry per se, but the tingly coarseness doesn't mesh well with the slick, lingering finish. Low carbonation seemingly makes the texture come across as being thicker than it is.
O: I'm totally blaming palate fatigue as to why I only think this is just good. Going from a quartet of sours, a cucumber beer, a sweet vanilla/coffee porter, and freakin' BCBCS to a rye pale ale isn't the smoothest transition - but this beer still came off as a little rough. I'd love to try it again, though, because this was apparently an old bottle.
