Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a small dark brown foamy head with OK retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry roasted malt with quite a bit of residual sugar with some chili’s notes coming through. Taste is quite heavy with loads of dry roasted malt with some strong spicy chili’s notes that offset most of the residual sugars and barrel treatment. Body is full with medium carbonation and alcohol is totally hidden by the chili notes. Interesting experiment but I would like the head to be dropped a bit too increase drinkability.

Bomber from the end of year Ottawa Tasting

Appearance - Dark brown colour with a small size frothy brown head. I can't make out the amount of carbonation showing and there is some great lacing. The head lasted for around 5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, chocolate, coffee, peppers

Taste & Mouth - There is a below average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, rich chocolate, and vanilla. There is also some coffee and a whack of spicy/peppery notes.

Overall - I am not a fan of chilli beers to begin with. This was on of the better ones I've had though. Perhaps because the other flavours in the beer are big and bold enough to compete with the peppers.

750ml bottle poured into FFF teku. Consumed during our chili beer tasting alongside Bourbon Muerte DL, Mexican Cake variants, BA Abraxas, and BA Hunahpu. Split 5 ways.

A- Pours a pitch black, pretty much no head to speak of, can definitely tell the high abv due to streaky alcohol legs.

S- Dark chocolate, fairly strong presence of chili peppers that come off as fairly raw with a vegetal presence, some light cognac barrel presence. Out of all chili stouts we had this probably had the most chili presence coming through, unlike the others though it was fairly vegetal smelling which cut some of the sweetness and made it not quite as appealing. Overall not bad though.

T- Dark chocolate, coffee Werther's hard candy, vegetal chili peppers, finishes with some cognac coming through along with a bit more chili pepper heat, dark chocolate, and black licorice. Chili peppers linger on the palate for awhile afterwards, much more so then the chili peppers of any of the other beers. Fairly flavorful, complex, chilies hide a bit of the sweetness from regular Dark Lord but still remains fairly sweet.

M- Alcohol very well hidden, low carbonation but fitting for the high abv, peppers burn a little bit.

O- Cognac de Muerte Dark Lord was definitely an interesting beer that was enjoyable to try, however it didn't quit stack up to the other big chili stouts that we tried and I probably wouldn't pay $50 for a bottle to try it again. The beer wasn't as balanced as the others and the chilies didn't integrate as well into the beer having a much more noticeable vegetal presence that detracted from the beer slightly. Worth trying but I probably wouldn't give up the cellar, especially when '13 Bourbon de Muerte is significantly better.

750ml bottle 15,0% Abv.
Served chilled and split between a snifter and a wine glass.

Thanks to Rfraga for this bottle.

Appearance: As with all the DL varients, Cognac de Muerte pours pitch black and viscous, with a rough pour yielding a thin sliver of dark tan foam that fizzes away almost instantly. A light swirl coats the glass in a sticky yellow-brown residue and heavy alcohol legs.

Smell: Wow, now this is what I call a nose! Big sweet chocolate and dark caramel combine fantastically with a massive, nose tingling chilli character. After a few minutes the nose really opens up, with additional notes of cocoa, hot chocolate powder, dark chocolate fudge, heavy dark fruits, oak, a fair amount of cognac, liquorice and even more crushed chilli character. I can't get over how well the chilli blends in with the sweet chocolaty base beer!
As the beer approaches room temperature, things take a bit of a dip, with a fair amount of soya sauce and an odd meaty (almost marmite) becoming apparent and obscuring the cognac and some of the chocolate.

Taste: The initial flavour is fantastically sweet with big chocolate, caramel and dark fruit notes that are quickly followed by a big hit of chilli spice and crushed chilli flavour. Unfortunately a few more sips reveals some unexpected oxidization just before the chilli heat hits that detracts quite a bit from an otherwise outstanding flavour. Other notes include: Dark caramel, rich chocolate, a little cognac, some vanilla and even more vegetal chilli.
There was no trace of the 15% notes, but any burn would likely be obscured by the big chilli heat in the finish.

Mouthfeel: The body is full, chewy and fantastically sticky, with a medium/low level of smooth carbonation. The chilli heat in the back of the throat is fairly substantial, but doesn't get anywhere near the "too hot" region.

Overall: Cognac de Muerte Dark Lord is a fantastic beer, yes it is hot, but the chilli flavour is perfectly integrated with the rest of the beer. Had it not been for the oxidization in the flavour, this would have easily been one of the best beers I have had this year.
