Behold! The fifth collaborative effort of Three Floyds and Mikkeller. This complex ale is just the beverage for canal boat trips in Copenhagen or the brutal Chicago winter. This year’s offering will be brewed in both Europe and in Chicago. Look for both editions and the subtle differences in each. Cheers and thanks for supporting craft beer.

A - bright orange with a huge, white, frothy head that has good retention

S - citrusy, grapefruit, faintly spicy

T - bread, orange, grapefruit, spicy, earthy, faint sweetness

M - medium bodied, warm, smooth

This is intensely hopped Barleywine. This could fit in with almost any of the DIPAs I've had from FFF so far. I really enjoyed the intense hop character and the subtle malt sweetness. If getting FFF around here wasn't hard, I would definitely have this again.

A- This beer pours a slightly hazy bright orange body with a gentle carbonation of tiny bubbles. There is a sticky antique white head that last and last

S- The blast of beautiful hops almost sting the nose with aromas of pineapple weed and pale green hop flowers that smell just pick of the bine.

T- The mellow creamy note blends to fresh pineapple weed and dandelion flower hop flavors finish to a dry mellow but full pungency that has some nice bitterness as it opens up.

M- This beer has a medium-light crisp texture with all the alcohol hidden somewhere.

O- This beer is lovely with lots of exploding hop aroma/flavor and a good depth to it aswell. There is no real bitterness and alcohol but just enough pungency to offset the floral character of the hops. I don't know where those 22 oz. went.

Poured hazy orange, with about a finger width head that dissipated to a light ring.

Citrus smell up front, almost matching the orang of the color, although mixed with almost a tropical fruit underneath.

Taste is hoppy but not somewhat mellowed. Not much in the way of maltiness. Fairly light and no real alcohol taste in it.

Mouthfeel is light but with a slighty stickiness to it. Smooth and easy to drink.

Overall, a very nice compilation, although it is fairly hard to pin it down in terms of style. Is it a barleywine, is it an IPA, is it rice beer. I guessI can say this: its FFF, its not normal, its good beer, enjoy it.

Aroma of sweat yet a wine taste. A big bubbly head and lots of lace. Gino’s bottle from 3 Floyds visit. A wild yeast strain, with bravo hops I think. Sweet and hoppy. A big mouthfeel, tangerine and grapefruit flavours. Not super drinkable.bee-aye 6600.

Appearance: Puors a thick orange/yellow egg yolk with a thin two finger head that dissipates rapidly to whispy one finger cloudy white head.

Smell: Belgium yeasts and some citrus

Taste: Wow this is nice and crisp and super refreshing beer. I cant believe it is 10.4% I want to drink this on a boat in the sun. Ok, so the taste. Sweet yeasty taste up front with some hops in the end. There are some citrus notes, orange peel, slight lemon peel.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a nice thick lasting finish on the tongue. slight dryness in the very end, most likely from the hops.

Overall: Not sure of the style but this is great. it says rice beer on the label but I thought it was supposed to be a bwine. Anyways, this is a really nice beer that is easy drinking and nice yummy subtle notes that keep it on point. Cheers

It's a beautiful bright orange-gold color that's a great contrast to the stark white head.

It's hoppy as hell with loads of citrus hops in the nose. It has the unmistakable 3F hop profile. Light pine and a slight grainy malt bill.

It's currently listed on BA as a barleywine, but this screams DIPA all the way. Grapefruit and orange hops with a nice bitter mouth puckering effect. It's got a slight fusel spice to the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and I'd like for the carbonation to be dialed back just a little. Still a really good mouthfeel, though.

It's a really good offering that showcases hops, hops, and more hops.

Bottle: Poured a dark blonde color ale with a medium size foamy head with limited retention and some light lacing. Aroma of grainy cereal notes with quite bit of sweetness. Taste is also dominated by grainy cereal notes with some dry notes with quite a bit of residual sugar. Body is about average with medium carbonation and light warming alcohol. Interesting experience but just too sweet for me at the end of the day.

Poured in to FFF Teku.

A - Medium yellow; cloudy. Small layer of white head.

S - Fresh grapefruit and pine. A slight malt sweetness.

T - Pungent bitterness up front with lots of pine flavour that gives way to a bouquet of fresh grapefruit and orange peel. A very slight sweetness in the background. Comes across as more like a double IPA than a barleywine.

M - Medium body. Light carbonation.

O - I haven't had too many rice beers but this is certainly the best of the bunch so far.

Three Floyds & Mikkeller Risgoop

Appearance: This rice barleywine collaboration pours what looks like an IPA/IIPA. It is a slightly golden orange color with no evident carbonation. There is not much head, only a finger or so of white foam, and it is gone very quickly. The sediment is clearly there and creates a haziness, but it is not unappealing. There are no alcohol legs, and the lacing is nothing special, just like the rest of the appearance.

Aroma: There is lots of citrusy aroma here, with grapefruit and pink grapefruit dominating. Oranges are there, too. There is a faint, sweet toast/cracker malty smell, but the malt is mostly hidden. This basically smells like a Three Floyds beer, with nothing really standing out as unique. Still, the folks at Munster set a high bar so this is decent praise.

Taste: Three Floyds’ typical hop character comes through initially, which is immediately followed by a sweet, ricey, malty flavor, almost like horchata mixed with cajeta, the classic Spanish class drink. The rice is quite prominent, and it is actually welcome. The hops are rindy and bitter as well as grapefruity, lemony, and overall a citrus blast. Stop the presses, an intentionally adjunct beer that tastes good?! This definitely tastes nothing like a barleywine, however, so a half-point deduction needs to be asserted.

Mouthfeel: Not much to say here. The mouthfeel is medium, creamy, and the carbonation is perfect. The hops provide great astringency, and the finish is surprisingly dry. I would have liked some more syrupy feel, considering the style, but it is not unpleasant. The alcohol comes through in a very, very slight warmth at the tail end of the drink.

Overall: The rice adjunct really works well in capable hands. This beer is interesting tasting, but it really, really eschews style, even for the American persuasion of barleywine. Even Behemoth is not as ridiculously hopped as this beer. This is the first time I have been able to see what people are saying with Three Floyds overhopping their beers, and it really hurts the beer by throwing it more into the IIPA world and out of the barleywine world. Still, it tastes great for an IIPA, and that is really all that matters. 14.5/20

Pours orange with a 2 finger white head. Good lacing and retention.

Smells like a typical FFF offerings. Citrusy hops with a little bit of pine. Cereal malt aroma, but mostly hop forward.

Hops are still present, but not nearly as strong as the nose. A little citrus up front before the cereal grain flavor takes over. Tastes a bit like those sugar biscuits you get at a Chinese buffet. Not bad, but not a ton of discernable flavor either.

Medium bodied. Candied pine sits on the tongue in the aftertaste. Alcohol is fairly well hidden, but a bit of it gets through which I don't like in my IPA's.

Perfectly acceptable beer, but nothing really stands out about it except the price which is much too high. Many equal or better options for a lower price. Even APW and DN are cheaper than this and better.

Appearance: Hazy orange - white head, fades to nice wisp of a cap that sticks around, leaves some nice lacing

Smell: A rice barleywine? Honestly, this smells more like an IPA (win) - citrusy - orange, grapefruit, and some tropical notes including a ton of mango - malts are interesting - bread and some white rice - some pine, too

Taste: Citrus, rice, and bread - oranges, tangerines, and mango - oily pine - bitterness is low despite the hoppiness - lightly bready with some serious rice - a lot of booze and grass in the finish - decent balance overall

Mouthfeel: Full body, smooth, lightly sticky, nicely carbonated

Overall: Mad goop, yo

This is a very strange beer. Very hoppy, with a strong undercurrent of rice. It's reminiscent of a bizarre Asian cuisine.

o-great beer one of easier drinking barley wines i've had, almost consider a triple pale ale(imo), not overly bitter, very drinkable. wish i didnt live 60 miles away, would totally buy some more

A-Cloudy orange, nice carbonation, one finger head that doesn't last long.

S-Lots of citrus notes, some lemon, orange and grass. Hops are present but so is some alcohol heat.

T-Starts with a lot of citrus, like the nose lemons and orange. Mild bitterness in the finish.

M-Medium bodied, nice carbonation with a velvety feel.

O-Was expecting a little beer but still a solid beer. It does pack a punch though.

This collaborative Mikkeller - Three Floyds beer was on tap at my local bottle shop. Poured from a growler into a New Belgium snifter. Pours a murky orange-apricot color with a nice one finger head (quick dissipation) and really nice Belgian lacing. I try to nose it and damn! There's that damn FFF smell! Big, ripe tropical fruits like peaches and oranges and a solid, sweet, malt behind it. If you've had FFF, you know what I'm talking about. This stuff smells like Dreadnaught, only just a tad lower on the nose-meter.

Big blend of flavors, full body, and a slick, creamy feel. Huge syrupy sweetness like butter and marmalade on the front of the palate. The hops come in, but don't overload the palate. They blend with the sweetness and bring on flavors of apricots and pineapples. The finish is fairly dry, but remarkably smooth and free of booze for such a high ABV beer.

Barleywine my arse. You could tell me this is an Imperial IPA and I'd tell you it's a damn nice one. I won't quibble. You can call it a barleywine if you want, just be sure to call ME if they ever make more of this. This stuff is like Dreadnaught with a bit more sweetness and higher ABV. In other words, darn good.

22 oz bottle courtesy of Stephanie, thanks for mule-ing this back! Pours a hazed, light gold color with a bubbly white head, a few wispy strands of lace.

Nose is uber-hoppy, and reminds me of Zombie Dust. Sharp and leafy, with a biscuity malt. Grainy without a doubt and has an aroma of the dust around the crusher at the homebrew shop.

Taste is light bodied grainy sweetness with a nice shot of wheatgrass-y hoppiness. I find it to be more wheatwine than barleywine, its got a wheat tanginess to it along with a strong alcohol and the body is most definitely lighter than any other barleywine I have had. It is smooth though and the ABV is really well integrated considering what it is hiding behind. Tasty treat here, me likey.

A: Pours a brassy orange with a nice slightly off-white head. Nice lacing.

S: Ah yes, hops. Sweet and slightly abrasive aromas of apricot, pine, lactose, and pineapple.

T: Bitter assault of tropical hops. Mango, marshmallow, pineapple, lactose, pleasant alcohol sweetness, some chewy yet light pale malt behind.

M: Somewhat thick and chewy with crisp carbonation.

O: I haven't had a beer this satisfyingly bitter in a while. Not sure why they call the beers in this series barleywines instead of DIPAs, but either way this is delicious.

Poured from bomber bottle into tulip glass. A hazy, cloudy orange color with a massive white head lacing around glass.

Complex aroma of hops with pine resin, orange, mango and some pineapple. Very little malt presence. Big in your face hops where aroma feels like I can eat the hops. Reminds me of Dreadnaught.

Taste is all hops and very similar to their other Doubles. Big bitterness, complex hop flavor. Some subtle sweet caramel notes. The rice malt gives smooth but cleaner and dry finish. It's very subtle versus the other DIPAs they make. I can't even tell the malt is there, the hops dominate. Total Cascade.

Heavy bodied beer as you would expect but very easy drinking. Hides ABV too well.

I didn't touch this beer for a while and thought I might not like it because of the rice build but it's very hard to tell the difference. Very creative and awesome beer. I love FFF.

This one pours a very light bodied, clear light polished gold in color with little to no head. The nose is light and surprisingly hoppy. I get a lot of simcoe and sorachi hops, alot, and also some onion. The flavors are mildly sweet with plenty of dry and bitter hop character. The simcoe and sorachi run wild. The onion is moderately present. It drinks like a light, overly hopped Double IPA with a light malt bill. That threw me for a loop since it isn't anything.g like the rest of the series. It drinks light yet sticky. There is a good amount of residual sugar. Overall this is a really different beer. It has that rice, sorachi aspect down, like a sweeter imperial version of Gold Leader without the grass.

I see Three Floyds is going after the elusive Asian beer-drinker dollar with a rice beer…classic marketing strategy. I am both offended and impressed.

A: Pale amber orange body with a ton of haze – looks like apple cider. An eggshell head of chunky foam climbs to about a half-inch; not much in itself, but it is impressive how long it stands. Thick lacing all around.

S: White rice scents provide an overarching earthy tone. Unfamiliar, but not unwelcome. I never imagined I’d pair a barleywine with a rice dinner, but thick caramel and molasses notes lay out as the other big hitters of the nose – lots of dark sugars at play here. Brighter aromas of citronella, vanilla, and pear balance these scents, along with a light pineapple and mango flourish from the hops.

T: A sweet palate that maintains an appropriate balance at all times. First tastes are laid thick with honey, lactose sugar, and vanilla, but with the drying snap of resinous hops and mildly astringent rice tastes. At first, the hops give off a floral, grassy character, but that soon turns into a taste that’s slightly oniony – “pungent” would be a good word to describe it. Sustained aftertaste of caramel with a touch of dry, lemony hoppiness.

M: This is a big, sticky beer, one you can feel all the way down – and that’s even with all the stinging hops. I’d drink this one quick as opposed to cellaring it; after a few years it would probably be too thick to stomach. A little alcohol heat, but not much.

O: I don’t like a ton of residual sugars in my beer, so I’m not digging on this one too much. Still, this is an original idea in hoppy Three Floyds + Mikkeller style, so I’d pick it up if you have no qualms about spending about $20 on a rice beer. For me, it’s one and done.

Ok, so I read all the reviews of this beer and you probably have too. So why repeat what they all say.
The only thing I want to add that im picking up that nobody has touched on is taste that I cant quite figure out. reminds me of a homecooked meal i think. Im sniffing the shit out of my glass and what im thinking it reminds me of fresh cooked green beans. Maybe its bitter brussel sprouts?
I dont know. maybe its just a combination of pine/spicy/citrus hops all together its odd, not bad at all, just different. I enjoy it. made me pick up a new taste receptor lol

Also I think im picking up a fresh honey taste too. I only saw one person mention that but I agree maybe clover honey?

This is a very unique beer.

Too bad this is a limited release and I probably wont be able to ask anyone else what they think of it. To see how they compare the taste to my "fresh cooked green been" taste

A: hazy yellow/amber, modest head with ok retention

S: Hoppy with Citra hops and floral notes present. Rice sweetness.

T: Alcoholic with heavy malts. hoppy along the taste. some bitterness.

M: heavy and full, some dryness on the finish.

O: Rice beers aren't my favorite but this well served by the hops. Solid Barleywine.

Honey-amber pour, slightly hazy, a small off-white head settled to a thick collar, leaving splotchy lacing on the glass. Fruity esters on the nose, caramel candy, slight earthy hop notes. More caramel candy in the taste, sweet overripe fruits, citrus zest, earthy hops, somewhat of a caramelized rice cake or caramel corn sensation, but that could just have been my brain processing the fact that this is a ricewine...or it could've been authentic. Medium body, medium carbonation, slightly oily, with a slightly drying finish thanks to the mild yet lingering hop presence. Alcohol was pretty well hidden, making this a pretty drinkable brew overall.

Well... That's a pretty useless menu blurb if you're looking for info about the flavor profile... But here we go.
Clear, honey-touched golden body with some orange hues. Ecru head of one fluffy finger. Great retention and nice lacing.

Not a lot of malt presence on the nose-- perhaps some crystal? I know this is brewed with rice, but I can't find it in the aroma. Smells hoppy though-- and some booziness coming across as well.

The flavor has a light sweetness up front, then dries out, shows off some big bitterness, and finishes dry and boozy. The hop flavors aren't nearly as prominent as the hop bitterness, but some floral and spice notes come through... Perhaps just a hint of citrus as well.

Feels pretty hefty-- ample carbonation though. Firm body with an oily lingering sensation.

Overall-- not the best from Munster... In fact, this is the worst of this collab series... Still, it isn't bad, it's just that perhaps my expectations were too high, or maybe I was hoping for a flavor wallop! This seems too boozy and bitter, and riceay have been a poor choice (to be fair, what else is left? They've done oat, wheat, rye, and rice?!)

22 oz bomber, no bottled-on date, poured into a tulip glass.

A- Pours a clear, slightly pale golden color, produces a finger of creamy off-white head, leaves nice lacing.

S- Big citrusy, piney and earthy hops, some pine and light medicinal bubblegum aroma.

T- Similar to the nose, lots of juicy citrus and tropical fruit, as well as yeast, sugary esters and alcohol. The booze is actually pretty well hidden.

M- Full-bodied, smooth feel with a dry finish, mild alcohol warmth.

O- An interesting beer and definitely worth trying, although I definitely liked Boogoop considerably more.

ok so i was lucky enough to find this in my hometown, and i wasn't sure if $20 would be worth it.. and i was right, i probably wouldn't buy this again at that price.

A: golden hue with a white fizzy head.

S: citrus, hops, dryness.

T: very smooth for the amount of hops you can smell. taste is excellent.

M: sort of dry, fizzy, hoppy.

O: this is a great brew, like i said the price would keep me away from it again. $20 is a bit steep for what you get but if you have the chance to sample it then go for it because it has a great flavor and smell.
