This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Now this is a saison! This refreshing Belgian-style ale is the combined effort of Three Floyds and De Molen’s fantastic brewer Menno (the real Dutch Hercules). This spicy and bracing ale was brewed in Munster, but look out for the one we brew in Holland at DeMolen. Cheers and drost!

I think this is a saison in name only , because I have never quite had a saison that fits this profile. The Three Floyds motto is "It's not normal", and this fits the motto.

Pouring a golden yellow color, the ale like a white head in the snifter glass. A mild grass aroma came from the glass though the aroma was far from potent. Lacking the "funk" of a saison, the ale certainly had a lot of other interesting elements in the taste. Hops make a big impression with notes of citrus pineapple, mild grapefruit, and a certain earthiness. It has a pretty broad spectrum of hops. The mouthfeel had a certain thickness that I associate with the style, making the taste thick enough to linger. This was important as the taste was allowed to linger and warm the back of the throat. I am not a fan of saisons, but enjoyed this one. Maybe I enjoyed it because it is so strikingly different from other saisons. (901 characters)

Notes from a review on 11/30/12

This is the biggest 'saison' in every way. It pours a completely opaque hazy gold/orange with a great white head made up of mostly small, tight bubbles. The aroma is very yeast/cereal like with HUGE citrus hops - ripe grapefruit and mango, orange juice. The tastes follows the nose - very bready but also very bitter from a strong hop presence. Just crazy huge citrus hops.

This is a fantastic beer - don't know if I would call it a saison, but more of a DIPA with saison ingredients. (519 characters)

Smooth grapefruit juice, hoppy yet not bitter, a great balance of spice and malt makes it a very tasty beverage indeed, also some melon and candy. Grapefruit aroma. Cloudy grapefruit appearance with some retained head. Thanks for the extra bottles, John (253 characters)

A - dark orange with a thin white head

S - oranges, yeast, peaches

T - yeast, oranges, orange rind, faintly bitter

M - dry, very well carbonated, smooth

This is a very nice saison. It has a nice citrusy character that is very refreshing and offers a great drinkability. My only complaint is that there is a rind-like dryness throughout. Nonetheless, this is a quality beer that is definitely worth a try. (408 characters)

22oz bomber, split 3 ways, cheers @suncrust

appearance: served in my great lakes chalice, bright (but hazy) orange body, full creamy white head

smell: distinctively 3 floyds - bright citrus hop bouquet, juicy citrus, distant peppery spice

taste: Sure, it's not to style, but it's much better than Rabbid Rabbit. FFF influence is strong - De Molen is no stranger to hops either but outside of the label design, I would never have guessed they were involved. Bright juicy hops - tangerine, grapefruit, lemon.

mouthfeel: bold hop profile, slight dry finish

overall: very enjoyable (583 characters)

The beer pours a rich looking amber with no head. The nose is pure grapefruit hops with a touch of funk...barnyard zombie dust? There just as much grapefruit in the taste and aftertaste along with good yeast character and sweetness. The beer's mouthfeel is medium with ample carbonation.
This is a great beer and an unexpected highlight at our tasting. (353 characters)

Big thanks goes out to aasher for sharing this one during the One Year Anniversary of My Wreck Tasting! Served from bottle into a Crooked Stave ‘Crooked Line’ tulip. Poured a hazy golden yellow-orange with a half finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, pineapple, citrus, citrus hop, and passion fruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, fruit, tropical fruit, citrus, and fruit hop. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a good brew. There was quite a bit of fruit going on in this one which was a welcomed change-up for the evening. This helped to make it quite easy to drink and enjoyable. There wasn’t really that much that stood out to me on this one which is why I can’t put it in the next tier. What was there was quite nice, but just missed a little something to take it to the next level. Worth trying if you get the chance. (984 characters)

Served in a tulip glass, quick review from written notes.

Dripping spotty lace, lasting veil over the surface. Bright orange body. Savory tropical aroma, alternating sweet and dry. Huge papaya and dried mango flavors. Finishes dry and clean, some lingering fruitiness with a bubblegum aftertaste. Impressions of fuzzy fruit skins and distinctive dried papaya. Great balance and unique flavors on display here... (413 characters)
