This brew was enjoyed on our second trip to Three Floyds’ establishment in Munster, Indiana. It was served on draught into a generic and blunted half-sized chalice. The pour showed the deepest chocolate brown coloring, with a supporting head of burnt chicory bubbles that stood the width of half a finger. The latter retained moderately, etching thin pencil designs of lacing around the glasses. No haze or sediment was appreciated, and carbonation appeared to be light. The aroma boasted the juiciest green grassy, grapefruity, and dripping nectary hoppiness. This was met by a warm stouty base of massive coffee malt bitters and burnt chocolate malt dustiness, sweet bubblegum esters, smoked brown grain, cigarette ash, chlorine chemical bite, ginger root and chive freshness, burnt cinnamon and pumpernickel toast, distant pumpkin spice, and light plastic phenols. The taste to follow was a powerhouse of cloying milk and dark chocolate syrups and malt bite, thick black molasses, burnt black, chocolate, and coffee maltiness, equally as sweet nectary and tropical pineapple, mango, and citric fruity hoppiness, marijuana brownie butter and batter, cardboard and Styrofoam, fiery booze, pencil tip woodiness, big bubblegum esters, liquid caramel, coppery metallics, burnt Creme brûlée sugars, muddy mineral, and cocoa-powdered truffles. The body was full and chewy, leaving the mouth entirely coated with massively foamy cream and froth. Slurp and smack were appropriate. Carbonation felt light but contributory. Otherwise, the mouth met astringency that dusted into powdered chalkiness the more you sat on it. Drinkability was fantastic for this beer’s given IBUs and abv.

Overall, pegged at 97 IBUs, this is one approachable and heavily sweetened beer. There is so much chocolate through the mouth that gets layered and layered upon by waves of nectary and tropical fruity hoppiness. The more you drink it the more you realized that this is less of a separation, and more of an interwoven, integral union. And what a union it is!! That level of hoppiness is just so hard to come by, especially for your bigger stouts; really for your darker beers in general, we suppose. We’re talking IPA-quality hoppiness. Think Young’s Double Chocolate meets something like Lagunitas Sucks, but in the most world-class way, with the densest forest of the most top-quality ingredients available. It certainly approaches the level of hoppiness one would find these days in your black ales/black IPAs, but with an insanely thick and hearty malt spine. This is our first stout from Three Floyds, and it honestly blew us away with its hop bombing for days. This is a fantastic, savory beer, and is truly unlike anything we’ve encountered before.
