Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a tulip glass.

A - Yes, I get it. Blot out the Sun. This could do it. It's dark. The head is browner than I expected given the reviews I've read on here. Pitch black, mocha head. Beautiful.

N - Ok, now I get it. It smells like a Black IPA. Roasty notes with some hop action. Dark fruits with some dank bitterness. Complex without being overpowering.

T - Weird. Up front I get lots of fruit: raisins, plums, maybe over-ripe peaches. Definitely get that Black Ale description. But the finish is all imperial stout. Very roasty - in fact, I'd say one of the roastier stouts I've had, like a Marshal Zhukov or a Serpent's Stout. A very interesting beer.

M - I don't get the thickness of a big stout, which is ok! I get some coating and a slight velvety-ness. Very fine.

O - An extremely complex and interesting beer. Is it what I want in an imperial stout? No. Is it well crafted? Absolutely. (947 characters)

for an imperial stout, I found this beer to be very hoppy. If I did not know better, I would classify this as a black IPA. Slight coffee hints, but covered by hops, this is a pretty cool beer. (194 characters)

Got in a trade.

Poured in a snifter, it is jet-black with a finger of luxurious foam. The lacing is thick and foamy. (Cascade?) Hops on the nose with roasted cocoa and Italian coffee. Huge chocolate, chewy malt, and almost spicy hop on the backend. Roasty notes follow through, too. Mouthfeel is thick with alcohol singe. This is simply amazing--the contrast of hop and cocoa isn't a contrast at all but a complex underlay. This is a new all-time favorite. (458 characters)

22oz bomber, dated 12/16/2014. Pours black with a medium-sized brown head which leaves rings of lacing on the glass. Smell is dominated by piney hops and grapefruit. More colorful taste of piney hops, grapefruit, roasted malt, and cocoa. Some bitterness throughout and alcohol warming on the finish. Below average body and present carbonation. Overall, this feels more like a black IPA than an imperial stout, but is flavorful and well-crafted nonetheless. (462 characters)

Look - Jet black. Not as thick on head but was not agressive with pour. Tan head color. Lacing is not retained.

Smell - Black IPA mixed with stout. Hoppy. Orange. Grapefruit. Dank. Chocolate. Coffee. Alcohol. Very complex and perfect.

Taste - Alcohol, pine, and bitter up front. Chocolate and caramel finish.

Feel - Not too creamy, not too watery. Carbonation does not explode.

Overall - I am glad I picked up a bottle of this after having it as my last beer at Dark Lord Day 2015. I am much more coherent this time around. It is a great stout! (551 characters)

Very different for an imperial stout. To the eye and on the pour it very much is a stout but the nose screams black IPA. There is a stout quality to the mouthfeel and taste but a bitterness on the backend that is more characteristic of an IPA. Overall a very cool spin on the stout style (287 characters)

Pours thick jet black with a very sturdy finger and a half of light khaki foam.

Huge orange and piney hop aroma with chocolate and roasted malt adding some balance.

Chocolate, orange, light roast coffee, and earthy hop resin.

Medium-heavy bodied, medium-high carbonation, roasty, slightly chewy, sticky.

Overall, this is a super-hopped impy stout that'll please any hop head and stout fan. (393 characters)

A - Opaque black, with a hint of red. Light tan head, with legs. Lacing is mild.

S - Bright hop of citrus and roasted malts. A slight hint of alcohol burn.

T - A lovely coupling of hop citrus pith and chocolatey malts. A nice middle fills with roast flavors. The close is mildly bitter but constrained.

M - A full coating, bright carbonation, dry close, and easy return.

O - It may be called a stout, but this is a beer better understood as a black IPA, or a cascadian black ale. Full and bright with lovely flavors, I'd drink this regularly. It is even and balanced, despite its hop forwardness, with nice roast elements and a malty sweetness to counter the bitter notes. (684 characters)

Extreme darkness, only a dark brown around the edges. Thick. Had this on tap so I can't comment on the head.

The smell is odd. It's a very mild smell but the only thing that stands out is licorice. Somewhat floral.

Tastes better than it smells. Lots of roasted grains with a smokey scent. Licorice is prevalent but not overwhelming. Slight floral taste.

Very hoppy and bitterish for the style, kind of like a black IPA. High ABV is subtle. Thick but not all that creamy. Slight bittering finish.

Overall it's not as good as I thought it would be, but still good. Tastes more pale ale-like than an RIS. (617 characters)

Poured into a Duvel snifter glass

A - 4.75 - Pours black in color. Forms a finger of quickly dissipating, dark tan colored head. Medium head potential, low head retention. Spotty lacing.
S - 3 - Is this a black IPA? I could have sworn the label said "imperial stout". Slight touch of malts and chocolate, loaded with hops, peach, orange and grapefruit.
T - 2.75 - Not bad at all, but not a stout. This drinks to me like an imperial black IPA should. Its got a decent amount of malt and chocolate, but the hops stand out and are aggressive.
F - 4 - Medium/Full bodied mouthfeel.
O - 3.75 - A decently tasty brew, but not what was advertised nor what I was in the mood for when I opened it. This does NOT drink like a stout, it drinks like a black IPA! (751 characters)

5 oz taster glass, from tap.

Appearance: Your typical stout - black of color, dark tan of head, with good retention.

Smell: Straight hops, nothing else. This smells much like I imagine perfume that has gone rancid smells.

Taste: The taste follows the aroma, nothing but a solid wall of acrid floral bite. I can't even conceive of any other descriptor than what I would guess taking a swig of some excessively flowery perfume right from the bottle could be like.

Mouthfeel: I got two sips in, and couldn't even register mouthfeel, so I default this category to decent.

Overall: This is a black IPA that is mislabeled as a stout. Those of you who don't share my hop sensitivity would probably find it amazing - I get a single note barrage of disgust. (753 characters)

A bit too hoppy for such a big stout but tasty nonetheless. this should come as no surprise since basically everything from three floyds seems to depend on hops (not an insult either). (185 characters)

22 ounce bottle into signature teku glass; no bottle dating, but is a recent release. Pours pitch black color with a 2 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, orange peel, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, molasses, floral, grass, light dark fruit, light char, and floral/roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops and dark/roasted malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, orange peel, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, molasses, pine, floral, grass, light dark fruit, light char, and floral/roasted earthiness. Fair amount of pine/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, orange peel, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, molasses, pine, light char, and floral/roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and dark/roasted malt flavors; with a great bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, fairly creamy/sticky, and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a great hoppy imperial stout. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and dark/roasted malt flavors; and very smooth to drink for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering. (1,613 characters)

Look - deep dark with a dark tan head
Smell - smells kind of like a black ipa so it has a hop smell but with lots of toasty malts
Taste - hop forward with a great toasty malt backbone and some booziness
Feel - medium body with medium lite carbonation
Overall - on the verge of a black ipa but it's so good! (306 characters)

22oz bomber poured into large snifter. Strange artwork on this one, but I rarely pass up a 3 Floyds beer that I haven't tried.

Look: Pitch black with light tan head that you would expect from a stout with coffee

Smell: Not what I expected. Not at all stout-like. Almost like a black IPA, but not as pleasant. That being said...very hoppy, slightly smoky. The nose grows on you, but still not reminiscent of a stout. Possibly smoky like bacon.

Taste: Dark like a stout, but first thing that hits my tongue is hops. Possibly lime or citrus. Mostly hops, borders between black ipa and stout. Reminiscent of Alpha Klaus.

Feel: Very lacy mouthfeel that lingers. Still not seeing the coffee, roasty-ness of a stout that I enjoy. Hard to place, but overall enjoyable.

Overall: I don't mind it. It made for a good nightcap, but very boozy. I feel like it is off from the style, but very hoppy like most 3 Floyds beers (932 characters)

Bottled on 12/16/2014 (I think..was partially worn off), sampled and reviewed on February 16, 2015.

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint" glass. I really need to go shopping for some glassware.

Pours..pretty much black. Looks beautiful and tops off with a nice 1.5" light brown head of foam. Good retention throughout. Smell is dark fruit, raspberries, cranberries, cherries, maybe some pineapple, and notes of hops here and there. Upon tasting, strong hints of dark fruit and chocolate. A bit malty and incredibly enjoyable. Slightly heavy on the palate but not quite as much as other stouts. Very smooth from beginning to end. I sense a bit of bread or dough as the aftertaste sets in, but still strong hints of sweetness and fruit.

This is the first beer from FFF that I've had the privilege of trying and it honestly blew me away. Probably the best beer I've ever tried, period. Simply delicious. I was lucky enough to grab the last one from the store tonight and I'll be getting more every chance I get. (1,034 characters)

2/9 - Monk's Pub (Chicago) - Draft - Very nice dark pour, taste was fruity and a bit sweet, but not overpowering. Nice a smooth to drink, the hops were strong and tasted excellent. Beer was thick and felt really good in my mouth, almost like syrup. An overall excellent beer, so act fast, time is running out, and grab a few bottles or pours when you have a chance. If you like strong thick beer with a great taste, you'll want to order this offering. (451 characters)

My second beer at the Three Floyds tap takeover at Tap On Main. Pure black 3000 mile used motor oil darkness of a beer. Head is just a skim as it is delivered from the tap. Nose is full of charred wood and roasted malts. Taste is really where I want to spend some time on. This is such a different beast from their other very well known Imperial Stout that will not be named here. The anise bounces off the alcohol content with almost electric force. Dark fruits mix with burnt black strap molasses. A pleasant and appropriate hop character comes in on the back side of the palate. This hop character stays dark and carries a wonderful flavor ride as the beer warms and you continue to drink. It is really consistent throughout the palate. This is a very good Imperial stout that is a nice change of pace for Three Floyds. (833 characters)

AP: Pours a dark muddy brown, with a nice 2 finger mocha colored head that settles in a lingering ring with lacing that recedes down the glass. AR: Smells of piney hops and dark toasted raisin bread. Nice amount of booziness as it warms. TA: Drinks more like a Black IPA/Cascadian Dark than a stout. Black IPA in a stouts leisure suit. Loads of brown sugar, orange peel and dark bread. Raisins and hint of tobacco lead into a herbaceous drying hop bite. MF: Moderate carbonation leaves a sticky syrupy hoppy film that coats the mouth. OV: Glad I had it. Not sure I would seek it out on purpose in the future, but would drink it if it were present and unattended. (662 characters)

Pours thick dark with a medium caramel head. Smells of hops and burnt coffee. Has a huge hops taste with burnt coffee, there is a hint of tobacco and licorice in the background. Somewhat syrupy with mild carbonation. Not sure I like all the hops in a stout, makes it more like a black IPA than a stout. (306 characters)

tap....agree with others that say this veers hard towards a black IPA and isn't much of a stout. Loads of hops that really overwhelm much of what potentially lies beneath. A fun try, with some nice hop flavors, but not much else going on.

That said, the BA Blot I had awhile back was a surprising stunner of a beer. (316 characters)

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass. Bottled Dec 16th 2014.

Murky walnut brown, with maybe just a finger tall of thin bubbled mocha to tan colored head right off the pour. Body is quite thick and somewhat cloudy, maybe some red highlights poking out, but then leaves with an oily slightly filmy top and good sized bubbled collar.

Aroma is hop heavy. Fruity hints of grapefruit zest and some tropical fruit like notes as well. Hint of citrus oil everywhere. Lots of classic stout aromas though are completely masked by this and totally buried. Just a little bit of roast grain character comes out slightly. Hints mostly to lots of mushy fruit quality, but a very inviting aroma.

Hop oils on first sip coat everywhere, with controlled and large bitterness. Mid palate fills with lots of grapefruit and zest flavors. Mild sensing roast and char on the finish but really buried, and also quite a bit of a wet body. Hop angles won't seem to let go on the brew in the palate. Peppery, citrus lime even a bit, but virtually no sense of stout roast, char, coffee, chocolate or other classic characters. Body is surprisingly weak on the palate and washes with hardly any thickness for a stout.

This definitely comes off as more of a black IPA than anything, and really seems to be missing much of the dark roast character on top of it. A big one note brew unfortunately, but also missing a lot of other qualities to make me want to return. (1,455 characters)

Best stout that I've ever had from a bottle. Expensive at $19 a bomber, but if you like stouts, and you believe $19 for a beer is acceptable (I'm not sure I do, someone else bought the bottle I got to try), then drink this beer. (228 characters)

If this was a black IPA it would be the best I've ever had but it's a Imperial Stout. Only reason I rated it this high is because it's a fantastic tasting beer but far from the best Imperial Stout. (197 characters)

Dark black body. Very floral aroma with some sweet roasted chocolate smell. Tastes to me more like an imperial black IPA. The hops seem more present than the coffee and chocolate taste; however, still can easily pick up the sweet tastes. It’s very good, but a little to hoppy for my liking. (292 characters)
