Its a black ipa ... and a damn good one.

Pours thick dark with a medium caramel head. Smells of hops and burnt coffee. Has a huge hops taste with burnt coffee, there is a hint of tobacco and licorice in the background. Somewhat syrupy with mild carbonation. Not sure I like all the hops in a stout, makes it more like a black IPA than a stout.

tap....agree with others that say this veers hard towards a black IPA and isn't much of a stout. Loads of hops that really overwhelm much of what potentially lies beneath. A fun try, with some nice hop flavors, but not much else going on.

That said, the BA Blot I had awhile back was a surprising stunner of a beer.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass. Bottled Dec 16th 2014.

Murky walnut brown, with maybe just a finger tall of thin bubbled mocha to tan colored head right off the pour. Body is quite thick and somewhat cloudy, maybe some red highlights poking out, but then leaves with an oily slightly filmy top and good sized bubbled collar.

Aroma is hop heavy. Fruity hints of grapefruit zest and some tropical fruit like notes as well. Hint of citrus oil everywhere. Lots of classic stout aromas though are completely masked by this and totally buried. Just a little bit of roast grain character comes out slightly. Hints mostly to lots of mushy fruit quality, but a very inviting aroma.

Hop oils on first sip coat everywhere, with controlled and large bitterness. Mid palate fills with lots of grapefruit and zest flavors. Mild sensing roast and char on the finish but really buried, and also quite a bit of a wet body. Hop angles won't seem to let go on the brew in the palate. Peppery, citrus lime even a bit, but virtually no sense of stout roast, char, coffee, chocolate or other classic characters. Body is surprisingly weak on the palate and washes with hardly any thickness for a stout.

This definitely comes off as more of a black IPA than anything, and really seems to be missing much of the dark roast character on top of it. A big one note brew unfortunately, but also missing a lot of other qualities to make me want to return.

Best stout that I've ever had from a bottle. Expensive at $19 a bomber, but if you like stouts, and you believe $19 for a beer is acceptable (I'm not sure I do, someone else bought the bottle I got to try), then drink this beer.

If this was a black IPA it would be the best I've ever had but it's a Imperial Stout. Only reason I rated it this high is because it's a fantastic tasting beer but far from the best Imperial Stout.

Dark black body. Very floral aroma with some sweet roasted chocolate smell. Tastes to me more like an imperial black IPA. The hops seem more present than the coffee and chocolate taste; however, still can easily pick up the sweet tastes. It’s very good, but a little to hoppy for my liking.

Smells like bittersweet roasty chocolate.. Bitter grapefruit and tropical fruits slam on to your tongue VERY quickly.. Hops are prominent here and dominant the chocolate.. Not thick.. Very similar to a black IPA, but much more complex and creative! DELICIOUS!

Really great hop infused stout. I would expect a chocolaty malt flavor to clash with a strong crisp hop flavor but they combine very nicely. Definitely worth a purchase.

Amazingly hoppy stout... The beer reminds me of Alpha Klaus but a little thicker... Roasted chocolate malts mingle with a piney hop assaullt that won't quit...

Overly hopped, too astringent for a stout. Body too thin for a stout, especially for the higher gravity. More like a less flavorful black IPA.

Same smell as any 3 floyds beer. Mouthfeel was not as thick as I would expect a imperial stout to be.

When I saw Imperial Stout on a 3-F's label I almost lost it!

A - Deep and dark brown color, basically black but not as stark black as Sublimely. Pours thick with khaki head with nice lacing.

S - Tons of hops at the beginning with some nice roasted, chocolaty tones in the back. After warming the malt and roasted character becomes more noticeable but still dominated by the fresh hop fragrance. Herbal, citrus, and pine are the most distinguishing characteristics.

T - Lots of delicious flavor with the citrus hops really shinning through. Seems like simcoe hops with the pine, herbal, and citrus flavor really pounding it in there There is the roasty, malt sweetness to help but the hops are the showcase. It is over the top hoppy but with the warming richness of the stout you know that this is a 3-F's creation. Lots of hop bitterness and a little from the roasted malt but it has a little salvation from just the sheer flavor impact of the hops and stout.

M - Heavy mouth-feel with perfect carbonation. Not a total oil slick but not a light feeling beer and a nice bitterness.

Overall, a very delicious beer. It is definitely an Imperial Black IPA and not a normal Imperial Stout but I really love hoppy stouts. I tried to get this beer as close to 52 degrees (cellar) that I could and I was rewarded with a big complex beer that is hop forward and flavor-FULL. There is plenty of hops, bitterness, and that robust stout character makes it worth every penny. It is less citrusy and more full bodied than Stone's Sublimely Self-righteous but with the overall impact and size you can't go wrong with this one.

Very resiny, roasty, and citrusy grapefruit aroma. Flavor is on the sweeter side, resin and dank cannabis dominant, finishing fairly bitter, with grapefruit running throughout. Tastes like eating a pot-filled grapefruit that's dusted in confectioners sugar and cocoa powder. And pine. A fistful of pine.

Expounding upon the recent collaborations that resulted in "Blakkr", its exactly that flavor that spurred Three Floyds brewers to take it deeper into the stout world.

"Blot Out The Sun" pours with a shade off of black, making it more "blur out the sun" as peaks of crimson and garnet peak through the center. With a frothy and thick head forming, the bursting scent of burnt pine cone, singed citrus peel and roasted marshmallow extends seamlessly into taste.

Lavish espresso, cocoa, roasting walnut, and burnt sugars lay a milky underlay upon the tongue. Soon after the bitter chocolates, walnut and whipping cream flavor carry a smoky and charred element before the hops grip the palate with its acidic touch. White grapefruit, bitter orange and spruce all make a mark on the beer's taste with the finish looming.

Full both on flavor and on texture, the boisterous taste trends roasty, dryish and somewhat acrid. Its immense alcohol projects through the dry and toasty taste and is abrasive against the mouth, even though the burnt sweetness of milk and orange trickle onward in aftertaste.
