Pitch black with a finger width brown coffee head. The nose emits a little roast but not a lot of other things pop out. The taste is a straight forward oatmeal stout. It has that sort of funk from the oat that oatmeal stouts are known for. It's got a nice roast that rounds all the flavor together. Most of all it is full flavored while clocking in at a sessionable ABV.

22oz bottle poured into a tulip

Very viscous brown turns pitch black in the glass. A large tan head that lingers. Massively roasty and touches of cocoa on the nose. Very roasty, with milk chocolate. Roasty and dry like coffee. lots of vanilla. A perfectly balanced bitterness. Easy drinking. Doesn't drink like a beer as strong as it is. One of the best non aged stouts.

Poured from a bottle into a Three Floyds pub glass. The pour is very dark (black for all intents and purposes) and sports 2.5 fingers of fluffy mocha-colored head which dissipates very slowly down to a clumpy lacing. I get some roasted grainy notes on the nose with light coffee and cream. It's slightly sweet and a little earthy.

Medium body and mild, well-balanced flavor. There are plenty of roasty notes, some sweetness from the malt, and a smooth feel from the oats. After a bready opening comes a quick whiff of coffee-and-cream bitterness and sweetness, then a little sarsaparilla on the finish. Very smooth, easy-drinking, and true to the style.

Why is this getting lukewarm reviews? I can only guess it's because (A) people have come to expect "extreme" beers from Three Floyds and this one is not extreme or (B) this is a rather expensive bottle of what is basically a standard representation of the style. I have to rate it below "excellent" for reason (B) (yes, I take price into consideration when I review a beer). It's not as good as Anderson Valley's Barney Flats or Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout and it's considerably more expensive. That doesn't compute (even if the bottle does have some nice, paganistic "death metal" artwork). Nice beer, but overpriced and for fans of the the style only.

Pours dark black in color letting little to no light through. Head is about one and a half fingers and has really great retention.

Smell has lots of chocolate malt forward there is also a light tartness but i can't figure out what it's from.slight creamy aroma from the oat.

Taste follows the nose lots of chocolate malt is forward with a very faint char that works well with the very mild tart flavor. More light char and smokey flavors on the backend along with some mild oat flavors.

Mouthfeel is good. Moderately thick body is cut nicely with a mild charred bitterness. Very light carbonation keeps this a nice sipping beer.

Appearance-
Opulent darkness, but enough light betrays a brown blood color. Rich burnt tan head.

Smell-
Toasted oats, pepper, and just a hop bitter twist that goes with hop laden stouts.

Taste-
Anyone remember that Coke Black product that was a mixture of coke and coffee? If you don't I am not surprised, that would be an indicator of how popular it was. Long story short, it reminds me of that. So mix coffee and coke together (not as bad as you would think), or just drink this.

Mouthfeel-
Creamy like an oatmeal stout should, but the bubbles thin it out a bit.

Overall-
The cover art and my love for Three Floyds made me buy it, but I wouldn't seek it out again.
