Appearance: A pitch black pour with a massive tan head perched upon the liquid; great retention and lacing
Smell: Leafy, resinous hops dominate, with the roasty malts hardly discernable underneath
Taste: While there is a bit of roasty and chocolate mocha character, up front, the leafy, resinous hops overwhelm the palate from start to finish with the stout elements returning to add a vague coffee tone in the finish
Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation
Overall: This beer has to be way more than 40 IBUs and I wouldn't be surprised if it were 140 as it is an assault on the tastebuds; as others have noted, this is much more of an American Black than a stout (perhaps that is why they call it a "stout ale" using stout as more of an adjective than a style descriptor)
Thanks, aslamm75, for the opportunity

Spent one year in the cellar bough fresh from the brewery
Pours pitch black in color and pretty viscous. A big finger and a half foamy light tan head retains nicely.
Smell is good. Lots of roasted barley maybe some rye are forward in the nose and fade to a toffee aroma. an earthy hop aroma finishes.
Taste follows the nose with big roasted barley and rye flavors upfront. Malt is decently balanced with a mild bite, hints of tobacco and saddle leather, moderate earthy hop flavor and mild bitterness.
Mouthfeel is moderately thick with a little bit of stickiness and some oily hoppy resin.
Had I realized how hoppy this was I would have drank it fresh. Not a great stout but I'll give it the benifit of the doubt considering it's age.
