Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: MasterSki on 04-19-2013

This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Brewed with our friends at Surly, this Imperial Brett IPA is fermented with a unique strain of yeast, Brettanomyces Lambicus. This yeast creates earthy barnyard notes along with pineapple and cherry pie aromas. Of course, it’s hopped heavily. Simcoe and Chinook are the culprits for the “cat peed on the Christmas tree” aroma.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled 6/20/13.

Appearance - Hazy orange. Big white head. Lasts quite a while. Thick collar.

Smell - Stone fruits like peach. Brett, but not an earthy brett. Fruitier. Citrusy, but not too simcoe-y.

Taste - Bright citrus here. Orange and then turns more grapefruity. Peachy. Grainy brett flavor. Not overly strong yet. A lot of pale malt as the hops and brett die down.

Mouthfeel - Easy to drink, if a bit sweet. Medium carbonation.

Overall - It's tasty. Be interesting to see how this develops.

A - Smooth as velvet pour. Burnt orange color. 1.5 fingers of bright white, fluffy head that sticks around.

S - Brett is out front. Funky barnyard smell along with some sweet undertones. Then the hops come through. Pine, citrus. First time I've smelled these two scents in the same glass. Bravo!

T - Who'd a thought? Funky Brett and high alpha hops living in harmony. It's all there, and done oh so well. Not much malt in the profile. That's to be expected.

M - Smooth, creamy, velvety. Like buttah

O - A one off marvel. Two of the most respected breweries in the country collaborate, and good things happen. Make it a regular occurence, Nick and Omar.

Poured from a 22oz bottle dated 6/25/13 into a FFF tulip glass
A: A slightly hazy orange color with a fair amount of carbonation, contributing to a two-finger head that quickly settles to a thick lacing
S: Layered & complex with grapefruit hops initially followed by a big dose of brett, then a hint of pine and full caramel malt finish it off
T: I like this. It is reminiscent of the other FFF DIPAs but with brett that adds a nice sourness/complexity. Starts off with sour grapefruit then again a funky bretty midpalate ending with a sour apple finish. Lacks the malt backbone I typically find with their other pale ales, though
M: Medium-bodied, sour, crisp
O: Good not great, I like it a bit more than the average score here

S - Tropical nose dominated by mangoes with a bit of lemon

T - Mangoes, lemon, light pine near the end. Light Orval-like brett and funk on the backend.

M - Medium body with light carbonation. Dry, funky aftertaste

O - Solid double IPA with lots of mango flavor and a good brett presence. Definitely good fresh

Pours light orange, bright white head, finger, fluffy, lacy. Aroma was mostly all Brett, funky, wet hay, musky. Some floral hops, but the Brett was up front for sure. Tasted wasn't nearly as much Brett, But lacked some complexity. Fairly bitter, floral and piny hops with some jaunts of musk and hay. Body was oily, slick, somewhat bubbly and crisp, not too heavy though, which was good.

Overall, interesting for sure. I enjoyed the Brett in the aroma, but it didn't connect as well in the taste...still a quite good beer. The price tag is a bit unfortunate for what you get though, truth be told.
