American Pale Wheat Ale |  5.60% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
An American Wheat Ale, Gumballhead is named in honor of the underground comic book cat created by Rob Syers. Initially a seasonal summer beer, now brewed year round due to demand. This beer helped redefine American Wheat Beers. Brewed with Amarillo Hops and a generous portion of American red wheat, Gumballhead has a complex hop aroma with notes of grapefruit, lemon zest, marmalade and peach. These flavors combined with low bitterness make Gumballhead a refreshing American Wheat Beer that doesn’t suck.

Date stamped 03/28/14; I am ashamed to say I've had this beer once and it was about 6 years ago and wasn't crazy over it - thought it was somewhat over-rated
L - frothy off white head caps a golden colored ale, good head retention with some lacing left on the glass
S - fresh citric hop aroma, faint biscuit and wheat
T - amarillo hops shine with juicy lemon, orange, and grapefruit; wheat, lemongrass, yeast are also present
F - lighter body, refreshing, finishes dry with some lingering lemony bitterness
O - solid hoppy wheat beer. I see the catch and draw many have toward this beer. I'll buy it more often, but it's not a regular pick-up for me.

Thanks to MC for the random bottle. I've had this before, but I guess I just never took the time to review it.

Golden-yellow color with nice clarity, with a foamy white head that retained as a ringlet, leaving patchy lacing on the glass. Grassy aroma, somewhat floral, with light notes of citrus and toasted wheat. The taste is, again, grassy, leafy, herbal, floral, very light notes of citrus pith, the malt bill bringing in toasted wheat and grain husks. Herbal finish with a nicely drying bitterness. Light-medium body with a moderate carbonation. Comes across almost like an APA, which is a good thing. Drinks nicely and pairs with pretty much whatever you're doing.

Bottled on 4-1-14

A - Nice light orange body with clean white ~1.5" head

S - Fruity and hoppy. Citrus notes were more on the lemon and pomegranate side.

T - Hops and citrus up front. Sour and bitter finish.

M - Good carbonation provides a thick swallow.

O - Wheat and pale ale makes for an interesting and unique flavored beer. I would take a good pale ale or a good wheat beer over this combo, but it's still a good beer that is worth a try if you like either of those styles. Prost!
