Style | ABV
American Pale Wheat Ale |  5.60% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
An American Wheat Ale, Gumballhead is named in honor of the underground comic book cat created by Rob Syers. Initially a seasonal summer beer, now brewed year round due to demand. This beer helped redefine American Wheat Beers. Brewed with Amarillo Hops and a generous portion of American red wheat, Gumballhead has a complex hop aroma with notes of grapefruit, lemon zest, marmalade and peach. These flavors combined with low bitterness make Gumballhead a refreshing American Wheat Beer that doesn’t suck.

This brew pours without too much head and the color is a clear golden straw. Very slow carbonation.
The smell is light straw smell with a bit citrus edge. Very faint smelling, not too strong a stink.

The overall flavor isn't bursting but the flavor itself is very good. The hops in this show up much more in the flavor than the smell. The bitter herbal resinous hops rest underneath a crisp citrus edge on top. Chewed weak bubble gum shows up along with orange and lemon. Something in the flavor reminds me of fresh hop pellets before brewing and it's a nice addition. I wish I could get more Three Floyds in GA because this is a masterpiece of subtlety. Overall very drinkable and tasty.

A: Only slightly hazy orange-gold body, tufts of bubbles, a good head that leaves a thin coating on the surface, a few legs of sticky lace.

S: Mostly strikingly clean hops, most citrus fruits. Faint background of wheat. Really good, but too hop-centric for the named style.

T: Again, too hoppy for the style, but it's too good for me to knock it much. Clean, clean hops showcasing a variety of citruses with minimal bitterness playing off a slightly sweet wheat base. Finish could be longer.

M: Supremely crisp. Fluid. Lively. Refreshing. This is fantastic.

O: A simple concept wonderfully executed. Exactly matches my preferences for low bitterness, restrained hopping, and mild wheat sweetness. It's between a wheat and an IPA, I guess they can't appease both camps ('this IPA is weak!' 'this wheat has too much hops!'). All said and done, a great, easily repeatable beer.
