Style | ABV
American Pale Wheat Ale |  5.60% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
An American Wheat Ale, Gumballhead is named in honor of the underground comic book cat created by Rob Syers. Initially a seasonal summer beer, now brewed year round due to demand. This beer helped redefine American Wheat Beers. Brewed with Amarillo Hops and a generous portion of American red wheat, Gumballhead has a complex hop aroma with notes of grapefruit, lemon zest, marmalade and peach. These flavors combined with low bitterness make Gumballhead a refreshing American Wheat Beer that doesn’t suck.

Appearance: Cloudy Golden, with nice retention on an off-yellow head.

Aroma: Really Really really hoppy. Floral hops. Has some perfumy sweetness in the aroma.

Taste: A lot of hop is noted in the flavor, but the body of the wheat beer shows through. The hop flavor isn't as strong as the aroma suggests. Nice mouthfeel. Citrus flavors make this beer feel more like a hefe, but the hops keep the beer more in line with an American Pale Ale. Split personality beer.

Notes: Good beer. Not one I would suggest to a first time wheat beer drinker, simply because of the way it differs greatly from others in the category. Nice beer for the price.

Served from a 12oz bottle into a LA Teku glass. Bottles 7-18

Appearance- Clear/hazy amber/gold with quick half finger head that left lacing.

Smell- Wheat malts, lemon, apples, grass, pine, pot, green grapes. Very dank and fruity.

Taste- Much of the same earthy grassy hops with light amounts of that apple and grape flavors. Pale wheat finishes with not much lingering flavor.

Mouthfeel- Really, the perfect body. Medium carbonation with a very soft body and light bitterness. Pretty goddamn drinkable.

Overall- All the FFF hoppy beers I've had (with the exception to ZD) have powerful/beautiful noses but lack in flavor a bit. Great beer, but no Zombie dust.

A: Only slightly hazy orange-gold body, tufts of bubbles, a good head that leaves a thin coating on the surface, a few legs of sticky lace.

S: Mostly strikingly clean hops, most citrus fruits. Faint background of wheat. Really good, but too hop-centric for the named style.

T: Again, too hoppy for the style, but it's too good for me to knock it much. Clean, clean hops showcasing a variety of citruses with minimal bitterness playing off a slightly sweet wheat base. Finish could be longer.

M: Supremely crisp. Fluid. Lively. Refreshing. This is fantastic.

O: A simple concept wonderfully executed. Exactly matches my preferences for low bitterness, restrained hopping, and mild wheat sweetness. It's between a wheat and an IPA, I guess they can't appease both camps ('this IPA is weak!' 'this wheat has too much hops!'). All said and done, a great, easily repeatable beer.
