American Pale Wheat Ale |  5.60% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
An American Wheat Ale, Gumballhead is named in honor of the underground comic book cat created by Rob Syers. Initially a seasonal summer beer, now brewed year round due to demand. This beer helped redefine American Wheat Beers. Brewed with Amarillo Hops and a generous portion of American red wheat, Gumballhead has a complex hop aroma with notes of grapefruit, lemon zest, marmalade and peach. These flavors combined with low bitterness make Gumballhead a refreshing American Wheat Beer that doesn’t suck.

If there is one positive of working in Indiana, it is getting access to some good beers I don't get at home. I had wanted to try Gumballhead for a while, mainly for the name, but whatever.

Pours a somewhat sickly yellow with a decent head. Smells of lemon and lime, some wheat, and a nice little floral aroma. it smells more of flowers than bubble gum to me, but I can see the resemblance. Some mild hops as well.

Taste is good if not noteworthy. A little liight up front, until the wheat kicks in. This is followed by a pleasant hoppyness, which reminds me of the CL Xtra tripel actually, only a much more mild version. There is a nice light lime finish.

Mouthfeel is really nice. Perfect carbonation and texture. Very drinkable, but I think more than 2 might start getting boring.

Solid stuff

A: Only slightly hazy orange-gold body, tufts of bubbles, a good head that leaves a thin coating on the surface, a few legs of sticky lace.

S: Mostly strikingly clean hops, most citrus fruits. Faint background of wheat. Really good, but too hop-centric for the named style.

T: Again, too hoppy for the style, but it's too good for me to knock it much. Clean, clean hops showcasing a variety of citruses with minimal bitterness playing off a slightly sweet wheat base. Finish could be longer.

M: Supremely crisp. Fluid. Lively. Refreshing. This is fantastic.

O: A simple concept wonderfully executed. Exactly matches my preferences for low bitterness, restrained hopping, and mild wheat sweetness. It's between a wheat and an IPA, I guess they can't appease both camps ('this IPA is weak!' 'this wheat has too much hops!'). All said and done, a great, easily repeatable beer.
