American Pale Wheat Ale |  5.60% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
An American Wheat Ale, Gumballhead is named in honor of the underground comic book cat created by Rob Syers. Initially a seasonal summer beer, now brewed year round due to demand. This beer helped redefine American Wheat Beers. Brewed with Amarillo Hops and a generous portion of American red wheat, Gumballhead has a complex hop aroma with notes of grapefruit, lemon zest, marmalade and peach. These flavors combined with low bitterness make Gumballhead a refreshing American Wheat Beer that doesn’t suck.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Three Floyds branded pint glass

Pours a light straw-like gold. Pine and citrus rind on the nose. Opens with hops just like the nose citrus rind and pine but certainly not overpowering. A touch of sweet malt joins and makes its presence know, but not in a way that would weigh down this brew. Finishes light, fairly dry and crisp with a pleasant hop bite. Overall very light bodied, but the malt backbone certainly is detectable but not overly so, slick mouthfeel. This is a perfect session beer, especially in the summer.

Thanks to Dunn for bringing this one back from his travels.

A - pours a bright, translucent yellow with a thin lacing of white head

S - floral, faint wheat, a bit husky

T - husky, wheaty, floral hops, faint lemon

M - medium bodied, smooth, well carbonated

This is a solid wheat beer. It's well hopped which gives it some character that others in this style lack. It's easily drinkable, smooth, and incredibly enjoyable. I wish I could get my hands on more of this.

Much thanks to the wife, who picked this up on a recent visit to Chicago. No Zombie Dust, but this was a good consolation prize.

Absolutely topaz in color. Cloudy. Good head, very good retention.

Smell is deceptively bitter and hoppy. Not what I was expecting. Requisite wheat granary smells follow.

The hops are floral but they fade in taste, and give way to a light, wheat flavor. Sweet malts linger in the background, and take over in the aftertaste, which is great. Tasty beer to burp up. Pretty good carbonation, thin mouthfeel.

Quite happy I have 4 more of these to drink.

light in color not as cloudy as I would expect
Smells a bit hoppy
taste is smooth with some hops and not as pulpy as German wiess beers
light and zesty with the hops
Overall it tastes more to an American pale ale, very drinkable and will be great on a hot day by the pool

Bottled served in a weizen glass at the first meeting of ABS on 7/14/12

A - Golden wheat with 2 finger white head with excellent head retention and excellent bubbly lacing.

S - Floral hops, citrus, a touch of herbal notes

T - Very strong floral and citrus hop notes, grapefruit, lemon zest, honeysuckle, I feel like I'm sitting in a meadow in the summer sun. Awesome. It hits hard with hops initially and then has the most mellow of wheat back ends.

M - Light body, moderate-high carbonation. Smooth.

O - One of the best wheat beers ever, a truly interesting experience, I would drink this anytime.
