American Pale Wheat Ale |  5.60% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
An American Wheat Ale, Gumballhead is named in honor of the underground comic book cat created by Rob Syers. Initially a seasonal summer beer, now brewed year round due to demand. This beer helped redefine American Wheat Beers. Brewed with Amarillo Hops and a generous portion of American red wheat, Gumballhead has a complex hop aroma with notes of grapefruit, lemon zest, marmalade and peach. These flavors combined with low bitterness make Gumballhead a refreshing American Wheat Beer that doesn’t suck.

My first thought about the aroma was "Oh wow, thats.. interesting." It's sweet kind of like hard candy, with a few earthy, piney, and citrus notes that play nicely with each other.

Pale straw yellow with visible carbonation and a white head that disappears as quickly as it formed which leaves no speakable head.

Very interesting flavor! It begins with a nice cereal-like graininess to it, and breaks way into flowers, lemon, lime, and bread. The finish is a bit peppery, like rye was used in making this beer. Very interesting, and it hits on all points. It's has a nice body, more full than expected, with moderate, smooth carbonation. It is crisp, smooth, and satisfying.

Crisp and clean, refreshing wheat beer with lots of flavor and good hoppiness not usually found in the style. Pours nearly clear, light amber/gold, with a two finger head, solid retention, and some patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma is citrusy, mostly grapefruit and pineapple, hints of pine, light graininess and wheat character. Not a huge nose but an appealing and clean one.

The flavor does a nice job of balancing very mild malty sweetness, some wheat character, and the flavorsome citrus of the hops while keeping the bitterness mostly restrained. Again there is grapefruit and pineapple and lesser pine resin notes but they don't dominate, merely enliven and compliment the other flavors. The finish is dry and the aftertaste is fairly short and leaves more of the hop flavor lingering than any particularly assertive bitterness.

Body is medium light; carbonation is medium, feel is crisp and smooth, lively without being fizzy. An easy drinking, quenching session brew great for a hot day or paired with a pizza dinner!

Got a 12 oz. bottle in a trade from Casedogg43. Poured into a weizen glass.

A - Very light and translucent with an inch and a half white pillow on top that left a great lacing. Carbonation running constantly throughout.

S - Grape fruit esters and strong piney hops. Based on this I imagined this to be a very hoppy beer.

T - Wheat upfront with just a touch of hops. Less taste than I was expecting from the nose, but really a perfect amount. Not just a hoppy beer. Maybe a touch of lemon in the after taste.

M - Very soft. Leaves a very mild and refreshing after taste.

O - I love hop bombs, stouts and sours but I give alot of love to American Pale Wheat's. This one has been on the want's list from the beginning of my craft beer obsession and when I finally got it I was afraid it wasn't going to live up it's top ranking, but that simply wasn't the case. This beer is truly in a league all it's own. Do your self a favor, get one and enjoy it.
