American Pale Wheat Ale |  5.60% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
An American Wheat Ale, Gumballhead is named in honor of the underground comic book cat created by Rob Syers. Initially a seasonal summer beer, now brewed year round due to demand. This beer helped redefine American Wheat Beers. Brewed with Amarillo Hops and a generous portion of American red wheat, Gumballhead has a complex hop aroma with notes of grapefruit, lemon zest, marmalade and peach. These flavors combined with low bitterness make Gumballhead a refreshing American Wheat Beer that doesn’t suck.

Cheers to rmalinowski4 for sending this my way

Consumed 11/30/11

Appearance: A hazy, bright golden color with a touch of orange, foamy head that leaves nice lacing

Smell: Yes, it's a hoppy wheat beer - fresh citrus, very floral, somewhat gentle (rather than in your face) - some light fruits, like peaches and apricots - some wheat in the background, but it's very clean, more like a nice bread than a bowl of Wheaties

Taste: Fruity, wheaty goodness - a solid malt background, a very clean wheat, bready, some twang - hops are simply great - citrus and light fruits - grapefruit and fresh peach/apricot flesh without the fruity sweetness - just a hint of bitterness in the aftertaste for balance - slightly sweet, very refreshing

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body, nicely carbonated, could be a little chewier considering the wheat

Overall: About as good as this style gets

This is an all-around solid beer. It's ridiculously refreshing, clean, and inoffensive. The fruitiness is really interesting, and overall this is very drinkable. Now, if I could only get more of this...

look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

Appearance: It poured a yellow with a hint of a brown amber. This beer has a 1 and a half finger head on a medium pour with an off white maybe beige head. There is medium lacing and medium retention time.
Grade: 4.5/5

Nose: There is a nose that has a lot of citrus flavor upfront, it is glorious and the specifics seem like grapefruit, maybe some orange and a possible hint of lemon zest. There is a slight pine smell associated with the aroma on a deep pull.
Grade:4.5/5

Taste: This beer tastes how it smells almost to the letter except there is mild amount of detectable alcohol in the after taste. Not as upfront and outstanding as Alpha King.
Grade:4.0/5

Mouthfeel: This is a medium bodied brew with medium carbonation. This beer has a smooth and dryness to it.
Grade:4.5/5

Overall: This beer is very good and is one i can see myself sitting down and having a buddy to drink with. The realtively low cost of $9.99 at my local craft beer stop.
Grade: 4.5/5

Got this as part of a beer trade recently.. There seems to be a lot of hype around it and understandably so. From the time this showed up in the mail I was hyped on the label, when I opened the bottle for pouring it radiated an amazing hoppy tropical scent. Poured in a standard pint glass. Crystal clear yellow/ golden color with frothy white head. Smell.. Lots of citrus.. mango and pineapple, and a little bit of hops coming through. Taste is mild.. Light Tropical fruits as mentioned above and some citrus hops. After taste has a touch of biter hops. I could drink these all day. I hate not being able to drink this beer regularly.

thanks to mizzouguy for sending this my way in the noob bif round 6.

12oz bottle at fridge temp poured into a snifter. no freshness info.

pours out a hazy golden color, with maybe a touch of orange when the light hits it right. about 1 finger of white head that faded to some patchy retention. bits of lace off of a swirl.

maybe not as big as an aroma as i was expecting, but some nice citrus and wheat, lemony and a bit of grapefruit.

a nice balance of wheat to hops here. lots of lemony citrus as well as some pine and grapefruit that goes so nicely with a refreshing light wheatiness. just a hint of bready yeast noticable. the slightest hint of tartness in the finish that is quickly overtaken by a nice hop bitterness.

light bodied, a very nice feel on the palate. light, slightly hoppy, thirst quenching. just a bit resinous at times.

simple, yet tasty, done right, and super sessionable. maybe not as hoppy as i expected, but still hoppy enough to satisfy. i wish i could get this, cause it would be in my fridge more often than not. prolly my favorite american pale wheat to date.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tulip

Straw yellow in appearance with fluffy white head. Good head retention. Strong carbonation shooting up from the bottom of the glass.

Infusion of fruity wheat and piney hops in the aroma. Some floral hops as well. Crisp and sweet malt backbone. Hops and wheat create an excellent aroma together. Hops are a bit more prominent, but the wheat is definitely there.

Piney and floral hops hit the palate up front. Nice transition into lemon and wheat. Sweet and fruity yeast linger well after the first sip. Fantastic hop to wheat ratio.

Light mouthfeel with a more pronounced smoothness. Just the right amount of carbonation. For having a thin body, the beer maintains a silky smoothness and is easily quaffed.

An excellent wheat beer that uses loads of hops to extenuate the wheat and fruity yeast. Has a lemon zest kick that is well placed and goes great with the hop profile. This may indeed be king of the wheat beers. No wonder it's always so hard to find.
