Presentation: 750 ml brown bottle, no freshness date. On the back label are some history, how to serve and suggestions to pair with the beer.

Appearance: Sparkling golden hue, the dregs that made it into the second glass did not cloud the brew much and stayed in clumpy flakes. Tiny bubbles are champagne like and hold the white lace together.

Smell: Big spicy aroma of clove, anise and some odd herbal phenols. Touch yeasty with a sweetness that comes from both the alcohol and malt. Mild solvent aroma with fruity undertones of pineapple and pear. Needless to say the aroma is all over the place, in a good way.

Taste: A flowing medium body with a churning carbonation that rolls through the crisp mouth feel. Big bursting spicy and alcohol flavours. Spiciness is a mix of clove, anise with a backing of phenolic flavours that drawn on to an herbal front. Hints of wood crop up from the cork like flavours. More complex flavours of nutmeg, vanilla and earth bring this beer to a higher level. Hops run along the spicy herbal route. Alcohol flavours run with a touch of spicy solvent and sweet fruitiness. Trace of dry nuttiness, similar to walnut, come from the yeast. The malt character is dry on the palate and seems to let everything else do most of the leg work until the end when it throws a graininess out there when things dry up.

Notes: This is a pretty special brew, so complex and is better off pairing with a hearty meal. Grilled kielbasa with sautéed yellow squash and zucchini (butter & 3 Monts) was a perfect match.

Continued tour of French beers. Bought in Lyon, poured chilled in ale glasses, chez buzzlitebeer

A: bright; light, like a champagne/prosecco; foamy head; good lacing
S: like a dry white wine or prosecco; grape aroma
T: bright, pilsner-like quality; apple cider in the body; the yeast (champagne?) is a strong element; very much like a fruit or cider beer

Really nice, well worth a trip.

3 Monts Flanders Golden Ale

Appearance: Lovely deep gold color, little bubbles of carbonation rising to meet the fluffy head. The head is full of tight foamy bubbles, and lasted for a few moments. Lacing was nothing special, just a few patches around the glass rim.

Smell: Definitely has some sweet malt blended with fruity lemon and orange esters. Light spices, coriander and hints of clove. Very subtle and delicate aromas.

Taste&Mouthfeel: Very nice. The medium body is light but has the depth of spices. The malt seems to have hints of wheat, and is cut by the spices. There is a little heat on the back end from the alcohol, which surprised me because it's not a particularly strong in ABV beer. I wanted slightly more citrus, though the beer had sharp acidity, it still lacked the flavors of orange and lemon my nose had led me to believe would be present. Good carbonation is a major plus in this brew.

Overall: It is refreshing as a brew, esp after drinking so many IPAs lately. I passed my glass around and it was a crowd pleaser. Personally, it was a little sharp in heat and acid with not enough esters to mellow out the flavor of the malt and coriander. Still, as I said, the others in the room gave it higher marks than I.
